And reception seems to be pretty good.</p>

Fri, 02 Feb 2018 20:18:17 +00009to5MacWe've got your playbook for football Sundayhttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/SZSGT_s9ENM/<html><head></head><body><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>Just in time for the coin toss, we’re here with some ways your Google Assistant can help you prep for game day, as well as some trending recipes state by state.</p><h2>“Hey Google, let’s make buffalo wings”</h2><p>The <a href="https://assistant.google.com">Google Assistant</a>'s <a href="https://www.blog.google/products/assistant/cooking-with-the-assistant-google-home-your-secret-ingredient/">recipe feature</a>, available on speakers like Google Home, is a host’s best friend: you can send a recipe straight from mobile search or the Assistant on your phone (iPhone and Android) to your speaker. From there, just say “Hey Google, start recipe,” and you can follow hands-free step-by-step directions as you go. You can also ask questions like “what’s a substitute for chipotle chili powder?” or “how many grams of cornmeal in a cup?” and then go right back to the recipe by saying “Hey Google, next step.” Set multiple timers at once and even name them (cornbread, simmer); listen to music and podcasts to get your game face on.</p><p>You can also try one of these questions with your Google Assistant to get game day details, highlights and a few surprises:</p><ul><li>“Hey Google, are you watching the big game?” </li><li>“Hey Google, who is going to win?”</li><li>“Hey Google, touchdown!” </li></ul><p>And since the Google Assistant is available across devices, you can keep up with the game no matter where you are. If you’re running late to the party, ask the Google Assistant in your Android Auto car for the score. Walking to the corner store to stock up on snacks? Your Assistant on your phone or headphones will have the latest. And if you’re at home looking to fill the time between plays, ask the Assistant on your speaker to play sports trivia.</p><h2>Now we’re cooking</h2>Whether you’re a Philly fan, a New England diehard or just there for the commercials, good food is non-negotiable. With data from the Google News Lab, here’s a look at the most uniquely-searched game day recipes by state. Turns out the two rival teams’ home states are both chowing down on chili, but from “bacon shrimp” in Montana to “calzone” in Kansas to “crab dip” in South Carolina, maybe these unique searches will inspire you to go beyond chips and dip! Museums have taken on this question for centuries, using artifacts to offer windows into other people’s experience of the world. But there’s always been a limit to what galleries can display—because of the sheer volume of objects, and because some of those items are too fragile to sit in the open or be handled by streams of patrons.<br/></p><p>When the National Museum of African-American History and Culture (NMAAHC) opened in 2016, their mission was to redefine how people experience art and artifacts in the modern age. And starting today, visitors to the museum can interact with rare items from Black history in a new 3D installation.<br/></p></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>The items in this installation have historical and personal significance. For example, I’ve always loved 70s fashion and style. Seeing scans of actual boots from “The Wiz” takes me back to my childhood delight in seeing the movie and play. I’m also a jazz musician, like my father before me, and seeing a cast of composer and pianist Eubie Blake’s hand reminds me why I still can’t (and probably will never) do his solos justice. My hope is visitors will experience these artifacts and establish deeper connections with their personal stories as well.<br/></p><p>Following a $1 million Google.org grant to the museum in 2016, I worked with a mulitracial volunteer team of engineers from the Black Googler Network and other internal organizations to build the exhibit. And with Google Home, <a href="https://store.google.com/product/google_home_max">Google Home Max</a> or your other smart speakers, the Assistant can help do everyday things like call your mom, turn on compatible living room lights, plan your day and even show you your photos from the holidays. Now, it’s getting even better, by helping you wake up, find a show and listen to your favorite songs (for some content, you might need a subscription). </p><p><b>Waking up is hard to do...</b></p><p>And waking up to a wailing alarm doesn’t always help to start your day off on the right foot. Luckily, the Google Assistant can help you wake up more peacefully.</p><p>All you have to do is say “Hey Google, set an alarm for 6 AM that plays [insert favorite musician💃]” to the Assistant on Google Home (or your other Assistant-enabled speakers) and you can set an alarm and wake up to your favorite song, playlist or radio station.</p><p>.<b>..Finding your shows and music shouldn’t be</b></p><p>The Assistant can already help you learn about actors or play a TV show, and now it can help you keep up with the TV shows you’re into right now. Just say “Hey Google, what channel airs The Flash” or “Hey Google, when does The Flash air next.” And don’t forget, you can set a reminder so you never miss the show, ‘Hey Google, remind me to watch Riverdale every Wednesday at 8 PM.” And when it's time to tune in, it's easy with voice casting and YouTube TV. Just say "Hey Google, watch Riverdale"</p><p>We've worked closely with Netflix to make your Netflix casting experience more personal. The first step is to link your Netflix account in the Google Home app or via the Google Assistant on your phone. From there, just choose your Netflix profile and get right to the things you want to watch. Thanks to Voice Match on the Assistant, you can just say, “Hey Google, play Stranger Things on Netflix" and it will pick up right where you left off. And same for your roommate or partner.</p><p>Finally, if you're a Google Play Music user, you can now enjoy all the music that you’ve purchased or uploaded to your music library. It’s as simple as asking for your favorite artist, song or album and singing along to the beat. So grab your Google Home Max from the Google Store, Verizon or Best Buy and you can sing and dance your heart out in no time. </p></div></div></body></html><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~4/9mGJgL_BCEY" height="1" width="1" alt=""/>Thu, 01 Feb 2018 16:00:00 -0000Thu, 01 Feb 2018 16:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogStatcounter: Windows 10 overtakes Windows 7 as the most popular Windows version for Internet usage

We opened our first European data center in Belgium back in 2009, and now we’re announcing plans to build a third building on the same site. We’re also announcing a new solar plant—the first solar facility we’ve built on a data center facility site.</p><br/><p>We will invest approximately EUR 250 million to build the additional data center building in Saint-Ghislain, bringing our total investment in Belgium to EUR 1 billion. It’s due to be completed and operational by mid-2019.</p><br/><p>The new solar plant, which is already up and running, represents a previous investment of EUR 3 million. And we’ve learned that it is the second-largest solar plant in the region!</p><br/><h2>Reaching 100 percent renewable energy for global operations</h2><p>The photovoltaic installations will feature 10,665 solar panels and will generate 2.9 Gigawatt hour of clean, reliable, renewable energy every year. Construction began in March 2017, using a local company to install the solar farm on four hectares of land in our data center. Ultimately, the solar project will contribute to a greener footprint on our data center campus, already one of the most energy-efficient sites globally.</p><br/><p>It’s not the first time we’ve acted on our sustainability goals in Belgium. Saint-Ghislain was the very first Google data center to run entirely without refrigeration, using instead an advanced cooling system that draws grey water from the nearby industrial canal.</p><br/><p>It also fits in with our wider goal of ensuring a positive impact on the environment. We are calculating our final energy bills and expect that we reached our <a href="https://environment.google/projects/announcement-100/">target of 100 percent renewable energy for our global operations</a> in 2017, including data centers and offices. This means we’re directly buying enough wind and solar electricity to account for every unit of electricity we use—and it makes Google the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy worldwide.</p><br/><h2>Enhancing connectivity and creating jobs in Europe</h2><p>Demand for Google services grows every day, and the steady expansion of our network across Europe reflects this. Along with Saint-Ghislain, we have data centers at Eemshaven in The <a href="https://www.google.nl/about/datacenters/inside/locations/eemshaven/">Netherlands</a>, Dublin, <a href="http://https//www.google.com/about/datacenters/inside/locations/dublin/">Ireland</a>, and Hamina in <a href="https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/inside/locations/hamina/">Finland</a>. Each investment enhances connectivity.</p><br/><p>Data centers also benefit communities through job creation. The whole Saint-Ghislain site currently employs around 350 people in full-time and contractor roles—from computer technicians to electrical and mechanical engineers, to security, catering and facilities management. With this investment of EUR 250 million, we’ll create more construction jobs, and more full-time roles in Google once the third building is complete and operational.</p><br/><h2>Belgium: a digital frontrunner in Europe</h2><p>Charles Michel, Prime Minister of Belgium, joined us for an event this week announcing these projects, where he celebrated Belgium’s <a href="https://www.tijd.be/politiek-economie/belgie-federaal/Michel-plant-voorjaarsoffensief/9970262">investment</a> and ambitions as a digital pioneer. "The digital world is constantly changing, and Belgium is becoming more and more attractive for big investors like Google. This new investment is excellent news for the Walloon region and Belgium in terms of job creation."</p><br/><p>We’re grateful to the local and national government, local suppliers and community for their continued support of our data center presence in Belgium. We hope it contributes to make Belgium a digital frontrunner in Europe, creating jobs, skills development and economic opportunities.</p></div></div></body></html><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~4/pdt_YZbuhMU" height="1" width="1" alt=""/>Thu, 01 Feb 2018 09:30:00 -0000Thu, 01 Feb 2018 09:30:00 -0000The Official Google BlogThe She Word: Frances Kwee turns up the volume on Google hardwarehttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/NvpLqHc-HV4/<html><head></head><body><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p><i>Editor’s Note: The She Word is a Keyword series all about dynamic and creative women at Google. They’re going into all types of living spaces, where the sounds will reverberate differently. So we created Smart Sound, which uses machine learning to adjust to whatever space the speaker is in. Since all homes are different, we trained our machine learning model to recognize thousands of different room configurations. This helps Google Home Max to adapt to the setup of your room: if you move it from your bookshelf against the wall to an end table across the room, it can evaluate its new surroundings and will automatically adjust.</p></div></div></div></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--medium h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--4 h-c-grid__col--offset-4 "><img alt="xx" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/Screen_Shot_2018-01-29_at_10.33.27_PM_oI87.max-1000x1000.png"/><figcaption class="article-image__caption "><div class="rich-text">Here’s Frances in the sound studio (official term is “anechoic chamber”) with Mike Asfaw, an audio hardware engineer.</div></figcaption></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><h2>Break this down for the non-experts: how do you ensure high-quality sound in the speakers?<br/></h2><p>With Max, one of our goals was to increase volume but limit distortion. Think about when you play music on your phone’s tiny speaker at top volume. It sounds raspy and muffled—not what you expect from a premium smart speaker.</p><br/><p>So we used a computer program to simulate the speaker performance in dozens of scenarios, which helped us predict what the speaker would sound like before we built it. We also used a 3D printer to make prototypes to test out different buckets and grills. We ended up creating nearly 100 different 3D printed versions of Google Home Max before we landed on the final design!</p></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><h2>How do you make products broadly appealing?</h2><p>As a mom, I ask myself, “How can more families benefit from our products?” I step back to think about the different ways a family would use a smart speaker.</p><p>We’re also trying to bring these products into homes of people who might be intimidated by technology, but we’re showing them that it’s easy to use. We call this a “featured snippet.” In this post—the first in a new series going behind-the-scenes on how Google Search works—we’ll explore when, where and why we provide featured snippets.</p><p></p><h2>What is a featured snippet?</h2>Let’s start with a look at a <a href="https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6229325?hl=en">featured snippet</a>, in this case, one that appears for a search on “<a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=why+is+the+sky+blue">Why is the sky blue?</a>”<br/><p></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="FeaturedSnippet_1.png" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/FeaturedSnippet_1.max-1000x1000.png"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>We call these featured snippets because unlike our regular web listings, the page’s description—what we call a “<a href="https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35624?hl=en">snippet</a>”—comes first. With featured snippets, we reverse the usual format. We’re featuring the snippet, hence the “featured snippet” name. We also generate featured snippets in a different way from our regular snippets, so that they’re easier to read.</p><p>We display featured snippets in search when we believe this format will help people more easily discover what they’re seeking, both from the description and when they click on the link to read the page itself. It’s especially helpful for those on mobile or searching by voice.<br/></p><p>Here are a few examples where featured snippets enhance the search experience by making it easier to access information from good sources, big and small:<br/></p></div></div><div class="block-image_carousel"><div class="h-c-page article-module"><div class="article-module glue-pagination h-c-carousel h-c-carousel--simple h-c-carousel--dark ng-cloak" data-glue-pagination-config="{cyclical: true}"><div class="h-c-carousel__wrap"><ul class="glue-carousel ng-cloak" data-glue-carousel-options="{pointerTypes: ['touch', 'mouse'], jump: true}"><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/Search_FeaturedSnippet.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">FeaturedSnippet1.png</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text"><a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=can+a+bad+spark+plug+damage+my+engine">“can a bad spark plug damage my engine”</a></div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/FeaturedSnippet2.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">FeaturedSnippet2.png</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text"><a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=when+did+jimi+hendrix+burn+his+guitar">"when did jimi hendrix burn his guitar"</a></div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/Screen_Shot_2018-01-29_at_5.51.39_PM.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">featured snippets how did mesopotamians write</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text"><a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=how+did+mesopotamians+write">"how did mesopotamians write"</a></div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/FeaturedSnippet5.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">FeaturedSnippet5.png</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text"><a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=cats+that+look+like+wild+cats">"Cats that look like wildcats"</a></div></figcaption></figure></li></ul><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate glue-pagination-previous" data-glue-pagination-label="Previous" data-glue-pagination-update-model="false"><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate-wrap"><svg class="h-c-icon h-c-icon--keyboard-arrow-left" role="img"><use xlink:href="#mi-keyboard-arrow-right"></use></svg></div></div><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate glue-pagination-next" data-glue-pagination-label="Next" data-glue-pagination-update-model="false"><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate-wrap"><svg class="h-c-icon h-c-icon--keyboard-arrow-right" role="img"><use xlink:href="#mi-keyboard-arrow-right"></use></svg></div></div></div><div class="h-c-carousel__navigation"><div class="glue-pagination-page-list"></div></div></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>Featured snippets aren’t just for written content. And with the growth in voice-activated digital assistants, more people are doing voice queries. In these cases, the traditional "10 blue links" format doesn't work as well, making featured snippets an especially useful format.<br/><p></p><p>Of course, we continue to show regular listings in response to searches along with featured snippets. That’s because featured snippets aren’t meant as a sole source of information. They’re part of an overall set of results we provide, giving people information from a wide range of sources.<br/></p><p></p><h2>People click on featured snippets to learn more</h2>When we introduced featured snippets in January 2014, there were some concerns that they might cause publishers to lose traffic. What if someone learns all they need to know from the snippet and doesn’t visit the source site?<br/><p></p><p>It quickly became clear that featured snippets do indeed drive traffic. That’s why publishers <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+be+a+featured+snippet">share tips</a> on how to increase the chances of becoming one, because they recognize being featured in this way is a traffic driver.<br/></p><p>When it comes to spoken featured snippets, we cite the source page in the spoken result and provide a link to the page within the Google Home app, so people can click and learn more:<br/></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="FeaturedSnippet_3.png" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/FeaturedSnippet_3.max-1000x1000.png"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>We recognize that featured snippets have to work in a way that helps support the sources that ultimately makes them possible. That’s why we always take publishers into account when we make updates to this feature.</p><p></p><h2>Working to improve featured snippets</h2>The vast majority of featured snippets work well, as we can tell from usage stats and from what our <a href="https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2015/11/updating-our-search-quality-rating.html">search quality raters</a> report to us, people paid to evaluate the quality of our results. A third-party <a href="https://www.stonetemple.com/digital-personal-assistants-test">test</a> last year by Stone Temple found a 97.4 percent accuracy rate for featured snippets and related formats like <a href="https://www.google.com/intl/en_us/insidesearch/features/search/knowledge.html">Knowledge Graph</a> information.<br/><p></p><p>Because featured snippets are so useful, especially with mobile and voice-only searches, we’re working hard to smooth out bumps with them as they continue to grow and evolve.<br/></p><p>Last year, we took deserved criticism for featured snippets that said things like “women are evil” or that former U.S. President Barack Obama was planning a coup. We failed in these cases because we didn’t weigh the authoritativeness of results strongly enough for such rare and fringe queries.<br/></p><p>To improve, we <a href="https://blog.google/products/search/our-latest-quality-improvements-search/">launched</a> an effort that included updates to our <a href="https://static.googleusercontent.com/media/www.google.com/en//insidesearch/howsearchworks/assets/searchqualityevaluatorguidelines.pdf">Search Quality Rater Guidelines</a> to provide more detailed examples of low-quality webpages for raters to appropriately flag, which can include misleading information, unexpected offensive results, hoaxes and unsupported conspiracy theories. This work has helped our systems better identify when results are prone to low-quality content. If detected, we may opt not to show a featured snippet.<br/></p><p>Even when a featured snippet has good content, we occasionally appear to goof because it might not seem the best response to a query. On the face of it, it might not appear to respond to a query at all.<br/></p><p>For example, a search for “<a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=how+did+the+romans+tell+time+at+night">How did the Romans tell time at night</a>” until recently suggested sundials, which would be useless in the dark:<br/></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="FeaturedSnippet_4.png" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/FeaturedSnippet_4.max-1000x1000.png"/><figcaption class="article-image__caption "><div class="rich-text"><b>Left:</b> Until recently, a search for “How did the Romans tell time at night” resulted in a featured snippet suggesting sundials. <b>Right:</b>We now provide a better response: water clocks.</div></figcaption></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>While the example above might give you a chuckle, we take issues like this seriously, as we do with any problems reported to us or that we spot internally. We study them and use those learnings to make improvements for featured snippets overall. In this case, it led to us providing a better response: water clocks.</p><p></p><h2>When near-matches can be helpful</h2>Another improvement we’re considering is to better communicate when we give you a featured snippet that’s not exactly what you searched for but close enough that it helps you get to the information you seek.<br/><p></p><p>For example, the original “sundial” featured snippet above was actually a response for “How did Romans tell time.” We displayed this near-match then because we didn’t have enough confidence to show a featured snippet specifically about how Romans told time at night. We knew sundials were used by Romans to tell time generally, because so many pages discussed this. How they told time at night was less discussed, so we had less data to make a firm connection.<br/></p><p>Showing a near-match may seem odd at first glance, but we know in such cases that people often explore the source of a featured snippet and discover what they’re looking for. In this case, the page that the featured snippet originally came from did explain that Romans used water clocks to tell time at night. We just didn't then have enough confidence then to display that information as a featured snippet.<br/></p><p>We’re considering increasing the use of a format we currently employ only in some limited situations, to make it clearer when we serve a near-match. For example, we might display "How did Romans tell time?" above the featured snippet, as illustrated in the mockup below:<br/></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--medium h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--4 h-c-grid__col--offset-4 "><img alt="FeaturedSnippet_5.png" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/FeaturedSnippet_5.max-1000x1000.png"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>Our testing and experiments will guide what we ultimately do here. We might not expand use of the format, if our testing finds people often inherently understand a near-match is being presented without the need for an explicit label.</p><p></p><h2>Improving results by showing more than one featured snippet</h2>Sometimes, a single featured snippet isn’t right for every question. For example, “<a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+setup+call+forwarding">how to setup call forwarding</a>” varies by carrier. That’s where a recent feature we launched lets you interactively select a featured snippet specific to your situation. In the example below, you can see how it allows people to quickly locate solutions from various providers:<br/><p></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="FeaturedSnippet_6.png" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/FeaturedSnippet_6.max-1000x1000.png"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>Another format coming soon is designed to help people better locate information by showing more than one featured snippet that’s related to what they originally searched for:</p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--medium h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--4 h-c-grid__col--offset-4 "><img alt="FeaturedSnippet_7.png" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/FeaturedSnippet_7.max-1000x1000.png"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>Showing more than one featured snippet may also eventually help in cases where you can get contradictory information when asking about the same thing but in different ways.</p><p>For instance, people who search for “<a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=are+reptiles+good+pets">are reptiles good pets</a>” should get the same featured snippet as “<a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=are+reptiles+bad+pets">are reptiles bad pets</a>” since they are seeking the same information: how do reptiles rate as pets? However, the featured snippets we serve contradict each other. <br/></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="FeaturedSnippet_8.png" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/FeaturedSnippet_8.max-1000x1000.png"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>This happens because sometimes our systems favor content that’s strongly aligned with what was asked. A page arguing that reptiles are good pets seems the best match for people who search about them being good. Similarly, a page arguing that reptiles are bad pets seems the best match for people who search about them being bad. We’re exploring solutions to this challenge, including showing multiple responses.</p><p>"There are often legitimate diverse perspectives offered by publishers, and we want to provide users visibility and access into those perspectives from multiple sources,” Matthew Gray, the software engineer who leads the featured snippets team, told me.<br/></p><p></p><h2>Your feedback wanted</h2>Featured snippets will never be absolutely perfect, just as search results overall will never be absolutely perfect. On a typical day, 15 percent of the queries we process have never been asked before. As a Black man from a lower socioeconomic background, attending Howard University was critical to developing a more optimistic sense of personal and cultural identity. The result was a stronger vision of my future.</p><br/><p>Joining Google as a software engineer in 2015 became a part of that vision. Not only have I grown professionally, I've drawn on my cultural experience to help make Google’s products, services and culture more inclusive. During my tenure, I’ve served as the global co-chair of the Black Googlers Network (BGN) and have relied on the work ethic I developed as a teenager helping provide for my family to inspire my team to achieve rigorous milestones and launch features on Firebase, Google Analytics and Google Cloud. I also helped Google to better prepare students from diverse backgrounds for careers in tech by serving as a Google faculty member in the <a href="https://blog.google/topics/diversity/howard-university-opens-new-campus-googleplex/">Howard West pilot program</a>.</p><br/><p>Today is a big moment for Howard West. We’re announcing that in 2018, the program will expand from the original three-month residency to a full academic year—and for students not only at Howard, but also from other esteemed Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Students and faculty noted both the rigor and immersion in life at Google as the program’s most compelling aspects, and the Googlers involved felt there was a true exchange of knowledge, culture and understanding. Almost all of the students were rising juniors, making them eligible to apply for full software engineering internships at Google this coming summer. Notably, when the session concluded, 14 students applied. Four of them received offers, and they all accepted. Go Bison!</p><br/><p>One of my favorite experiences from the pilot came from mentoring a group of students as they designed, implemented and launched an Angular web application as apart of their coursework. I tasked them with formal responsibilities, such as Technical Lead (TL), Product Manager (PM), etc. One of the students expressed interest in the responsibilities of a TL, but was nervous about officially taking the role. I encouraged her to just dive in, and she ended up exemplifying the role and becoming a model to other students in the program. Of course I use Google Photos to share these memories, which often leads to a bunch of questions about the app. As an engineer for Google Photos, I’m used to getting all kinds of questions, and I have a few go-to tips up my sleeve:</p><p><b>1. Don't forget to share</b></p><p>If you take an awesome photo of your friend and no one ever sees it, did you even take it at all? This is an existential question of our time, and <a href="https://www.blog.google/products/photos/give-and-get-photos-you-care-about/">suggested sharing</a> in Google Photos can help. It makes sure the important people in your life <i>actually</i> get the photos you take of them. Go to the “Sharing” tab, and at the top, you’ll see personal suggestions, based on your sharing habits and the people in the photos. No more excuses for letting those awesome pictures sit on your phone. Hint hint, Dad ;)<br/></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><figure class="article-image--full article-module "><img alt="Sharing-tab-motion" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/sharing-tab-motion_EN8pVlg.gif"/></figure></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p><b>2. Free up space on your phone</b></p><p>We all know how hard it is to decide which of your photos or apps or music to delete so you don’t run out of storage. Fortunately, Google Photos lets you free up space on your device once your photos and videos are safely backed up so you never run out of storage again. To get started, tap the side menu and choose “Free up space.” Google Photos will find the photos you’ve already backed up and help you remove them from your phone to create space for new memories. <br/></p><p><br/></p><p><b>3. Organize your most important memories </b></p><p>I have thousands (74,357 to be exact!) of photos featuring the important people and four-legged friends in my life—like my friend’s pup, Oliver. With Google Photos, I don't have to scroll for twenty minutes just to find the photo of him in the park. I can simply type in "Oliver park.” To set this up, head to albums and select "People and Pets." Next, name your favorites.<br/></p><p><br/></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--medium h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--4 h-c-grid__col--offset-4 "><img alt="pet-sharing" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/pets-mkting-pixel2-600x1000-optimized.gif"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>When I was looking at my dad’s photos over the holidays, nearly half of them were of receipts or documents. Nobody wants to see those when scrolling through vacation pictures! Google Photos can help you clear the clutter by archiving your photos. Choose the photos you want to archive, tap the three dots in the top right corner, and select “Archive” (or use the archive suggestions in the Assistant tab). If you need to see that receipt again, you can always access these photos in your “Archive” folder.</p><p>Whether you want to be more organized or better at sharing your photos in 2018, I hope these tips are helpful. We’ve witnessed everything from a <a href="https://poly.google.com/view/ax_nU30cL8G">retro roller skate</a>, to an <a href="https://poly.google.com/view/cPPOSTz2FIA">old timey photograph</a>, to our very own <a href="https://poly.google.com/view/2mq7ScdwvdZ">JUMP camera</a>. We've also gotten tons of feedback about ways we could improve the experience. The latest release, available today on Steam and the Oculus Store, has lots of new features that make Blocks more powerful and even easier to use. Let's take a look.</p><h2>Environment Options</h2><p>Modeling in the desert got you seeing 3D mirages? Don’t fret, you’ll now have the option to pick from four modeling environments. We’ve added a night version of the current environment for those who found the desert a bit too bright after long creation sessions. You’ll also find plain white and black options. Make sure to look up while creating in the black environment for a night sky surprise. Plus, we’ll remember which environment you used in your last session and automatically default to that selection your next time around.<br/></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="Models_Optimize.gif" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/Models_Optimize.gif"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><h2>Improved Snapping</h2><p>The ability to snap objects, edges and vertices together helps make your creations precise. However, we heard that the existing snapping behavior was often unpredictable or difficult to control. To ensure every snap you make does what you expect it to do, we’ve vastly improved our snapping algorithm and introduced a brand new user experience to guide you.</p><p>When trying to snap two objects together, make sure to half-press the alternate trigger to see a helpful guide line. Here’s a breakdown:</p><p><br/></p><p><b>Non-coplanar face mode</b><b>:</b> Many of you have noticed that Blocks will create coplanar faces when reshaping meshes. This is helpful in many cases, but in others it creates extraneous triangles that make further operations like perfect subdivision difficult. Now you can enable non-coplanar faces to avoid creation of extra triangles.<br/></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="NCPM" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/noncoplanar.gif"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p><b>Loop subdivide</b><b>:</b> Subdivision can be a really powerful tool. It’s even more powerful if you can cut a loop around an entire mesh. With loop subdivide enabled, simply long press on the trigger while subdividing to see a perfect subdivision loop form around your object.</p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="Models_LoopCut.gif" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/Models_LoopCut.gif"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p><b>Edge, Face and Vertex Deletion</b><b>:</b> Many have asked for the ability to delete a single edge, face or vertex. With this feature enabled, use the eraser tool to do just that. We'll “collapse” the mesh based on the edge, face or vertex you delete.</p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="EraseEdgeGif" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/erase-an-edge.gif"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p><b>Worldspace grids</b><b>:</b> Another option that helps with precision is enabling worldspace grids. This feature will show grids along every side of your worldspace. The grid units are equivalent to the actual worldspace grid units, so you can precisely measure and place objects along the grids.</p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="Models_Worldspace.gif" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/Models_Worldspace.gif"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p><b>Volume insertion ruler</b><b>:</b> Modeling very precisely in Blocks can be difficult without a sense of relative scale. And amazingly, Indonesia’s online journey has just gotten started—Indonesians continue to embrace the internet rapidly and half of Indonesia’s population has yet to connect to the internet. </p><p>Indonesia already has a thriving internet economy and a bustling startup scene, home to four of Southeast Asia’s eight “unicorns,” but we’d like to do more to help supercharge and grow with it. So, to help Indonesians build the next great startup, we’ve already trained nearly 60,000 Indonesians on mobile app development, toward our goal of reaching 100,000 developers by 2020. And to help more Indonesian small businesses tap into the power of the internet, our <a href="https://gapuradigital.withgoogle.com/">Gapura Digital</a> initiative has trained more than 40,000 small business owners in 10 cities, with more cities to come. </p><p>To help all Indonesians access information and get things done, we continue to work on <a href="https://www.blog.google/topics/google-asia/11-announcements-google-indonesia/">products and features with Indonesians in mind</a>. Indonesia was the second country globally to get Google Station, our product to deliver high-quality public Wi-Fi with local partners. We have also designed products to work for Indonesians. YouTube Go helps Indonesians watch their favorite videos even with poor connectivity. And most recently, Indonesia was one of the first two countries in the world to get our new app, Google Go, which makes searching the internet faster and simpler for Indonesians on slow connections. <br/></p><p></p><p>But there is still more we can do to support and participate in Indonesia’s growth. That’s why we’ve invested in one of Indonesia’s leading startups, GO-JEK. GO-JEK is led by a strong Indonesian management team and has a proven track record of using technology to make life more convenient for Indonesians across the country. This investment lets us partner with a great local champion in Indonesia’s flourishing startup ecosystem, while also deepening our commitment to Indonesia’s internet economy.</p><p>By investing in local companies, building locally relevant products and training local talent, we hope to see more amazing local champions like GO-JEK emerge in Indonesia. As always, we’re driven and inspired by our users and partners and are always on the the lookout for more opportunities to support them. <i>Terima kasih dan sampai jumpa lagi</i>.<br/></p></div></div></body></html><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~4/VEJkHqG8tuc" height="1" width="1" alt=""/>Mon, 29 Jan 2018 03:30:00 -0000Mon, 29 Jan 2018 03:30:00 -0000The Official Google BlogIt’s about to glow down ... with #teampixelhttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/azSaru32iwo/<html><head></head><body><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>This week, #teampixel took a shot in the dark (with the help of HDR+ which makes Pixel cameras really good at capturing photos in low light). To wrap up the week, today’s post comes from guest author Veronica Lara, Senior Editor of The Economist Intelligence Unit.</i></p><p>The need for education systems to evolve along with the demands of the global economy is certain. But the question of how to implement this change in classrooms is less clear. <a href="http://www.eiu.com/home.aspx">The Economist Intelligence Unit</a> (EIU), the research and analysis division of The Economist Group, conducted a study sponsored by Google for Education that explores this question in depth. The research examines the strategies that are most effective for developing 21st century skills, or a mix of soft skills (e.g., problem solving and collaboration) and foundational literacies (e.g., mathematics and reading). It also investigates how technology can support such efforts.</p><p>Our report, “<a href="https://perspectives.eiu.com/talent-education/fostering-exploration-and-excellence-21st-century-schools">Fostering exploration and excellence in 21st century schools</a>,” discusses the findings of the research, which draws on a survey of 1,200 teachers and administrators in 16 countries. It builds upon a <a href="https://perspectives.eiu.com/talent-education/driving-skills-agenda">2015 EIU study</a> that was also sponsored by Google for Education, in which more than half of the global executives surveyed reported that a lack of skills was hurting their organizations’ performance. Considering that schools are pivotal to laying a foundation for future learning and success, what do educators say can be done in classrooms to promote the needed skills?</p><p></p><p>Our latest study found that a holistic approach is key. This includes integrating different educational strategies and techniques, and empowering teachers with greater autonomy. Some of our top findings are:</p></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p><b>1. Teachers should use a range of strategies to effectively deliver what students need to learn.</b><br/>Indeed, 79% of educators believe that soft skills need to be developed alongside foundational literacies. Educators most frequently cite the following teaching strategies as “very important” and “most effective” in developing the skills needed in the 21st century workplace: active learning (engaging students in activities, such as reading, writing, discussion and/or problem solving); project-based learning (students working on complex and/or real-world challenges); cognitive activation (encouraging students to focus on the method they use to reach a solution rather than the solution itself); and personalized learning (addressing the needs and interests of individual students).</p><p><b>2. Technology can best support teaching strategies by promoting interaction, engagement and communication.</b><br/>Out of the educators surveyed, 82% agree that technology is a valuable tool for developing skills for the modern workplace—most often when it’s used to support the top teaching strategies. In particular, 77% of educators agree that technology can make lessons more engaging. It can also help free up time for lesson planning and encourage collaboration. </p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="image2.png" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/image2.max-1000x1000.png"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><b>3. Teacher autonomy matters.</b><p>There is a strong correlation between teacher autonomy and school readiness to teach both foundational literacies and soft skills. For example, educators who assess their schools as having “much better” teacher autonomy nearly twice as often say they are “very well equipped” to teach communication skills when compared with the rest of the sample. A similar pattern holds across other 21st century skills we studied.</p><p></p><p></p><p><b>4. Budget constraints are the most common barrier to innovation.</b><br/>More than half of the educators we surveyed cite budget limitations as the most significant barrier to adopting new teaching strategies (51%) and technologies (53%). When it comes to adopting new teaching strategies, 27% cite lack of technology access in schools and 27% cite a lack of national policy support as the most significant barrier. For adopting new technologies, insufficient technology access in schools is the second-most commonly cited barrier (29%).</p><p></p><p><b>5. Educators are divided over how fast to innovate.</b><br/>Great majorities favor at least some action towards adopting new teaching strategies (85%) and technologies (83%). But opinions vary about how quickly schools should innovate within the classroom. Educators most often advocate a cautious approach for implementing new teaching strategies and technologies. This slower approach allows potential innovations to be investigated and tested before adoption.</p><p></p><p>The educators we surveyed agree that various innovative teaching strategies can help students develop the requisite skills for the 21st century workplace, and technology can support the effective execution of these strategies. Crucially, teachers themselves are a vital resource with great potential for preparing students for their working lives. “How effective technology is in a learning environment depends a lot on how robust the curriculum is and how much the teachers are working together to continuously improve,” says Justin Reich, assistant professor of Comparative Media Studies at MIT, and director of the MIT Teaching Systems Lab, one of our report’s featured experts. Do it again. When it comes to data analysis, it’s easy to fall into routine. But no matter how much of a whiz you are at formulas or pivot tables, superb spreadsheet skills only take you so far if you’re working with multiple versions or outdated datasets.</p><p>On average, <a href="https://www.bettercloud.com/monitor/state-of-cloud-it-2016/">employees spend</a> up to eight hours each week—an entire work day—searching for and consolidating information. What if businesses spent their time applying data insights instead of tracking them down?</p><p>We designed cloud-based tools, like Google Sheets, to make it easier to quickly organize and analyze information in one place. Here are five reasons why you should try using Sheets.</p><h2>1. Your data always stays up to date.</h2><p></p></div></div><div class="block-paragraph_with_image"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid uni-paragraph-wrap"><div class="uni-paragraph h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--8 h-c-grid__col-m--6 h-c-grid__col-l--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-2 h-c-grid__col-m--offset-3 h-c-grid__col-l--offset-3"><figure class="article-image--wrap-medium "><img alt="Image 1 - Sheets" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/Sheets_Version_History_BLOG_1.gif"/></figure><div class="rich-text"><p>Working in the cloud means your data can easily stay up to date because information is automatically saved as it’s typed. Multiple team members can collaborate in real-time from their phone, tablet or computer (online and offline) and create a single source of truth for projects, like quarterly budgets.</p><p>Need personalization? No problem. You can look at the same data as your coworkers <a href="https://goo.gl/wfmfnE">without disrupting their view</a>, <a href="https://goo.gl/wfmfnE">sort information</a> to be in a specific order or <a href="https://goo.gl/6ytKfM">hide sheets</a> that you don’t need to see. If you’re worried about others mucking up your data, you can <a href="https://goo.gl/6ytKfM">protect cells</a> by setting custom share settings. Plus, you don’t have to worry about version control. You can see changes or revert to previous versions in <b>File > Version History</b> or by clicking on <b>“All Changes Saved in Drive”</b> at the top of your Sheet.</p><p></p></div></div></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><h2>2. You can use Google’s artificial intelligence to speed up analysis.</h2></div></div><div class="block-paragraph_with_image"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid uni-paragraph-wrap"><div class="uni-paragraph h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--8 h-c-grid__col-m--6 h-c-grid__col-l--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-2 h-c-grid__col-m--offset-3 h-c-grid__col-l--offset-3"><figure class="article-image--wrap-medium "><img alt="Image 2 - Sheets" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/LAUNCHsheetbundle_blog_1_2.gif"/></figure><div class="rich-text"><p>Powered by Google’s machine intelligence, Sheets does a lot of the <a href="https://www.blog.google/products/docs/explore-docs-sheets-and-slides/">heavy lifting</a> for you when it comes to data analysis. You can ask a question about your data and Sheets will return an answer using natural language processing. Sheets also <a href="https://www.blog.google/products/g-suite/visualize-data-instantly-machine-learning-google-sheets/">builds charts</a>, <a href="https://www.blog.google/products/g-suite/pivot-cloud-intelligent-features-google-sheets-help-businesses-uncover-insights/">suggests formulas</a> and <a href="https://www.blog.google/products/g-suite/pivot-cloud-intelligent-features-google-sheets-help-businesses-uncover-insights/">creates pivot tables</a> for you.</p><p>Data gurus who want to take analysis a step further can <a href="https://blog.google/products/g-suite/analyze-your-business-data-explore-google-sheets-use-bigquery-too/">sync Sheets to BigQuery</a> to analyze information against large data sets. Check out <a href="https://goo.gl/67XnSp">this example</a> or <a href="https://cloud.google.com/blog/big-data/2017/12/analyzing-text-in-a-google-sheet-using-cloud-natural-language-api-and-apps-script">this example</a>.</p></div></div></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><h2>3. You can help keep your data secure. </h2><p>We built <a href="https://goo.gl/B7LAAd">security features</a> across G Suite to help you manage your most sensitive business information. Sheets is no exception.</p><p>Clicking “Share” in the upper righthand corner of your Sheet determines access settings for individual team members, so you stay in control of who can view, edit or comment on your documents. Additional IRM (Information Rights Management) controls allow you to easily <a href="https://goo.gl/UB72Xm">disable options</a> to download, copy or print spreadsheets, and you can <a href="https://goo.gl/1kWg8c">set expiration dates</a> if you need to suspend access to confidential information. Admins also have the power to restrict file sharing within an organization or to whitelist domains.</p></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><h2>4. You can work the way you’re used to working.</h2><p>We get it—you need tools that won’t interrupt work processes (especially if you’ve used those processes forever). That’s why we’ve baked in functionality that teams are used to using.</p><p></p><ul><li><b>Let’s start with functions.</b> You can use <a href="https://goo.gl/oB5TdU">hundreds of functions</a> that you’re used to working with, like VLOOKUP, SUMIFS and IPMT. We’ve also created unique-to-Sheets functions to help you crunch numbers in new ways, like: <a href="https://goo.gl/FmCK9T">FILTER</a> to quickly organize a spreadsheet according to an input, <a href="https://goo.gl/cMhg1r">QUERY</a> to pull specific results out of a central dataset or <a href="https://goo.gl/ZEgN9n">GOOGLEFINANCE</a> to source data directly from <a href="http://google.com/finance">Google Finance</a>. Outside of functions, you can also <a href="https://goo.gl/NAM878">create pivot tables</a> to analyze your data (or let Sheets <a href="https://www.blog.google/products/g-suite/pivot-cloud-intelligent-features-google-sheets-help-businesses-uncover-insights/">do it for you</a>.).<br/></li><li><b>What about organization?</b> Color cells using <a href="https://support.google.com/docs/answer/78413">Conditional Formatting</a>, create drop-down lists with <a href="https://goo.gl/9i2XJD">Data Validation</a> or <a href="https://goo.gl/F4ErxA">freeze headers</a> at the top of your sheet, to make your data presentation-friendly. Once your data is organized, you can <a href="https://goo.gl/zxkphV">visualize</a> it in pie charts, bar charts, line charts—<a href="https://goo.gl/QnjqXi">charts galore</a>. <br/></li><li><b>Editing on the fly.</b> Sheets is available online and <a href="https://goo.gl/8ZE74o">offline</a>—and on desktop web browsers, and <a href="https://goo.gl/ZtfHqz">Android</a> and <a href="https://goo.gl/rbuXwq">iOS</a> apps—which means your teams don’t have to stop working during business travel or when Wi-Fi is down.<br/></li></ul><p></p><h2>5. You can automate processes.</h2><p>When information is in one place, it’s easier to automate processes. Let’s say you need to order supplies for your office.
