Thu, 21 Apr 2016 19:35:34 +0000WinBetaOpinion: How iPhone SE is tempting me to actually skip iPhone 7
http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/21/opinion-iphone-se-iphone-7-upgrade-path/
Thu, 21 Apr 2016 19:18:42 +0000

From iPhone 4 and beyond, I’ve never skipped out on buying a flagship iPhone. The white AT&T iPhone 4 in May 2011 was my first model, then iPhone 4s in November a month after its launch. Starting with iPhone 5, I’ve bought every flagship iPhone on day one (even camping out in line overnight at least twice). I pre-ordered the off-cycle release iPhone SE last month and switched from the top-of-the-line iPhone 6s Plus. I fully reserve the right to change my mind between now and September, but my experience with the iPhone SE so far and the current crop of iPhone 7 rumors has me thinking I just might hop off the upgrade train for the first time. Here’s why:

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 18:43:09 +0000WinBetaApple releases iOS 9.3.2 + OS X 10.11.5 public beta 2
http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/21/ios-9-3-2-os-x-10-11-5-public-beta-2/

Apple has just released the latest public builds of its iOS 9.3.2 and OS X 10.11.5 updates out to beta testers. Both platforms saw developer builds released yesterday, with small bug fixes noted in the release notes. Most interesting to note is that Apple once again has allowed a combination of Low Power Mode and Night Shift to be enabled simultaneously on iOS devices.

Although Apple usually updates its iOS adoption statistics on a fortnightly basis, the company had strangely stopped updating its iOS chart last month. As iOS 9 growth appeared to have stalled, perhaps the numbers simply didn’t change significantly in that time. However, this week Apple has updated the chart with a significant jump, now reporting iOS 9 was seen on 84% of active devices as of April 18th. With iOS 10 set to be announced in June (and internal testing gradually ramping — see below), it appears iOS 9 will end up peaking around the 90% adoption mark in line with previous versions.

The Information is reporting that Apple’s efforts to build out its own cloud infrastructure are being held back by company politics. Apple wants to overhaul its cloud services backends to rely on new technologies built in-house but is facing several roadblocks, attributable in part to power struggle between the Siri group and another group handling other Apple services like iMessage and iTunes.

According to The Information, one engineering manager has already resigned with more likely to follow.

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 15:55:09 +0000WinBetaQR code-based Walmart Pay rolling out to iPhone as retailer still resists Apple Pay
http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/21/walmart-pay-launch-apple-pay/
Thu, 21 Apr 2016 15:09:57 +0000

QR code-based payments have their benefits like tying debit and credit card transactions to store reward cards and saving receipts in one step, but they still don’t beat the convenience of NFC-based methods like Apple Pay which are less finicky and more secure. Major retailer Walmart, however, is pushing forward with its plans to make checking out smarter using its own QR code-based system called Walmart Pay. And although the two systems could both be options, Walmart continues to resist other digital wallets including Apple Pay.

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 14:42:24 +0000WinBetaReview: Burkley leather accessories for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch
http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/21/review-burkley-leather/

I’m a fairly tough sell when it comes to iPhone and iPad cases. I’ve mostly not used a case on my iPhone, and my iPad lives uncased at home and attached to my Brydge keyboard when on the move. But I had to admit that the cases NY-based Burkley had on offer appeared to live up to their claimed ‘premium leather’ label, so I decided to check them out.

The Antique Camel Leather looked particularly attractive, so I tested cases for the iPhone 5/5S/SE and iPad Air 2/9.7-inch Pro. For the Watch, the only matching bands were Hermès-style ones – which is not my thing at all – so I tried the Sacco Tan one instead …

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 13:15:29 +0000WinBetaDeveloper version of Opera for Mac now has a free, integrated VPN for privacy and region-hopping [Video]
http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/21/free-vpn-for-mac-opera-developer/
Thu, 21 Apr 2016 12:59:31 +0000

Virtual Private Networks are becoming increasingly handy things to have, offering greater security on public Wi-Fi networks, making it harder for websites to track you and accessing content only available in particular countries. Usually you have to pay for these, but the latest developer version of the Opera for Mac has one built right into the browser, and it’s completely free to use.

Until now, most VPN services and proxy servers have been limited and based on a paid subscription. With a free, unlimited, native VPN that just works out-of-the-box and doesn’t require any subscription, Opera wants to make VPNs available to everyone.

If accessing content from other regions is your primary interest, the browser currently allows you to virtually travel to the USA, Canada and Germany, but more regions will follow once the feature makes it into the stable version.

Opera’s developer browser is a free download. Once installed, follow the instructions below to activate the feature.

Mac users just need to click the Opera menu, select “Preferences” and toggle the feature VPN on. A button will appear in the browser address field, from which the user can see and change location (more locations will appear later), check whether their IP is exposed and review statistics for their data used.

So when I spotted the Qwerkywriter on Kickstarter ages ago, I always meant to check it out. A recent post on 9to5Toys reminded me about it. From photos, I loved the look. My questions were whether it would look as good in real-life as it does in the photos, whether it would turn out to be a novelty or a serious keyboard – and whether it could possibly justify that $349 price-tag?

So yesterday I tried it out with my iPad, and today I’ve been using it with my Mac – including writing this review on it – in order to find out …

If you’re an Apple Music subscriber, Apple makes it easy to create an embeddable playlist preview widget via its Apple Music website. All it takes is the share URL from the playlist of your choice, and the widget generator does the rest of the heavy lifting.

The widget is limited to 30-second previews of all of the songs included in the selected playlist. At the bottom of the widget, you’ll find a link to Apple Music, where playlist listeners who aren’t yet subscribers can sign up for a free 3-month trial subscription. more…

Filed under:
