Tue, 03 May 2016 05:01:36 +0000WinBetaOpinion: Smart Connector is the future but Apple & accessory makers need to work together
http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/02/opinion-smart-connector-pros-and-cons/
Tue, 03 May 2016 00:51:01 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/screen-shot-2016-05-02-at-4-17-17-pm.png?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=502" /></div>
<p>Alongside the iPad Pro last November, Apple introduced a new connectivity option for users with the Smart Connector. Originally, Apple only touted the connection as being good for easily pairing things like keyboards to the iPad. We’ve since learned a little more about the capabilities of the three-pin connection, but overarching details are still vague.</p>
<p>Last month, I had the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/25/review-logitechs-smart-connector-equipped-charging-dock-for-ipad-pro/" target="_blank">chance to try out the LOGI Base dock with Smart Connector support</a>. Prior to using it, I was totally unaware that the Smart Connector was capable of charging the iPad Pro, albeit it at a slightly slower pace. Using the LOGI Base, however, intrigued me. What are the actual capabilities of Smart Connector?</p>

<p>[UPDATE: Video below.]</p>
<p>As expected, Apple CEO Tim Cook this evening appeared on CNBC’s Mad Money with Jim Cramer to discuss the recent news surrounding the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/26/fy16-q2-earnings-call/">company’s second quarter earnings results</a>. The company reported $50.6 billion in revenue and $10 billion in profits, but <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/27/following-earnings-decline-aapl-opens-down-8-market-cap-shrinks-by-40-billion/">its stock was sent into spiral</a>. Speaking to Cramer, however, Cook defended Apple’s future and called Wall Street’s response a “huge overreaction.”</p>

Mon, 02 May 2016 22:09:52 +0000WinBetaOpinion: MacBook Pro owners, it’s time to consider a 4K display
http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/02/opinion-4k-monitor-good-investment-macbook-pro/

<p>If you own a MacBook Pro with Retina Display and desire extra screen real estate, then a 4K monitor can be a good investment, especially as the price of such monitors continue to dwindle.</p>
<p>Why should you consider a 4K display instead of a cheaper monitor with lesser resolution? <p>Marco Arment is well known for working at Tumblr, creating Instapaper and Overcast, and for being a fairly prolific podcaster. Needless to say, he’s dabbled his toes in lot of different areas. One area that has remained virtually untouched by Arment is, oddly enough, the Mac.</p>
<p>As someone whose name is so synonymous with iOS development, it’s surprising that Quitter, a brand new app based around auto-quitting distracting apps after a set period of inactivity, is Arment’s first app release for the Mac. <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/02/quitter-mac-app-marco-arment/#more-429653" class="more-link">more…</a></p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/apps/'>Apps</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/mac/'>Mac</a> Tagged: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/mac-app/'>Mac App</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/marco-arment/'>Marco Arment</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/quitter/'>Quitter</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429653/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=429653&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=429653&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />Mon, 02 May 2016 20:23:18 +00009to5MacGet your Oculus Rift at Best Buy starting on May 7

<p>A Weibo report has surfaced that indicates the iPhone 7 may have a slightly larger battery than the current generation iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. <a href="http://www.weibo.com/5899861880/DtpIbcrbB?from=page_1005055899861880_profile&wvr=6&mod=weibotime&type=comment#_rnd1462196521195">According to the poster</a>, the iPhone 7 will include a battery with a 1735 mAH capacity and iPhone 7 Plus will feature a 2810 mAH battery. On both models, this is (slightly) more than the current-generation iPhones. The <a href="http://amzn.to/1Y33Ncg">iPhone 6s</a> and <a href="http://amzn.to/1rd9uJK">iPhone 6s Plus</a> have batteries with 1715 mAH and 2750 mAH respectively.</p>
<p>The iPhone 7 is rumored to look very similar to the current iPhone, with a <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/13/purported-iphone-7-chassis-pictures-show-redesigned-antenna-lines-new-larger-camera/">thinner body and redesigned antennas</a>. A <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/17/kgi-apple-to-drop-aluminum-iphone-casing-in-2017-in-favor-of-new-all-glass-enclosure-with-amoled-screen/">major chassis design change</a> is currently expected for the ‘iPhone 8’ in 2017.</p>

<p>If there was one thing I would have sworn you could never interest me in trying, it was yet another Bluetooth earpiece. There are about a zillion of these available (well, 45,322 <a href="http://amzn.to/23iQllY" target="_blank">according to Amazon</a>), and for the most part my view has always been that if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ’em all. Stick them in your ear and get tinny, one-eared sound that is hopeless for music but does the job for hands-free phone calls when you don’t have access to an installed setup in your car.</p>
<p>But I had to admit that the Schatzii Bullet is rather smaller and more stylish than most, with a cute charging system that goes some way toward making up for the somewhat limited battery-life that inevitably accompanies such a small device. It seemed worth a try …</p>

Mon, 02 May 2016 12:54:41 +0000WinBetaComment: Atari co-founder’s ‘easy to learn, difficult to master’ approach may just be the missing link in mobile gaming
http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/02/atari-co-founder-mobile-gaming-approach/
Mon, 02 May 2016 12:27:21 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/breakout.jpg?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=500" /></div>
<p>I’m not much of a gamer, but I think Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell may have put his finger on what is often missing from mobile games – a lesson he last week told the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/apr/28/atari-co-founder-nolan-bushnell-mobile-games-make-me-want-to-throw-my-phone" target="_blank"><em>Guardian</em></a> many have yet to learn from the early arcade games.</p>
<blockquote>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">“When you look at mobile and arcade gaming, they’re identical,” Bushnell says. “Mobile has some of the same game constraints for the player, and that ‘easy to learn, and difficult to master’ metric.” This common phrase is, as it happens, known as ‘Bushnell’s law’ – he first uttered it in 1971 while making his preliminary steps into the arcade business with seminal coin-op Computer Space.com</span></p>

<p>That lesson – dating back to the days when Apple co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak created Breakout for Atari – was something arcade games designers had to learn if they wanted to get people first to try a game and then to keep feeding in the coins …</p>

<p>For the first time in a federal case, a suspect has been ordered to use her fingerprint to unlock her iPhone using Touch ID. The <a href="http://www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-iphones-fingerprints-20160430-story.html" target="_blank"><em>LA Times</em></a> reports that a federal judge signed a warrant allowing the FBI to compel a suspect in an identity theft case to to unlock the phone just 45 minutes after her arrest.</p>
<blockquote><p>Authorities obtained a search warrant compelling the girlfriend of an alleged Armenian gang member to press her finger against an iPhone that had been seized from a Glendale home […]</p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">In the Glendale case, the FBI wanted the fingerprint of Paytsar Bkhchadzhyan, a 29-year-old woman from L.A. with a string of criminal convictions who pleaded no contest to a felony count of identity theft.</span></p>
</blockquote>
<p>The warrant is consistent with <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2014/10/31/touch-id-police/" target="_blank">a 2014 case</a> where a Virginia District Court ruled that while passcodes are protected by the 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination, fingerprints are not. Legal experts, however, have differing views …</p>

<p>An iPhone 6 is at the center of an investigation of two missing Florida teens. Last July, 14-year-olds Austin Stephanos and Perry Cohen set out on a boat trip in the Atlantic Ocean, but both of the bodies went missing and boys never returned. The United States Coast Guard performed an eight-day search for the boys, but never found them. Last, month, however, their boat was recovered 100 miles off the shore of Bermuda and on the boat was Stephanos’ iPhone (via <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/US/apple-analyze-iphone-teen-missing-sea/story?id=38763840">ABC News</a>).</p>

<p>Recently I noticed that my Late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina Display seemed to be dying at a faster clip. Naturally, I assumed that the battery might be going bad.</p>
<p>After checking the battery cycle count, I learned that I was probably wrong about the battery being bad, as the cycle count was still well within the normal life span of my MacBook. Here’s how I was able to verify that everything was okay with my MacBook’s battery.</p>

<p>Developer Nick Lee has <a href="https://medium.com/tendigi-insights/i-installed-windows-95-on-my-apple-watch-589fda5e36d#.sqq80n1op">managed to hack a working version of Windows 95</a> onto his Apple Watch. The utility of this is close to zero — but it is hilarious to watch. It highlights how smart wristwatches like Apple Watch are now as powerful as (if not more than) desktop computers from the turn of the century. <p>The automotive industry is a capital-intensive industry. Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne knows it and that’s why he is open to work with Google or Apple:</p>
<blockquote><p>“Google can buy every automaker out of petty cash. And Apple — they made a net profit of $24 billion in one quarter. This is nonsense. What are we defending? What?”</p></blockquote>
<p>In a not yet released 2-hour interview with <a href="http://www.automobilemag.com/news/fca-ceo-tieup-google-apple-makes-sense/">Automobile Mag</a>‘s Georg Kache, Marchionne discusses <a href="http://electrek.co/2016/04/28/google-reportedly-close-to-striking-a-self-driving-car-partnership-with-fiat-chrysler/">the recent rumors of a FCA partnership with Google for self-driving cars</a> and how the automaker wants to position itself in an industry disrupted by the likes of Apple, Google, Tesla and Uber. <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/29/fiat-chrysler-ceo-apple-google-partnership-build-cars/#more-429439" class="more-link">more…</a></p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/apple-car/'>Apple Car</a> Tagged: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/apple/'>Apple</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/fiat-chrysler/'>Fiat Chrysler</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/google/'>Google</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/partnership/'>partnership</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/sergio-marchionne/'>Sergio Marchionne</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/429439/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=429439&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=429439&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />Fri, 29 Apr 2016 19:10:51 +00009to5MacDesigner Apple Watch bands by Coach reportedly coming soon for around $150 [Photos]

<p>Apple has previously partnered with designer brand Hermes for a set of premium Apple Watch bands, <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/07/apple-announces-standalone-apple-watch-hermes-bands-coming-soon-with-new-colors/">sold separately from $340 per strap</a>. It now appears that a second high-profile fashion designer, Coach, is coming on board with its own range of Apple Watch bands.</p>
<p>David Boglin De Bautista <a href="http://hauteecriture.com/coach-to-release-new-apple-watch-bands-as-early-as-june/">reports a sales associate</a> in a Coach boutique told him about the upcoming collection, set to debut as early as June.
