In deciding what to delist, search engines like Google must consider if the information in question is “inaccurate, inadequate, irrelevant or excessive”—and whether there is a public interest in the information remaining available in search results.</p><br/><p>Understanding how we make these types of decisions—and how people are using new rights like those granted by the European Court—is important. Since 2014, we’ve provided information about “right to be forgotten” delisting requests in our <a href="https://transparencyreport.google.com/eu-privacy/overview">Transparency Report</a>, including the number of URLs submitted to us, the number of URLs delisted and not delisted, and anonymized examples of some of the requests we have received.</p><h2>New data in the Transparency Report</h2><br/><p>Today, we’re expanding the scope of our transparency reporting about the “right to be forgotten” and adding new data going back to January 2016 when our reviewers started manually annotating each URL submitted to us with additional information, including:</p><br/><ul><li><p><b>Requesters:</b>We show a breakdown of the requests made by private individuals vs. non-private individuals—e.g., government officials or corporate entities.</p></li></ul><ul><li><p><b>Content of the request:</b>We classify the content that the individual has asked us to delist into a set of categories: personal information, professional information, crime, and name not found, meaning that we were not able to find the individual’s name on the page.</p></li></ul><ul><li><p><b>Content of the site:</b> When we evaluate a URL for potential delisting, we classify the website that hosts the page as a directory site, news site, social media, or other.</p></li><li><p><b>Content delisting rate:</b>This is the rate at which we delist content by category on a quarterly basis.</p></li></ul><br/><h2>Looking back: analyzing three years of delisting requests</h2><br/><p>In addition to updating the Transparency Report, we’re also providing a snapshot of our efforts to process these requests over the last three years.</p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><figure class="article-image--full article-module "><img alt="rtbf_infographic.png" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/rtbf_test.max-1000x1000.png"/></figure></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>We’re also releasing the draft of a new research paper called <a href="https://g.co/research/rtbf_report"><i>Three Years of the Right to be Forgotten</i></a>, which has been submitted to the <a href="https://petsymposium.org/">Privacy Enhancing Technologies Symposium</a> for peer review. At Mobile World Congress, we're launching ARCore 1.0 along with new support for developers, and we’re releasing updates for Lens and rolling it out to more people.</p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="ARCore lockup" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/logo_ARCore_lockup_Horizontal.max-1000x1000.png"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>ARCore, Google’s <a href="https://developers.google.com/ar/">augmented reality SDK</a> for Android, is out of preview and launching as version 1.0. Developers can now publish AR apps to the Play Store, and it’s a great time to start building. ARCore works on 100 million Android smartphones, and advanced AR capabilities are available on all of these devices. It works on 13 different models right now (Google’s Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL; Samsung’s Galaxy S8, S8+, Note8, S7 and S7 edge; LGE’s V30 and V30+ (Android O only); ASUS’s Zenfone AR; and OnePlus’s OnePlus 5). And beyond those available today, we’re partnering with many manufacturers to enable their upcoming devices this year, including Samsung, Huawei, LGE, Motorola, ASUS, Xiaomi, HMD/Nokia, ZTE, Sony Mobile, and Vivo.</p><p>Making ARCore work on more devices is only part of the equation. We’re also bringing developers additional improvements and support to make their AR development process faster and easier. ARCore 1.0 features improved environmental understanding that enables users to place virtual assets on textured surfaces like posters, furniture, toy boxes, books, cans and more. Android Studio Beta now supports ARCore in the <a href="https://developers.google.com/ar/develop/java/emulator">Emulator</a>, so you can quickly test your app in a virtual environment right from your desktop.</p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="TreeGif" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/tree.gif"/></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>Everyone should get to experience augmented reality, so we’re working to bring it to people everywhere, including China. Ghostbusters World, based on the <a href="http://ghostbustersworld.com/">film franchise</a>, is coming soon. In China, place furniture and over 100,000 other pieces with Easyhome Homestyler, see items and place them in your home when you shop on JD.com, or play games from NetEase, Wargaming and Game Insight.</p></div></div><div class="block-image_carousel"><div class="h-c-page article-module"><div class="article-module glue-pagination h-c-carousel h-c-carousel--simple h-c-carousel--dark ng-cloak" data-glue-pagination-config="{cyclical: true}"><div class="h-c-carousel__wrap"><ul class="glue-carousel ng-cloak" data-glue-carousel-options="{pointerTypes: ['touch', 'mouse'], jump: true}"><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/screenshot_10.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">PorscheAR</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text">Porsche</div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/SWAPSCENE-TRANLIV_Crgb7Bx.gif);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">SIR2</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text">Sotheby's International Reality</div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/gbworldgif.gif);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">GBWorld</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text">Ghostbusters World</div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/original_images/campnou.gif);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">SnapAR4</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text">Snapchat</div></figcaption></figure></li></ul><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate glue-pagination-previous" data-glue-pagination-label="Previous" data-glue-pagination-update-model="false"><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate-wrap"><svg class="h-c-icon h-c-icon--keyboard-arrow-left" role="img"><use xlink:href="#mi-keyboard-arrow-right"></use></svg></div></div><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate glue-pagination-next" data-glue-pagination-label="Next" data-glue-pagination-update-model="false"><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate-wrap"><svg class="h-c-icon h-c-icon--keyboard-arrow-right" role="img"><use xlink:href="#mi-keyboard-arrow-right"></use></svg></div></div></div><div class="h-c-carousel__navigation"><div class="glue-pagination-page-list"></div></div></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>With Google Lens, your phone’s camera can help you understand the world around you, and we’re expanding availability of the Google Lens preview. We’ve been focused on making the Assistant useful throughout all parts of your day, and <a href="https://www.blog.google/products/assistant/new-devices-more-google-assistant-ces-2018/">earlier this year</a> we showed the latest features we’re bringing to the Assistant in homes and in cars.</p><p>As we head into <a href="https://www.mobileworldcongress.com/">Mobile World Congress</a>, the mobile industry’s largest trade show, we're sharing more about how we’re working closely with the mobile ecosystem to bring the Assistant to more people around the world. Similar to <a href="https://blog.google/products/android/best-android-and-google-android-oreo-go-edition-and-android-one/">Android</a>, where we've partnered closely with mobile carriers and device makers to build great products for people everywhere, we’re taking an ecosystem approach to the Assistant on mobile. Here's a look at what's coming.</p><p><b>Bringing the Assistant to more than 30 languages</b></p><p>Android users are all around the world, so from the start, our goal has been to bring the Assistant to as many people, languages, and locations as possible. The Assistant is already <a href="https://support.google.com/assistant/answer/7172657?co=GENIE.Platform%3DAndroid&hl=en">available</a> in eight languages, and by the end of the year it will be available in more than 30 languages, reaching 95 percent of all eligible Android phones worldwide. In the next few months, we’ll bring the Assistant to Danish, Dutch, Hindi, Indonesian, Norwegian, Swedish and Thai on Android phones and iPhones, and we’ll add more languages on more devices throughout the year.</p><p>We’re also making the Assistant multilingual later this year, so families or individuals that speak more than one language can speak naturally to the Assistant. With this new feature, the Assistant will be able to understand you in multiple languages fluently. If you prefer to speak German at work, but French at home, your Assistant is right there with you. Multilingual will first be available in English, French and German, with support for more languages coming over time.</p><p><b>Building a great Assistant for phones</b></p><p>Since <a href="https://blog.google/products/assistant/google-assistant-coming-to-more-android-phones/">MWC last year</a>, we've been working closely with device makers (OEMs) to bring all the capabilities of the Assistant to life on Android phones. This year, we’re bringing these efforts together as the Assistant Mobile OEM program, which will enable OEMs to build deeper integrations between the Assistant and device features, using natural language understanding and the conversational interfaces of the Assistant. We’ve already been working with OEMs for more than a year and continue to work together so they can build device-specific commands with the Assistant, develop integration with hardware-based AI chips, ensure “Ok Google" and "Hey Google" work when the screen is off, and build other custom integrations. Coming soon, we’ll also have new integrations from LG, Sony Mobile and Xiaomi.</p><p>Mobile carriers also play a critical role in delivering great mobile experiences to people through their networks and services. Our Assistant Carrier program helps mobile carriers use capabilities in the Assistant to give their customers more insight and control over their service. This includes helping people learn more about their plan, add new services (like international data roaming), get customer support and more. This gives carriers a new way to support their customers while reducing response time. Carriers Sprint, Koodo, Telus and Vodafone are already developing integrations with the Assistant, with more coming soon.</p><p><b>A better experience across devices</b></p><p>The Assistant can already help you keep track of your day, control your smart home devices, make calls, find recipes and more. Starting over the next week, we’re adding two new features that help you use the Assistant across all the devices in your life.</p><ul><li><b>Routines</b>: We first announced <a href="https://blog.google/products/assistant/google-assistant-powering-our-new-family-hardware/">Routines</a> last year, which help you get multiple things done with just a single command. In the coming weeks in the U.S., you’ll be able to use six routines that help with your morning, commutes to and from work, and evening at home. For example, say “Hey Google, I’m home” and the Assistant on your Google Home or phone can turn on the lights, share any home reminders, play your favorite music and more, all with just four words.</li><li><b>Location-based reminders</b>: You can already set reminders based on a location with the Assistant on your phone. In the coming weeks, you’ll also be able to set them with your speaker. Want to make sure you pick up the milk at the grocery store? All you have to do is ask the Assistant on your smart speaker, like Google Home—and when you get to the store, the Assistant on your phone will remind you.</li></ul><p>With more languages, more features and closer integrations with phone makers and carriers, the Assistant is getting better for you.</p></div></div></body></html><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~4/PyC7l_0HEks" height="1" width="1" alt=""/>Fri, 23 Feb 2018 14:00:00 -0000Fri, 23 Feb 2018 14:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogMicrosoft’s iOS OneDrive app updates with enhanced security

As of today, we are working with 43 carriers and device manufacturers to bring better native messaging to every Android user.</p><p><b>Rich messaging for brands</b></p><p>Last year we created an <a href="https://blog.google/topics/rcs/delivering-rcs-messaging-android-users-worldwide/">Early Access Program</a> to make it easier for brands to start participating in <a href="http://jibe.google.com/business-messaging">RCS business messaging</a> (the mobile industry's term for rich business-to-consumer messages). Today companies across food, travel, retail and delivery services in the U.S. and Mexico are starting to have better conversations with their customers using RCS as part of our Early Access Program.</p><p>With RCS, businesses can send more useful and interactive messages to their customers. This means, for example, that a retailer can send beautiful images of their products, rather than a text message, and even let the customer select and buy something, all without leaving the messaging app. Best of all, customers who have already opted in to SMS messages from a business get this upgraded experience automatically in Android Messages.</p><p>In the U.S., we’ve collaborated with Sprint to enable campaigns with 1-800 Contacts, 1-800-Flowers.com, Booking.com, SnapTravel and Subway, among others, along with messaging partners 3C, CM.com, Mobivity, OpenMarket, Smooch and Twilio. We’re also working with Telcel to bring campaigns to Mexico soon with 5 Piso, Broxel, DHL Mexico and Secretaria de Salud along with messaging partners Airmovil, Auronix, Aldeamo and Tiaxa.</p></div></div><div class="block-image_carousel"><div class="h-c-page article-module"><div class="article-module glue-pagination h-c-carousel h-c-carousel--simple h-c-carousel--dark ng-cloak" data-glue-pagination-config="{cyclical: true}"><div class="h-c-carousel__wrap"><ul class="glue-carousel ng-cloak" data-glue-carousel-options="{pointerTypes: ['touch', 'mouse'], jump: true}"><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/8_2_1.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">Booking.com-RCS</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text">Credit: Booking.com</div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/1_1_1.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">Subway-RCS</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text">Credit: Subway</div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/10_3.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">1-800-Flowers-RCS</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text">Credit: 1-800-Flowers.com</div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/11.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">1-800 Contacts-RCS</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text">Credit: 1-800 Contacts</div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/4_mg9IijE.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">SnapTravel</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text">Credit: SnapTravel</div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/5_2_1.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">DHL-RCS</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text">Credit: DHL Mexico</div></figcaption></figure></li><li class="h-c-carousel__item article-carousel__slide"><figure><div class="article-carousel__slide-img" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/6_2.max-2800x2800.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">SdS-RCS</span></div><figcaption class="article-carousel__caption h-c-copy h-u-mt-std"><div class="rich-text">Credit: Secretaria de Salud</div></figcaption></figure></li></ul><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate glue-pagination-previous" data-glue-pagination-label="Previous" data-glue-pagination-update-model="false"><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate-wrap"><svg class="h-c-icon h-c-icon--keyboard-arrow-left" role="img"><use xlink:href="#mi-keyboard-arrow-right"></use></svg></div></div><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate glue-pagination-next" data-glue-pagination-label="Next" data-glue-pagination-update-model="false"><div class="h-c-carousel__paginate-wrap"><svg class="h-c-icon h-c-icon--keyboard-arrow-right" role="img"><use xlink:href="#mi-keyboard-arrow-right"></use></svg></div></div></div><div class="h-c-carousel__navigation"><div class="glue-pagination-page-list"></div></div></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>In the coming months alongside our partners, we’ll bring RCS messaging to businesses in more regions. The companies that joined the brief argue that Congress must act to resolve the complicated policy questions raised by the case, as Congress is best-suited to weigh the important interests of law enforcement, foreign countries, service providers and, of course, the people who use the services.</p><p><a href="https://www.congress.gov/115/bills/s2383/BILLS-115s2383is.pdf">Pending legislation</a> in the U.S. Congress—the Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data (CLOUD) Act—would make important strides in addressing the issues raised in the Microsoft case by updating the decades-old Electronic Communications Privacy Act. Notably, the bill clarifies that the physical location of data is not a relevant criterion in determining the data disclosure obligations of U.S. service providers.</p><p>We wanted to share a little more information on why we think this is important and what it means for our customers and users. Modern distributed networks function in ways that do not focus on data location. As more people and businesses turn to the cloud to keep their data secure and ensure their services are dependable, infrastructure has had to grow and evolve to meet those demands. Global networks offer end users a level of dependability that previously required the most sophisticated backup technologies and significant individual hardware investment. Understanding how a global distributed network like ours works is key to understanding the benefits it offers and the challenges that are presented by laws that focus on where data is stored.</p><h2>Growth of the public cloud</h2><p>It’s been an important goal of Internet companies like ours to offer services that can be accessed by hundreds-of-millions of users no matter where they are. These services have to be fast, reliable, robust, and resilient. From our earliest days, it was essential that our index, with its links to vast swaths of content, be as comprehensive as possible. But beyond that, it was also critical that the service be fast. Increasing the speed of search meant a vastly improved experience for users otherwise accustomed to long load times over slow internet connections.</p><p>Through the years, we’ve worked hard to continually improve how we serve users in all corners of the world. From an infrastructure perspective, this has meant focusing on how best to route data securely, balance processing loads and storage needs, and prevent data loss, corruption, and outages.</p><p>Public cloud services operate on a global basis, using geographically distributed infrastructure to ensure that the services that run on them have maximum availability and uptime. Data typically no longer resides on a single hard drive or server rack, or even in a single data center. Instead, it must be stored, secured, and made available in a way that allows it to be accessed by the users who depend on it just as easily in India as in Germany.</p><h2>Focus on the user</h2><p>The way we handle data is driven by what’s best for our users, regardless of whether that user is an individual or a large enterprise. To provide them with the reliability, efficiency, resiliency, and speed they depend on, data might need to be stored in many different configurations across a global network.</p><p>Cloud infrastructure also offers business customers more control over where and how their data is stored, depending on their needs. These customers may choose to store their data in a country or data center near their corporate headquarters, or as close to their users as possible.</p><p>With customer needs in mind, cloud providers balance factors ranging from internet bandwidth, the likelihood of power outages over available networks, and network throughput. This short video explains how these considerations come to life on a distributed network, using the photo a Gmail user attaches to a message as an example.</p></div></div><div class="block-video"><div class="article-module article-video "><figure><a class="h-c-video h-c-video--marquee" data-glue-modal-disabled-on-mobile="true" data-glue-modal-trigger="uni-modal-TO362EVz3tM-" href="https://youtube.com/watch?v=TO362EVz3tM"><div class="article-video__aspect-image" style="background-image: url(https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/Screen_Shot_2018-02-21_at_10.32.38_PM.max-1000x1000.png);"><span class="h-u-visually-hidden">distributed-network</span></div><svg class="h-c-video__play h-c-icon h-c-icon--color-white" role="img"><use xlink:href="#mi-youtube-icon"></use></svg></a></figure></div><div class="h-c-modal--video" data-glue-modal="uni-modal-TO362EVz3tM-" data-glue-modal-close-label="Close Dialog"><a class="glue-yt-video" data-glue-yt-video-autoplay="true" data-glue-yt-video-height="99%" data-glue-yt-video-vid="TO362EVz3tM" data-glue-yt-video-width="100%" href="https://youtube.com/watch?v=TO362EVz3tM" ng-cloak=""></a></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><h2>Enhancing the security and integrity of your data</h2><p>As this video explains, individual data files may be broken up into smaller pieces, stored, or moved to keep them safe and accessible. Modern internet networks increasingly transmit and store data intelligently, often moving and replicating data seamlessly between data centers and across borders in order to protect the integrity of the data and maximize efficiency and security for users.</p><p>This technological reality underscores why it’s important that legislative solutions not use data location as a way of determining whether a particular country can exercise jurisdiction over a service provider. As internet providers continue to improve their global networks to better serve their users—whether they’re individuals, businesses, educational institutions or others—it’s important that the law reflects an understanding of technological innovation, and how modern distributed systems function. </p></div></div></body></html><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~4/1y1syNiKykQ" height="1" width="1" alt=""/>Thu, 22 Feb 2018 17:00:00 -0000Thu, 22 Feb 2018 17:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogThe best of Android and Google with Android Oreo (Go edition) and Android Onehttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/k3M_pWrLhfU/<html><head></head><body><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>Monday kicks off <a href="https://www.mobileworldcongress.com/">Mobile World Congress</a> in Barcelona—the mobile industry’s largest trade show. Our partners will be announcing amazing new Android devices, you'll be able to see the growing industry momentum around <a href="https://jibe.google.com/">RCS</a>, and we'll be showcasing the latest from Google including Google Assistant and Lens. Before the show gets underway, I want to take a moment to reflect on where Android is today and where it’s going.</p><h2>Android</h2><p>This fall marks 10 years since the release of the first Android device. Back in 2008, building software for mobile devices was pretty hard. Development was highly fragmented and resource intensive, and there was very limited compatibility across phones. Android began with a bold idea: to solve this problem with a new, open platform that would give mobile developers access to uniform tools and give customers a customized experience with the best mobile technology available.</p><p>Today, Android powers more than 2 billion active devices from 1,300 brands across 24,000 unique products. The platform has thrived because of our commitment to openness and the vibrant ecosystem of manufacturers, developers, mobile operators and component suppliers. And together with our partners, many of which you’ll see next week at MWC, we want to continue to push the boundaries of hardware and software to bring you new amazing experiences and capabilities.</p><p>Android has achieved unprecedented scale in just 10 years, but there are new markets emerging where consistency in experience is becoming even more important. With that in mind, we want to share an update on Android Oreo (Go edition) and Android One, two programs that help people know exactly what they can expect when they pick up an Android device.</p><h2>Android Oreo (Go edition): Delivering on our core values of access and experience</h2><p>We're inspired by the success of Android across a wide range of devices, including entry-level phones which in many cases are the first and only way people get access to the internet. These devices need to be affordable, and the experience needs to be great. We don’t just want to provide people with access—we also want to provide a useful, high-quality experience.</p><p>Last year we <a href="https://blog.google/products/android/2bn-milestone/">introduced</a> Android Oreo (Go edition), an optimized version of Android Oreo tailored for smartphones with 1GB of RAM or less. With a smaller amount of storage and processing power, these phones are less expensive for manufacturers to produce and can be sold at affordable prices, in some cases less than $50. With Android Oreo (Go edition), these phones are able to provide a high-quality experience, with the latest version of Android, Google Play Protect, and dedicated areas in Google Play highlighting apps optimized for Go edition. Android Oreo (Go edition) phones also include a set of apps from Google that are designed to use less memory and storage space, but still offer excellent experiences. For example, Google Go is built specifically to help new smartphone users find the information they want, YouTube Go is optimized for limited connectivity, and the Google Assistant for Android (Go edition) lets people quickly send messages, make calls, set alarms, and more with their voice and a single touch of the screen.</p><p>Starting next week, you’ll see the first set of Android Oreo (Go edition) phones, and soon after they’ll be available for you to purchase.<br/></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><figure class="article-image--full article-module "><img alt="pasted image 0 (9).png" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/pasted_image_0_9_uhZ4aJs.max-1000x1000.png"/></figure></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><h2>Android One: Smart, secure, and simply amazing</h2><p>While the openness of Android means manufacturers have the flexibility to offer unique experiences, we know people want some reassurance about what they can expect when they buy a device. Technology companies can help address the challenges brought on by this change: through <a href="https://blog.google/topics/google-europe/making-frances-digital-potential-work-everyone/">training people in digital skills</a>, improving connectivity and by continuing to build large-scale data center facilities across Europe. To explore the impact of these data centers, we hosted an event, “Global technology, local jobs,” along with <a href="http://www.debatingeurope.eu/">Debating Europe</a>, today in Brussels.</p><p>At this event we heard from EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Crețu, regional development experts, and the consultancy Copenhagen Economics, who just published new research (commissioned by Google) on how investment in data centers, renewable energy and fiber is impacting Europe's regions.</p><p>Since 2007, Google has spent EUR 3.2 billion on constructing and operating data centers in Saint-Ghislain-Mons, Belgium; Hamina-Kotka, Finland; Dublin, Ireland; and Eemshaven, Netherlands. We’ve also spent EUR 1.1 billion on European fiber networks to connect them, and thanks to signing power purchase agreements, enabled EUR 1 billion investment in renewable energy projects.</p><p>Copenhagen Economics crunched the numbers on what this means for citizens, and found that Google’s data center and fiber investments have supported economic activity in Europe by EUR 5.4 billion in gross domestic product in total for the 10-year period from 2007 to 2017. Those same investments supported full-time 6,600 jobs per year on average over the decade, with a significant number of those jobs related to construction, with at peak moments more than 1,500 workers a day working on building one site. You can read the whole report on our <a href="https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/eustory/#main-report">data center site</a>.</p><p>Moreover, when Google grows, these communities grow—we support and work with local business, education, social enterprises and culture. At today’s event, Matt Brittin, Google’s president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, shared the story of Frederic, who works in our Saint-Ghislain-Mons data center in Belgium. He grew up in Quievrain, studied in Mons, lives with his wife and children nearby and recently oversaw the construction of a new solar facility at the site—<a href="https://blog.google/topics/google-europe/time-shine-new-solar-facility-and-additional-data-center-belgium/">the second largest in Wallonia</a>—which was built by a local firm.</p><p>“I’m sharing Frederick’s story because it demonstrates one of the things that make me proudest about our data centers,” Matt told attendees. “The impact they have on the people who work in and around them. This is about investing in real people and communities to help build a better future for everyone.”</p><p>Frederic’s story is far from unique. Google currently employs thousands of people across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, in 35 countries, 56 offices and speaking 67 different languages. And that local presence makes all the difference, as Copenhagen Economics discovered. "A large and well-known company like Google investing in a region can influence others to to do so as well, as they can tap into existing talent, suppliers and resources. As European Commissioner Corina Crețu said at the event, "It's not true that automation only causes job losses—it is also important to highlight that tech can bring jobs and help local communities.”</p><p>Google is committed to Europe, and we want to do more support communities like the 4,400 children who have received <a href="https://www.hanze.nl/nld/organisatie/overzichten/nieuws/googlegaatsamenmethanze-studenten-kinderenlerenprogrammeren">coding and robotics lessons</a> through Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen, near our Eemshaven data center, thanks to our community grants program. And there are <a href="https://www.google.com/about/datacenters/eustory/stories/index.html#!?modal_active=none">many more stories from community members</a> near our data centers about their experiences of having Google in their backyard.</p></div></div><div class="block-video"><div class="article-module article-video "><figure><a class="h-c-video h-c-video--marquee" data-glue-modal-disabled-on-mobile="true" data-glue-modal-trigger="uni-modal-knOecOZCtGo-" href="https://youtube.com/watch?v=knOecOZCtGo"><img alt="Google's EU data center community: Stories from Belgium" src="//img.youtube.com/vi/knOecOZCtGo/maxresdefault.jpg"/><svg class="h-c-video__play h-c-icon h-c-icon--color-white" role="img"><use xlink:href="#mi-youtube-icon"></use></svg></a><figcaption class="article-video__caption h-c-page"><h4 class="h-c-headline h-c-headline--four h-u-font-weight-medium h-u-mt-std">Google's EU data center community: Stories from Belgium</h4></figcaption></figure></div><div class="h-c-modal--video" data-glue-modal="uni-modal-knOecOZCtGo-" data-glue-modal-close-label="Close Dialog"><a class="glue-yt-video" data-glue-yt-video-autoplay="true" data-glue-yt-video-height="99%" data-glue-yt-video-vid="knOecOZCtGo" data-glue-yt-video-width="100%" href="https://youtube.com/watch?v=knOecOZCtGo" ng-cloak=""></a></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>The Digital Single Market is essential in order for everyone in Europe to harness the benefits of tech.
