http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/25/review-usb-c-to-lightning-cable-must-have-accessory-12-9-ipad-pro/
Fri, 25 Mar 2016 16:42:13 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2016/03/usb-c-lightning-ipad-pro.jpg?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=563" /></div>
<p>The 12.9″ iPad Pro is a great productivity device, but unfortunately it ships with an inadequate 12W power adapter. This is the same charger commonly used with the smaller 9.7″ iPad line, and it’s much inadequate for a device as large and as power hungry as the 12.9″ iPad Pro.</p>
<p>I find that when using the iPad Pro at full brightness, it’s difficult to maintain your current charge, let alone gain battery life, when using the 12W charger. I’ve actually seen my iPad Pro lose battery life even when it was plugged in.</p>
<p>Needless to say, it’s pretty obvious that Apple should have included a beefier charger with the 12.9″ iPad Pro. Thankfully, <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/21/apple-launches-lightning-to-usb-c-cable-for-faster-ipad-pro-charging/">as was revealed</a> at this week’s iPhone SE event, an adequate solution is now here. If you’re an iPad Pro owner, should you invest in Apple’s new 29W capable USB-C to Lightning Cable? <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/25/review-usb-c-to-lightning-cable-must-have-accessory-12-9-ipad-pro/#more-424903" class="more-link">more…</a></p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/ios-devices/'>iOS Devices</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/reviews/'>Reviews</a> Tagged: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/29w-power-adapter/'>29w Power Adapter</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/ipad-pro/'>iPad Pro</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/lightning/'>Lightning</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/review/'>review</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/usb-c/'>USB-C</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/usb-c-power-adapter/'>USB-C Power Adapter</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/usb-c-to-lightning/'>USB-C to Lightning</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424903/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=424903&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=424903&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />Fri, 25 Mar 2016 16:42:13 +00009to5Mac9to5Toys Last Call: Samsung 50-inch 4K 3D UHDTV $849, Lara Croft Go $1, iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi + Cell (Refurb) $360, more

<p>We’d like to thank <a href="http://www.air-watch.com">AirWatch from VMWare</a> for sponsoring <em>9to5Mac</em> today. Running a nimble and efficient business means that your users are going to be mobile, sometimes not making it into the office for days or weeks at a time. Even when your users aren’t present you still need to make sure their devices are running the latest versions of the software they use, are up-to-date with any network configurations and, most of all, remain secure.</p>
<p>Managing all that when you have your hands on every device can be daunting, doing it without being able to regularly touch those devices can feel impossible. AirWatch not only makes it possible, AirWatch makes it simple… <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/25/sponsor-airwatch-from-vmware-streamline-your-business-mobility/#more-424940" class="more-link">more…</a></p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/sponsored-post/'>Sponsored Post</a> Tagged: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/sponsored-post/'>Sponsored Post</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/424940/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=424940&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=424940&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />Fri, 25 Mar 2016 13:56:33 +00009to5MacOpinion: Will limited device & app support lead 3D Touch to wither and die?
http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/25/3d-touch-future-opinion/

<p>When Apple <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/09/09/apple-iphone-6s-iphone-6s-plus/" target="_blank">launched</a> the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/iphone-6s/" target="_blank">iPhone 6s/Plus</a>, <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/3D-Touch/" target="_blank">3D Touch</a> was one of the headline features. Apple devoted a full four-minute video to showing what it does and how it works. Even today, visit the Apple website and click on the <a href="https://www.apple.com/iphone-6s/" target="_blank">iPhone 6s</a>, and it’s the first thing you see. Apple’s summary of the phone is ‘3D Touch, 12MP photos, 4K video.’</p>
<p>The first tab at the top of the screen is 3D Touch. The first video linked is the one for 3D Touch. Scroll down the page for the detail of the phone, and 3D Touch – ‘the next generation of multi-touch’ – is again the first feature to be shown. Clearly Apple thinks it’s a big deal.</p>
<p>And yet, the company just this week unveiled not just one but two new iOS devices, neither of which offers the feature. This is perhaps understandable in the case of the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/iphone-se/" target="_blank">iPhone SE</a> – Apple needed some tech distinctions between its flagship phone and its new budget model. But it’s an odd omission from a <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/ipad-pro/" target="_blank">brand new iPad</a> …</p>

<p>Apple, just hours after it confirmed issues relating to iOS 9.3 on the iPad 2, has released a new build of the operating system for the device. Carrying build number 13E236, the update appears to be rolling out to iPad 2 users now. Presumably, it’s the same build that was released to everyone earlier this week, just with the activation issues fixed.</p>

<p>Apple today has released an update to the Apple Music app for Android users. The update over month after the app’s last update that added <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/02/03/apple-music-for-android-updated-with-ability-to-save-music-to-sd-cards-for-offline-listening/">support for saving music to SD cards</a> for offline listening. Today’s update adds yet another feature that isn’t supported on iOS: the ability for users to add an Apple Music widget to their homescreen. The Beats Music app offered a widget when it was available for Android, but Apple Music has lacked it since release.</p>

<p>The ability to create Home screen folders on the Apple TV is one of the biggest new features to appear in the recent <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/21/tvos-9-2-apple-tv-update/">tvOS 9.2 update</a>. On previous versions of tvOS, apps couldn’t be organized in folders, which made for a cumbersome experience for those with lots of apps.</p>
<p>If you’re an iOS user, then using folders on the Apple TV will be a largely familiar experience. In this post, we’ll show you how to create folders, move apps in and out of folders, rename folders, and more. <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/24/how-to-create-use-app-folders-apple-tv-tvos-9-2-video/#more-422989" class="more-link">more…</a></p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/how-to-2/'>

<p>Well, I did it. After absorbing the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/21/apple-event-march-2016-live-blog-iphone-se-ipad-pro-apple-watch/" target="_blank">March event on Monday</a> and <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/23/happy-hour-059/" target="_blank">unpacking it with Benjamin</a> on the <a href="https://geo.itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/id641836403?at=10laZc&ct=925" target="_blank">9to5Mac Happy Hour podcast</a> this week, I set my alarm for 1:58 am last night and pre-ordered the iPhone SE. Based on <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/11/apple-march-31st-event-new-hardware/" target="_blank">Mark’s reporting</a>, I had an early feeling that the iPhone SE <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/01/25/opinion-apples-rumored-4-inch-iphone-5se-may-well-be-worth-seriously-considering/" target="_blank">would be compelling</a> (aside from color, the iPhone 5c never was to me) and overall <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/22/comparison-iphone-se-6-6s-plus-specs/" target="_blank">Apple delivered</a>.</p>
<p>The FaceTime selfie camera is a bit disappointing and the display contrast is weak, but the price points for 16GB and 64GB had a surprise and delight effect that I wasn’t expecting. So in one week I’ll make the giant leap back down from a 5.5-inch iPhone to a 4-inch one. Expect my thoughts on that experience in a couple of weeks. I’ll also share my iPhone SE review after some testing so send any questions or ideas over; I’m primarily interested in comparing it to the iPhone 5s and measuring the differences.</p>
<p>And now that I’ve had a few days to digest this year’s March Apple event, I have a few thoughts on everything it contained including Apple’s new Woven Nylon bands, the differences between the two iPad Pros, and a comment on tech spring cleaning …</p>

<p><a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/23/cellebrite-fbi-iphone-hack/" target="_blank">Cellebrite</a>, the mobile forensics company reportedly assisting the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/fbi/" target="_blank">FBI</a> to extract data from the iPhone in the San Bernardino case, has written a <a href="http://www.cellebrite.com/Media/Default/Files/Forensics/White-Papers/4Questions-Umbrella-Campaign_WhitePaper.pdf" target="_blank">white paper</a> noting that extracting the data is only part of the challenge. If law enforcement agencies are to be able to obtain convictions on the basis of that data, there are a lot of questions that have to be answered.</p>

<p>Just as it is for physical evidence, the admissibility of digital evidence depends on good handling procedures throughout the entire chain of custody. Each link on the chain is responsible for the proper preservation, collection, and documentation practices that demonstrate the evidence is as close as possible to its original state.</p>
<p>When evaluating whether a tool is forensically sound – whether its use can certify that evidence remains unchanged and that the resulting report is a true and accurate representation of what exists on the evidence device – here are four questions to ask:</p>
<ol>
<li>Is it a tested theory or tool?</li>
<li>Has it been independently peer reviewed?</li>
<li>Will its use support both fact and expert witness trial testimony?</li>
<li>Is it generally accepted within the forensic community?</li>

<p>At face value, it would seem that any compromised version of iOS that Apple was forced to create for the FBI would fail at least three of the four tests …</p>

<p>At a time when Apple has <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/21/apple-unveils-4-inch-iphone-se/" target="_blank">just launched</a> its <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/iphone-se/" target="_blank">cheapest ever</a> iPhone, and when Phil Schiller caused a few <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/22/phil-schiller-old-windows-pcs/" target="_blank">raised eyebrows</a> over what some interpreted as an elitist remark, Apple seems to be aiming for a more egalitarian image where the Apple Watch is concerned.</p>
<p>Apple has quietly revamped the Apple Watch section of its website, rendering the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/apple-watch-edition/" target="_blank">Edition</a> almost invisible unless you specifically go looking for it. In addition, we’re hearing reports that Apple’s most expensive Watch is also being removed from some retail store displays …</p>

<p>It’s 2016, billions of smartphones are in use across the globe, and traditional video game companies are only just coming around to the idea that there’s some money to be made from smartphone gaming. Nintendo only recently launched its <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/17/hands-on-miitomo-nintendos-first-ios-game/" target="_blank">first mobile app</a>, and plans to release a more familiar <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/02/03/nintendo-our-second-iphone-game-will-feature-a-very-familiar-character/" target="_blank">character-based game soon</a>. Sony, likewise is about to make another foray in to the world of smartphone-based gaming with its <a href="http://www.scei.co.jp/en/corporate/release/2016/160324.html" target="_blank">newly-formed corporation</a>, ForwardWorks.</p>

<p>In a surprise move, the U.S. online Apple Store now presents <a class="zem_slink" title="Microsoft Office 365" href="http://www.microsoft.com/office365/" target="_blank" rel="homepage">Microsoft Office 365</a> as a recommended iPad accessory when you buy the new 9.7-inch iPad Pro. <p>The move is surprising for two reasons …</p>

<p>The iOS <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/google-maps/">Google Maps</a> app has long shown you Uber fares and pickup times when you search for a destination, provided that you have the Uber app installed. Google has integrated five more services into its mapping app. Most of these are for countries outside the USA – though NYC dwellers can also use Gett.</p>
<blockquote>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">If you have a provider’s app installed and tap on the ride service tab, you’ll be able to see fare estimates and pick up times if a car is available near you. Select a service, and we’ll take you directly to their app for you to book your ride with one tap. When it makes sense, we’ll also show ride service availability when viewing the map in walking and transit directions, and multiple ride services options for each provider—where they exist. For example, if you’re using Uber, starting today, we’ll now show uberX, uberXL and UberBLACK for an easy and quick comparison.</span></p>
