http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/12/fix-or-trade-in-those-old-iphones-and-ipads-they-are-worthless-rotting-in-a-drawer/
Sat, 12 Mar 2016 19:36:30 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/cracked-iphone-ipad-shattered.png?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=500" /></div>
<p>A <a href="http://9to5mac.com/fix-or-get-cash-for-your-iphone-ipad-or-mac/">few months ago we teamed up with two of the leaders in the iPhone/iPad/tech repair</a> business <a href="https://9to5mac.ifixyouri.com/387-iphone-repair">iFixyouri</a> and <a href="http://trade-in.9to5mac.com/">Myphones Unlimited</a> to help you guys fix or get big bucks for your old or broken devices. We’ve got solid feedback and have some offers to provide today. For getting cash, we can get you an <em>additional</em> $10 on cash back by using code “<b>marchmadness</b>“.<b> </b>It will add $10 across the board on all items to an already high cash back bounty<b>.</b> It obviously won’t work on non-value/recycled items however. But that’s an extra $10-er in your pocket and the code is valid through the end of March and is a great way to get some cash to buy stuff unveiled for Apple’s March event.</p>
<p>As for repairs, I’ve <a href="https://9to5mac.ifixyouri.com/387-iphone-repair">successfully used iFixyouri many times in the past</a> but I thought I’d put together a quick video or 3 on what the process is like:</p>
<p><span class='embed-youtube' style='text-align:center; display: block;'><iframe class='youtube-player' type='text/html' width='704' height='426' src='http://www.youtube.com/embed/NqJqkwjE_48?version=3&rel=1&fs=1&autohide=2&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&wmode=transparent' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen='true'></iframe></span></p>
<p>And how did they come back…? <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/12/fix-or-trade-in-those-old-iphones-and-ipads-they-are-worthless-rotting-in-a-drawer/#more-422719" class="more-link">more…</a></p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/ios-devices/'>iOS Devices</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/422719/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=422719&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=422719&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />Sat, 12 Mar 2016 19:36:30 +00009to5MacWikio for Wikipedia is a clean and minimalistic Universal Windows 10 app

Sat, 12 Mar 2016 19:04:26 +0000WinBetaBuilding a (sub-$1000) Hackintosh that meets the Oculus Rift hardware requirements – Part I
http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/12/build-oculus-rift-requirements-hackintosh-mac-os-x-el-capitan-part-i/
Sat, 12 Mar 2016 18:39:08 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/hackintosh-os-x-oculus1.jpg?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=541" /></div>
<p>Back at the beginning of March, Oculus CEO Palmer Luckey <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/03/oculus-rift-mac-support/">made controversial statements</a> about Apple’s hardware, specifically the inability of any Mac in Apple’s entire lineup of computers to handle the graphics needs of the upcoming Oculus Rift. At one point in time, Oculus had support for OS X in the pipeline; in fact previous Rift dev kits supported Macs. As time went on, however, it was decided that the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/05/15/oculus-rift-vr-mac-development-on-hold/">Oculus Rift would be Windows-only</a>, at least initially.</p>
<p>It’s with Luckey’s comments, and the lack of initial OS X support in mind, that I’ve decided to put together a Hackintosh machine that meets the minimum requirements outlined by Oculus yet can still run handedly run the Mac OS. In theory, this machine could support the Oculus Rift if the necessary software was made available for OS X. It can run the Rift now if you install a Windows partition on it… <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/12/build-oculus-rift-requirements-hackintosh-mac-os-x-el-capitan-part-i/#more-421843" class="more-link">more…</a></p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/how-to-2/'>

Telling CNBC that the last time he looked into the situation with care, the former CIA head said he felt as though the FBI was attempting to get a right to effectively decide what kind of operating system Apple would have. <p class="p1"><span class="s1">I’ve never been a Family Sharing user, Apple’s feature that allows families to share iCloud account access for things like photos and music on both iOS and Mac. But I recently decided to upgrade my Apple Music account to a family plan to take advantage of the discount as I encourage family members and friends to try out the service; that required me to activate the Family Sharing feature that Apple uses to manage family plans for Apple Music.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">While you can choose to ignore most of the features of Family Sharing — photos, calendars, and reminders can be accessed through shared folders in their respective apps — once it’s activated, there aren’t any granular settings for each member to disable sharing on a per-feature/app basis. But the even bigger issue is that all purchases from any Apple ID in the family go to a single credit card of the admin (or parent) of the group. In other words, I’m now paying for every app, song, book, or anything else that my family group members purchase from Apple on top of the subscription costs for Apple Music.</span></p>

<p>Out of seemingly nowhere, the Pangu hacking team has released an update to its jailbreak tool for devices running iOS 9.1. The tool, which is available for both Mac and Windows, allows users to jailbreak the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. More interestingly, the same team is promising to release a jailbreak for the 4th generation Apple TV next week.

http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/11/apple-march-31st-event-new-hardware/

<p>If Apple’s most recent hardware events were about going bigger (larger iPhones, a jumbo iPad, and a new Apple TV), Apple’s March 21st event is about going smaller. Apple <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/10/apple-march-event-iphone-5se-ipad-air-3-apple-watch-bands/">yesterday officially sent invites</a> to its much-anticipated event to be held at its Cupertino campus with the tagline “Let us loop you in.” The event, which was <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/02/02/march-15-event-4-inch-phone-new-ipad-apple-watch/">originally internally scheduled</a> for a week earlier, will focus on Apple’s new 4-inch <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/02/26/apple-iphone-se-4-inch-2016/">iPhone SE</a>, a smaller, <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/02/25/smaller-ipad-pro-march/">9.7-inch iPad Pro</a>, and new <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/01/22/apple-to-update-apple-watch-in-mid-march-with-new-bands-os-full-redesign-in-fall/">Apple Watch bands</a>. The company will likely also reveal the final versions of iOS 9.3, tvOS 9.2, watchOS 2.2, OS X 10.11.4, and an iTunes update. We’ve reported nearly the entirety of what’s expected to come at the event, so read on for a full roundup of everything we’re likely to see…</p>

<p>Apple’s PCIe <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/ssd/" target="_blank">SSDs</a> are already very fast, in part due to the Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) protocol used in the latest MacBooks, which dramatically reduces latency times. But future models could get even faster as <em><a href="http://www.macworld.com/article/3042988/storage/intel-is-lining-up-super-fast-optane-ssd-tech-for-macbooks.html" target="_blank">MacWorld</a></em> notes that the very latest SSD tech is compatible with NVMe.</p>

<p>ACLU principal technologist and Yale Law School visiting fellow <a href="https://twitter.com/csoghoian" target="_blank">Christopher Soghoian</a> drew attention to a rather dramatic raising of the stakes in the DOJ’s <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/10/fbi-response-apple-encryption/" target="_blank">latest filing</a> in the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/fbi/" target="_blank">San Bernardino</a> iPhone case. It contains an implicit threat that if Apple isn’t willing to create the special version of iOS needed to break the passcode protection, the government could force the company to hand over both the source code and signature so that its own coders could do it instead.</p>
<blockquote><p>For the reasons discussed above, the FBI cannot itself modify the software on Farook’s iPhone without access to the source code and Apple’s private electronic signature. The government did not seek to compel Apple to turn those over because it believed such a request would be less palatable to Apple. If Apple would prefer that
course, however, that may provide an alternative that requires less labor by Apple programmers.</p></blockquote>

<p>As <em><a href="http://gizmodo.com/a-simple-angled-plug-just-fixed-everything-wrong-with-a-1764108021" target="_blank">Gizmodo</a></em> observed, Apple puts a lot of thought into product design, but seems to forget everything it knows when it comes to power adapters (with <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/04/24/apple-watch-uk-plug-video/" target="_blank">one exception</a>). The standard Mac adapter sticks out about half a mile from the wall, which can be a pain when the socket is behind a sofa. Ten One Design has a solution in the form of Blockhead.</p>

<p><strong>Update</strong>: Apple general counsel Bruce Sewell has said that the FBI’s latest filing is a “cheap shot” and notes that the tone of it “reads like an indictment.” Sewell went on to add that the FBI is “so desperate at this point that it has thrown all decorum to the wind.” Furthermore, the Apple executive said that the brief was meant on the FBI’s part to “vilify” Apple.</p>
<p>The Department of Justice has today filed its latest response to Apple in <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/02/16/u-s-judge-orders-apple-to-help-fbi-access-data-on-san-bernardino-gunmans-iphone-5c/">their fight over unlocking the iPhone 5c used by one of the San Bernardino gunmen</a>. The filling comes a week after the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/01/apple-fbi-house-hearing-live-stream/">two sides faced off before the House Judiciary Committee</a> over the issue. In the filing, the Justice Department accuses Apple of deliberately increasing security to prevent it from being able to comply with governmental requests.</p>
