We just completed the accounting for Google’s 2017 energy use and it’s official—we met our goal. Google’s total purchase of energy from sources like wind and solar exceeded the amount of electricity used by our operations around the world, including offices and data centers.</p><br/><p>What do we mean by “matching” renewable energy? Over the course of 2017, across the globe, for every kilowatt hour of electricity we consumed, we purchased a kilowatt hour of renewable energy from a wind or solar farm that was built specifically for Google. This makes us the first public Cloud, and company of our size, to have achieved this feat.</p><br/><p>Today, we have contracts to purchase three gigawatts (3GW) of output from renewable energy projects; no corporate purchaser buys more renewable energy than we do. At the outset of last year, we felt confident that 2017 was the year we'd meet it. Every year, we sign contracts for new renewable energy generation projects in markets where we have operations. From the time we sign a contract, it takes one to two years to build the wind farm or solar field before it begins producing energy. In 2016, our operational projects produced enough renewables to cover 57 percent of the energy we used from global utilities. That same year, we signed a record number of new contracts for wind and solar developments that were still under construction. Those projects began operating in 2017—and that additional output of renewable energy was enough to cover more than 100 percent of what we used during the whole year.</p><br/><p>We say that we “matched” our energy usage because it’s not yet possible to “power” a company of our scale by 100 percent renewable energy. It’s true that for every kilowatt-hour of energy we consume, we add a matching kilowatt-hour of renewable energy to a power grid somewhere. But that renewable energy may be produced in a different place, or at a different time, from where we’re running our data centers and offices. What’s important to us is that we are adding new clean energy sources to the electrical system, and that we’re buying that renewable energy in the same amount as what we’re consuming, globally and on an annual basis.</p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="Google's data center in Eemshaven, The Netherlands." src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/DC-NE-APW-092417-758-1-Edit.max-1000x1000.jpg"/><figcaption class="article-image__caption "><div class="rich-text">Google's data center in Eemshaven, The Netherlands.</div></figcaption></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p><b>Looking ahead</b></p><p>We’re building <a href="https://www.blog.google/topics/inside-google/new-and-expanding-locations-across-america/">new data centers and offices</a>, and as demand for Google products grows, so does our electricity load. We need to be constantly adding renewables to our portfolio to keep up. So we’ll keep signing contracts to buy more renewable energy. And in those regions where we can’t yet buy renewables, we’ll keep working on ways to help open the market. We also think every energy buyer—individuals and businesses alike—should be able to choose clean energy. We’re working with groups like the <a href="http://rebuyers.org/">Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance</a> and <a href="http://resource-platform.eu/">Re-Source Platform</a> to facilitate greater access to renewably-sourced energy.</p><br/><p>This program has always been a first step for us, but it is an important milestone in our race to a carbon-free future. We do want to get to a point where renewables and other carbon-free energy sources actually power our operations every hour of every day. It will take a combination of technology, policy and new deal structures to get there, but we're excited for the challenge. We can’t wait to get back to work.</p></div></div></body></html><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~4/qSAf0eBHA2k" height="1" width="1" alt=""/>Wed, 04 Apr 2018 13:00:00 -0000Wed, 04 Apr 2018 13:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogBloomberg: Apple considering future iPhone models with ‘hover’ gestures and curved screens

This new show will open up a new window into Claude Monet’s world through the cities and buildings that brought his masterpieces to life. <br/></p></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>And to mark the opening of the physical exhibition in London, you can now explore a selection of these works from the National Gallery, and see a stirring retrospective of Monet’s paintings from 17 more museums around the world, online on <a href="https://artsandculture.google.com/project/monetwashere">Google Arts & Culture</a>.</p></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>Written by curators from the National Gallery, the online exhibition will feature new original stories about Monet, with little-known details of his travels through <a href="https://artsandculture.google.com/exhibit/nAKSAVTnk8VMJA">London</a>, <a href="https://artsandculture.google.com/exhibit/1QKiju_s8_mlKw">Paris</a>, <a href="https://artsandculture.google.com/exhibit/lALijhmKqfavLg">Rouen</a> and <a href="https://artsandculture.google.com/exhibit/VwIiwOmSAhkOLA">Venice</a>. For example, records show that Monet loved beautiful cities, appreciated architecture, and had a surprisingly great affinity for fog. This can be seen in much of his work, such as where he depicted the view of the <a href="https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/charing-cross-bridge-the-thames/pAEEvlo_73chNw">Charing Cross Bridge</a> from his suite in the Savoy Hotel in London.<br/></p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><figure class="article-image--full article-module "><img alt="london" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/London_Story_Screenshot.max-1000x1000.png"/></figure></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>You can also immerse yourself in new, ultra high-resolution imagery of many of Monet’s masterpieces, such as <a href="https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/the-water-lily-pond/nQExbyttj8z58A">The Water Lily Pond</a>and <a href="https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/the-thames-below-westminster/IQEhkeOJmxv3qQ">The Thames Below Westminster.</a> This perspective lets you zoom up close to the works and view every subtle brushstroke, then step back in the digital space to see how these bursts of color create a complete view of the cityscapes that inspired him.</p></div></div><div class="block-video"><div class="article-module article-video "><figure><a class="h-c-video h-c-video--marquee" data-glue-modal-disabled-on-mobile="true" data-glue-modal-trigger="uni-modal-QxE5dVP3pFk-" href="https://youtube.com/watch?v=QxE5dVP3pFk"><img alt="Dive into Monet's artworks in high resolution with Google Arts & Culture" src="//img.youtube.com/vi/QxE5dVP3pFk/maxresdefault.jpg"/><svg class="h-c-video__play h-c-icon h-c-icon--color-white" role="img"><use xlink:href="#mi-youtube-icon"></use></svg></a></figure></div><div class="h-c-modal--video" data-glue-modal="uni-modal-QxE5dVP3pFk-" data-glue-modal-close-label="Close Dialog"><a class="glue-yt-video" data-glue-yt-video-autoplay="true" data-glue-yt-video-height="99%" data-glue-yt-video-vid="QxE5dVP3pFk" data-glue-yt-video-width="100%" href="https://youtube.com/watch?v=QxE5dVP3pFk" ng-cloak=""></a></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>And with <a href="https://g.co/earth/monetwashere">Google Earth’s Voyager,</a> both in-person patrons of the National Gallery and virtual visitors to the site can journey across Europe, following in Monet’s footsteps via his paintings. Educator coaching has been shown to be effective in subjects like reading and math, but the Dynamic Learning Project is one of the first nationwide programs to apply this approach to the impactful use of technology across subjects. We checked in with one of the 50 schools participating in the program to see how things are going.</i></p><br/><p>When Hillsdale Middle School principal Jacob Launder learned about the <a href="https://edu.google.com/giving/dynamic-learning-project/?modal_active=none">Dynamic Learning Project</a>, he jumped at the opportunity to transform how his teachers use technology in the classroom.</p><br/><p>Principal Launder had already invested in Hillsdale’s classroom tech and had a community of educators who wanted to build their skills, but many of his teachers lacked the confidence to really make a change in their classrooms. Luckily, he had the perfect person in mind to become a coach and lead this transformation: Ann Mason, a 30-year veteran history teacher in the Cajon Valley School District.</p><br/><p>Thanks to her participation in the Dynamic Learning Project, Ann has extensive access to tech-coaching experts, custom resources and tools to guide her support for teachers, and a community of fellow coaches to share best practices.</p><br/><p>“The Dynamic Learning Project presented the perfect avenue to support change,” Ann says. “It recognizes that every teacher is innovating at a different level, and the new coaching model allows me to meet that teacher at their level.”</p><br/><p>At the beginning of each eight-week coaching cycle, Ann meets with teachers across the school to understand their needs and how she can best support them. As the teachers implement new technology in their lessons, Ann observes their progress and provides regular feedback so they can continue to improve.</p><br/><p>Less than a year later, Ann’s in-person, relevant, and consistent technology coaching has helped Hillsdale instructors build confidence in using technology to prepare students. For example, science teacher Carol Strampfer wanted a better way to organize her seventh graders’ written and digital projects so she could track their progress throughout the year. Working closely with Ann, she helped her students use Google Slides to build digital notebooks featuring images of assignments, photos of labs, and more.</p><br/><p>“I had wanted to implement this type of system for quite some time, and being part of the Dynamic Learning Project provided the push I needed as well as the support,” Carol says. “Ann helped me work out the minor glitches and supported me in incorporating my own ideas.”</p><br/><p>For Ann, the most rewarding moments take place inside the classroom, when she’s helping a teacher introduce a new activity they’ve planned together. “If there’s a tech glitch or a student asks a question that the teacher can’t answer, I jump in to help them move past the bump in the lesson and on to success,” she explains. “I've had numerous teachers tell me they might have given up if I wasn't in the room with them.”</p><br/><p>“The Dynamic Learning Project has given me the courage to be more adventurous in my approach to teaching,” says Elizabeth Cordle, who teaches eighth-grade science. “I have the opportunity to explore new technologies in a safe, supportive way.”</p><br/><p>Ultimately, the goal of the program is to help students engage with learning, and Principal Launder has seen how the Dynamic Learning Project has been transformative for the Hillsdale community. “The positive impact on teacher creativity and problem-solving can be seen by the dynamic products our students are creating in their classes,” he says. “They’re being provided the opportunity to work collaboratively with their peers on engaging and creative projects.”</p><br/><p>These early results affirm that in order to truly unlock the technology’s potential impact in the classroom, teachers must feel supported and confident while learning new tools. As their students turn to them for assistance, answers, and encouragement, Hillsdale teachers now have their own coach to help them thrive.</p><p></p><p>To stay updated about the Dynamic Learning Project, sign up for <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfWUWD_W4wDyuATXAnWg4hOrI0EfcpKFiDVjRfN00bB5tRfTQ/viewform">updates</a> from Digital Promise.</p></div></div></body></html><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~4/mYW1GxwGXQ0" height="1" width="1" alt=""/>Tue, 03 Apr 2018 16:00:00 -0000Tue, 03 Apr 2018 16:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogExpanding our cloud network for a faster, more reliable experience between Australia and Southeast Asiahttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/7Ubk6kdXrkY/<html><head></head><body><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>Earlier this year, we announced that we are <a href="https://blog.google/topics/google-cloud/expanding-our-global-infrastructure-new-regions-and-subsea-cables/">expanding our global infrastructure</a> with new regions and subsea cables, advancing our ability to connect the world and serve our Cloud customers with the world’s largest network.</p><p>Today, we’re excited to announce our investment in the Japan-Guam-Australia (JGA) Cable System. </p><p>This new addition to the Google submarine network family, combined with investments in the <a href="https://blog.google/topics/google-cloud/google-invests-indigo-undersea-cable-improve-cloud-infrastructure-southeast-asia/">Indigo</a>, <a href="https://www.blog.google/topics/google-cloud/expanding-our-global-infrastructure-new-regions-and-subsea-cables/">HK-G</a> and <a href="http://www.submarinenetworks.com/systems/intra-asia/sjc/sjc-cable-system">SJC subsea cables,</a>will give GCP users access to scalable, diverse capacity on the lowest latency routes via a constellation of cables forming a ring between the key markets of Hong Kong, Australia and Singapore. Our investment in these cables builds on our other APAC cable systems, namely <a href="http://googlepress.blogspot.com/2010/04/unity-cable-system-completed-boosts.html">Unity</a>, <a href="https://plus.google.com/u/0/+UrsH%C3%B6lzle/posts/haJzDXnp9Z4">Faster</a> and <a href="https://cloudplatform.googleblog.com/2016/10/new-undersea-cable-expands-capacity-for-Google-APAC-customers-and-users.html">PLCN</a>, interconnecting the United States with Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.</p><p>Taken together, these cable investments provide improved connectivity to GCP’s five cloud regions across Asia and Australia (with <a href="https://cloud.google.com/about/locations/">more on the way),</a>so that companies using GCP can serve their customers no matter where they are.</p><p>The JGA cable system will have two fiber pairs connecting Japan to Guam, and two fiber pairs connecting Guam to Sydney. This provides deeply scalable capacity to both our users and Google Cloud Platform customers. JGA is being co-built by NEC Corporation and Alcatel Submarine Networks. The JGA-South segment is being developed by a consortium of AARnet, Google, and RTI-C, while the JGA-North segment is a private cable being developed by RTI-C. Together, the segments will stretch 9500 km (or nearly 6000 miles).</p><p>Whether we’re delivering directions to Maps users, videos to YouTube viewers, or GCP services to businesses, we know a fast and reliable infrastructure makes all the difference. That’s why we continue to invest in strategic routes, many of which require crossing oceans. In a nutshell, G Suite companies can now use advanced configurations to help fend off phishing scams. These updates will continue to help businesses block (ph)ishy activity, like if an untrusted sender tries to share encrypted attachments or if someone tries to trick you by sending information from a domain that looks like yours.</p><p>With these protections in place, more than 99.9 percent of Business Email Compromise (BEC) scenarios—when someone impersonates an executive to get sensitive information—are automatically moved to spam or flagged to users as shifty. As my mom sums it up, my family spent 18 years on the road in over a dozen cities, 20 different houses, three elementary schools, two middle schools, two high schools—with one tropical fish and one surprise visit from a python in Monterey, CA. Throughout all these travels—meeting people from all different backgrounds, faiths and ethnicities—the highlight was always the excitement of going to a new school. School remains a fixture in my life all these years later.</p><br/><p>I’m still a road warrior, traveling across America’s highways and byways for work. On these trips, I see firsthand the growing gap between children living in poverty and those who come from more comfortable circumstances. I meet students who live in remote or rural areas and endure long bus rides to and from school—in some places up to 90 minutes each way. In these areas, like so many others across the country, a lot of students don’t have access to connectivity or devices at home, but they often have schoolwork that requires it. All of this I observe through the lens of technology and its potential to improve lives. Not only does tech enable me to stay connected while I’m on the go, but we live during a time where even astronauts can have Wi-Fi on their space stations. Why couldn’t our students have access to it on their bus rides home?</p><br/><p>So in 2016, in partnership with local education leaders in Caldwell County, NC (near our Lenoir Data Center), and some Googler volunteers, we helped install Wi-Fi on 11 school buses in the district. We also worked with the Education Foundation of Caldwell County to make sure there were educators who could accompany students on these Wi-Fi-equipped buses to provide support and help out with assignments. Because bridging the “digital divide” isn’t just about providing access and devices—it’s also about using that technology effectively.</p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><div class="article-module h-c-page"><div class="h-c-grid"><figure class="article-image--large h-c-grid__col h-c-grid__col--6 h-c-grid__col--offset-3 "><img alt="Lilyn Hester speaks at Rolling Study Hall pilot launch in 2016" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/IMG_0041_SSTOKb5.max-1000x1000.JPG"/><figcaption class="article-image__caption "><div class="rich-text">Lilyn Hester speaking at the Rolling Study Hall pilot launch in 2016</div></figcaption></figure></div></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>The effects were immediate—almost too immediate for some bus drivers who were shocked (and a little confused) when their commutes became so quiet. Students were engaged. They were learning. And after a few months, there were more real results: School officials saw students do better in school. It was working.</p><br/><p>After the success of the pilot, we brought it to another school district—Berkeley County, SC—targeting Lowcountry communities near St. Stephen and Alvin, areas where many students don’t have access at home. We worked with the College of Charleston to do research on the impact of this program and say that after one year, students were significantly more likely to be digitally literate and 80 percent of teacher participants said they were more likely to bring digital lessons into their classroom activities. They also saw homework completion go up, discipline rates go down, and a dramatic increase in overall student engagement.</p><br/>Because of promising data like this, we’re expanding <a href="https://edu.google.com/giving/rolling-study-halls/?modal_active=none">Rolling Study Halls</a> across the country, starting today in Deer Trail School District in Colorado. As a part of our <a href="https://grow.google/">Grow with Google</a> initiative, Rolling Study Halls will help students across the country access the tools and digital skills they’ll need to be prepared for tomorrow’s workforce.</div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>We’re working with community leaders to outfit buses in 16 additional school districts in partnership with school networking nonprofit <a href="http://www.cosn.org/">CoSN</a> and broadband expert <a href="http://www.kajeet.net/home">Kajeet</a>. Together we hope to maximize access to learning time outside of school hours, with a goal of reclaiming more than 1.5 million hours for thousands of students by the end of this school year. School districts will be able determine policies to limit access to schoolwork only. Students will also have the chance to work collaboratively—alongside an onboard educator—to complete their assignments.</p></div></div><div class="block-video"><div class="article-module article-video "><figure><a class="h-c-video h-c-video--marquee" data-glue-modal-disabled-on-mobile="true" data-glue-modal-trigger="uni-modal-SfDQ2oH2ZlM-" href="https://youtube.com/watch?v=SfDQ2oH2ZlM"><img alt="Introducing Rolling Study Halls" src="//img.youtube.com/vi/SfDQ2oH2ZlM/maxresdefault.jpg"/><svg class="h-c-video__play h-c-icon h-c-icon--color-white" role="img"><use xlink:href="#mi-youtube-icon"></use></svg></a></figure></div><div class="h-c-modal--video" data-glue-modal="uni-modal-SfDQ2oH2ZlM-" data-glue-modal-close-label="Close Dialog"><a class="glue-yt-video" data-glue-yt-video-autoplay="true" data-glue-yt-video-height="99%" data-glue-yt-video-vid="SfDQ2oH2ZlM" data-glue-yt-video-width="100%" href="https://youtube.com/watch?v=SfDQ2oH2ZlM" ng-cloak=""></a></div></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>When we first started this program, I wanted to open up opportunities for students in need, and knock down barriers—like lack of access to internet at home—that stood in their way. There are people who are all tonkotsu all the time, and others who swear by tsukemen. And then there’s machine learning, which—based on a recent case study out of Japan—might be the biggest ramen aficionado of them all.</p><br/>Recently, data scientist Kenji Doi used machine learning models and <a href="https://cloud.google.com/automl/">AutoML Vision</a> to classify bowls of ramen and identify the exact shop each bowl is made at, out of 41 ramen shops, with 95 percent accuracy. Sounds crazy (also delicious), especially when you see what these bowls look like:</div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><figure class="article-image--full article-module "><img alt="Ramen bowls made at three different Ramen Jiro shops." src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/Screen_Shot_2018-03-12_at_10.21.11_PM.max-1000x1000.png"/><figcaption class="article-image__caption h-c-page"><div class="rich-text">Ramen bowls made at three different Ramen Jiro shops</div></figcaption></figure></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>With 41 locations around Tokyo, <a href="http://www.ramentokyo.com/2007/06/ramen-jiro.html">Ramen Jiro</a> is one of the most popular restaurant franchises in Japan, because of its generous portions of toppings, noodles and soup served at low prices. They serve the same basic menu at each shop, and as you can see above, it's almost impossible for a human (especially if you're new to Ramen Jiro) to tell what shop each bowl is made at.</p><br/><p>But Kenji thought deep learning could discern the minute details that make one shop’s bowl of ramen different from the next. He had already built a machine learning model to classify ramen, but wanted to see if AutoML Vision could do it more efficiently.</p><br/><p>AutoML Vision creates customized ML models automatically—to identify animals in the wild, or recognize types of products to improve an online store, or in this case classify ramen. You don’t have to be a data scientist to know how to use it—all you need to do is upload well-labeled images and then click a button. In Kenji’s case, he compiled a set of 48,000 photos of bowls of soup from Ramen Jiro locations, along with labels for each shop, and uploaded them to AutoML Vision. The model took about 24 hours to train, all automatically (although a less accurate, “basic” mode had a model ready in just 18 minutes). The results were impressive: Kenji’s model got <b>94.5 percent</b><b>accuracy</b> on predicting the shop just from the photos.</p></div></div><div class="block-image_full_width"><figure class="article-image--full article-module "><img alt="Confusion matrix of Ramen Jiro shop classifier by AutoML Vision" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/gweb-uniblog-publish-prod/images/pasted_image_0_gAx0PHK.max-1000x1000.png"/><figcaption class="article-image__caption h-c-page"><div class="rich-text"><p><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confusion_matrix">Confusion matrix</a> of Ramen Jiro shop classifier by AutoML Vision (Advanced mode). Row = actual shop, column = predicted shop. You can see AutoML Vision incorrectly identified the restaurant location in only a couple of instances for each test case.</p></div></figcaption></figure></div><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>AutoML Vision is designed for people without ML expertise, but it also speeds things up dramatically for experts. Building a model for ramen classification from scratch would be a time-consuming process requiring multiple steps—labeling, hyperparameter tuning, multiple attempts with different neural net architectures, and even failed training runs—and experience as a data scientist. As Kenji puts it, “With AutoML Vision, a data scientist wouldn’t need to spend a long time training and tuning a model to achieve the best results. This means businesses could scale their AI work even with a limited number of data scientists." We wrote about another recent example of AutoML Vision at work in this <a href="https://cloud.google.com/blog/big-data/2018/03/automl-vision-in-action-from-ramen-to-branded-goods">Big Data blog post</a>, which also has more technical details on Kenji’s model.</p><br/><p>As for how AutoML detects the differences in ramen, it’s certainly not from the taste. Kenji’s first hypothesis was that the model was looking at the color or shape of the bowl or table—but that seems unlikely, since the model was highly accurate even when each shop used the same bowl and table design. Kenji’s new theory is that the model is accurate enough to distinguish very subtle differences between cuts of the meat, or the way toppings are served. He plans on continuing to experiment with AutoML to see if his theories are true. Sounds like a project that might involve more than a few bowls of ramen. Slurp on.</p></div></div></body></html><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~4/RdqToaKYQus" height="1" width="1" alt=""/>Mon, 02 Apr 2018 15:00:00 -0000Mon, 02 Apr 2018 15:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogHarness your Chromebook’s super(charging) powershttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/Yjb5hjpwD68/<html><head></head><body><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>Chromebooks are known and loved for their long battery life, but alas, sometimes you can lose your charger. All throughout the week, we were excited to see our partners enable digital signage solutions across a range of capabilities, from traditional AV displays to dynamic data-driven signage leveraging Windows 10 […]Fri, 30 Mar 2018 16:00:17 +0000Windows BlogTip off: how we’re using predictive analytics during the Final Fourhttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/EmqvD3Vt9GI/<html><head></head><body><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>When we <a href="https://www.blog.google/topics/google-cloud/ncaa-teams-google-cloud/">teamed up with the NCAA</a> last December, we were thrilled to help them use cloud technology to analyze more than 80 years’ worth of statistical game and competition data. But we also wanted to challenge ourselves to do something a little different in the process—and hopefully delight basketball fans while we were at it.</p><p>That’s how we came to embark on a months-long experiment to apply our own technologies to the NCAA’s treasure trove of data. We assembled a team of technicians, data scientists, and basketball enthusiasts (we call them The Wolfpack) who built a data processing workflow using Google Cloud Platform technologies like BigQuery and Cloud Datalab. Our goal wasn't to predict winners or losers, but to build models that look at influential factors on team performance—after all, it’s not whether you win or lose but how you play the game. (For the nitty gritty technical details, read <a href="https://cloud.google.com/blog/big-data/2018/03/architecting-live-ncaa-predictions-from-archives-to-insights">this post</a> on our Big Data blog.)</p><p>By analyzing NCAA data through our workflow, we were able to uncover all sorts of interesting facts—everything from who blocks more shots per minute (<a href="https://cloud.withgoogle.com/ncaa/articles/juniors-block-shots-snackables">for the record: juniors</a>) to whether teams with a certain type of animal mascot cause more March Madness upsets (<a href="https://cloud.withgoogle.com/ncaa/articles/cat-mascots-upsets-snackables">hint: meow</a>). But we wondered if there was more we could do. Could we use data analytics and machine learning to anticipate what might happen during a live game—for example, the number of three-pointers a team might attempt in the second half?</p><p>This weekend, we’ll attempt to do exactly that during the Final Four in San Antonio—and we’ll be sharing our predictions in real-time TV ads you can see during halftime. Here's how it will work.</p><p>During the Final Four, our Google Cloud team (yes, The Wolfpack included) will be on site in San Antonio, closely following the games. We’ll use our workflow to analyze our observations from the first half of each game against NCAA historical data to hone in on a stat-based prediction for the second half that we think is highly probable.</p><p>As halftime starts, the real work begins. We’ll have only minutes to turn our prediction into a TV spot. Our creative team will take the prediction generated by our team of data scientists and data analysts and create the ad right there in the Alamodome, using a real-time rendering system built by <a href="http://cloneless.com/">Cloneless</a> and <a href="http://www.eleveninc.com/">Eleven Inc</a>. (Fun fact: Cloneless’ rendering system is also built on Google Cloud Platform.)</p><p>Before the end of halftime, we’ll hand off our newly-created TV ad to CBS and Turner for airing on TBS right before the beginning of the second half. This is likely the first time a company has used its own real-time predictive analytics to create ads during a live televised sporting event—wish us luck!</p><p>One of the exciting things about running an experiment like this in real time is we don’t know for sure what will happen. In this way, it’ll be a little like what it takes to play a game of basketball—thinking on your feet, reacting quickly to new data, and working together as a team. Which, if you think about it, is also true for businesses.</p><p>Although this story is about March Madness, we hope it’ll be inspiring well beyond the basketball court. There’s so much to learn from applying cloud technology to data—and that’s true whether you’re an enterprise organization, a nonprofit, or even a sports team.</p><p>To learn more, you can <a href="https://cloud.withgoogle.com/ncaa/">check out our site</a> or <a href="https://cloud.google.com/blog/big-data/2018/03/architecting-live-ncaa-predictions-from-archives-to-insights">read our post</a> on the Big Data blog. And if you’re curious to see what happens, tune in to the Final Four on Saturday and Monday to see our predictions as they air. We’ll report back once the tournament is over and let you know what happened—and what we learned. Game on!</p></div></div></body></html><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~4/EmqvD3Vt9GI" height="1" width="1" alt=""/>Fri, 30 Mar 2018 16:00:00 -0000Fri, 30 Mar 2018 16:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogAnnouncing Google Cloud Security Talks during RSA Conference 2018http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/sU8gpZH8gLI/<html><head></head><body><div class="block-paragraph"><div class="rich-text"><p>In light of the many security incidents we can read about in the press, security continues to be a formidable challenge for many businesses.
