In 2012, Apple released a tool called Apple Configurator that was dedicated to preparing iOS devices for mass deployment. It allowed you to configure up to thirty devices at a time (with a massive USB hub).

What’s a computer?

In 1981, Xerox released a workstation called “Xerox Star.” It was the first commercial device to be what we consider a computer these days, with a bitmapped display, a graphical user interface, a mouse, and access to e-mail. More than 30 years later, Apple is now working on a new device, codenamed Star. With an interesting model name N84, it could be the first Mac with an ARM processor, or the first iOS notebook…or something completely different.

Macs have been using Intel processors since 2006 and Apple mobile devices have been using Apple-designed processors since 2010. It was recently reported that Apple was going to move Macs to their own processors by 2020.

https://9to5mac.com/2018/05/25/review-razer-core-x-egpu-mac-macbook-pro-best-external-graphics-video/
Fri, 25 May 2018 20:41:48 +0000

Earlier this week Razer, best known for its PC Laptops and gaming-related peripherals, introduced a new eGPU solution called the Razer Core X. Razer already produces an eGPU called the Razer Core V2, but the Core X is a budget-friendly eGPU box that’s being marketed at both Mac and PC users.

Compared to the Core V2, the Core X is a more straight-forward solution, eschewing niceties like USB, Ethernet, and RGB lighting in favor of a less expensive, more corporate-looking external Thunderbolt 3 graphics solution.

Is the Razer Core X a good solution for Mac users in search of an eGPU? How does it stack up to the current crop of Mac-compatible external graphics boxes on the market? Watch our hands-on video walkthrough for the details. more…

Fri, 25 May 2018 20:41:48 +00009to5MacThe High Five: Sip sip, hooray!http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/OsIQ8CS_XBk/

A High Five on the 25th day of the 5th month feels like it should mean something, but it doesn’t. Much like most of the internet. What does mean something is this beautiful long weekend we’ve got ahead of us, so, without further ado: I bring you this week’s top five search trends, with data from the Google News Lab.

Wine not?

Today is National Wine Day, so watch for your dinner companions to have too many sips of “frose” and turn in early. The denizens of DC, Kansas, and New York were the most keen to know when National Wine Day was taking place. When comparing "red," "rosé" and "white" wine over the last 30 days, red wine is searched nearly twice as much as white, with average interest at 68 percent compared to peak spikes the weekend of May 12-13. Fittingly, interest in rosé is sitting pretty, right in between.

Marking Memorial Day

Red, white, and blue too: This Monday is Memorial Day, so people across the country are looking up tips and tricks for their patriotic celebrations. Top three questions this week on Memorial day were 1) “What was Memorial Day originally called?” 2) “Is today Memorial Day?” And 3) ”When did Memorial Day become a holiday?” Number 2 is my favorite.

Voted off the tie-land

The tribe has spoken … A tribe of reality TV contest candidates and also lots of people who still watch this amazingly long-running show. (Oh how it SURVIVES!) This week’s “Survivor” finale came down to a tie for the first time in the show’s 36-season history and long-standing show fanatics were deep in their feelings about it. Queries like “Who won Survivor 2018 Ghost Island?” and “Survivor fan favorite 2018” spiked over 2,500 percent (!), proving that there are whole worlds out there I know nothing about.

Drawing sides on straws

It’s 2018, so naturally people are taking sides on straws. McDonald’s is under pressure to scrap drinking straws for environmental reasons. Critics claim straws suck for the environment; they’re also super fun to use to drink things. Search interest in “McDonald’s straw” spiked by 230 percent at one point, surpassing search interest in “McDonald’s McFlurry.” While the top two most searched questions this week relating to McDonalds were about straws, the third one, comfortingly, was: “When does McDonald’s breakfast end?”

A verdict in 280 characters

A Texas police officer, a New York comedy writer and a Nashville surgeon walk into a courtroom … And the three are among a group that brought a lawsuit against President Trump for blocking them on Twitter. A federal judge ruled Wednesday that Trump’s blocking users on Twitter violates the First Amendment. Searchers turned to Google to ask: “Who are the plaintiffs in the Trump Twitter lawsuit?” and “Who has Trump blocked on Twitter?”

Fri, 25 May 2018 20:23:00 -0000Fri, 25 May 2018 20:23:00 -0000The Official Google Blog9to5Rewards: Win Apple’s (RED) iPhone 8 + August Home Smart Lock bundle [Giveaway]

Fri, 25 May 2018 19:08:25 +00009to5MacWe are many and one: Googlers mark AAPI Heritage Monthhttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/iuHBfdPFa8Q/

Tiffany’s mother was born in Hong Kong. Her father was born in Vietnam. She is proud to be Chinese, Asian, and American.

Aerica’s mother is Japanese from Kyoto, Japan and her father is Black, from College Station, TX. She identifies as Black and Japanese.

Together, we are the chairs of the Asian Google Network (AGN), whose mission is to support the diverse and multicultural Asian community at Google and beyond. Founded in 2007, AGN is open to all Googlers and provides an annual mentorship program, opportunities for civic and community engagement; leadership development; and curriculum to advance racial justice for all.

We celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month every year in service to that mission. And for the 40th anniversary of AAPI Heritage Month, it was important to us to convey the diversity of the Asian experience in America. For example, Asians at Google trace their roots to more than 20 countries, are multiracial, multiethnic, and speak dozens of languages. And when Asian ethnicities are disaggregated, the data shows that there are wide chasms in access to education, income, and representation. That means that issues that impact AAPIs are broad as well.

As part of this year’s AAPI celebrations, we created an internal curriculum for Googlers on Asian narratives called “We Are Many and One: Gathering Asian Narratives,” where participants share stories and find both common themes and differences within the Asian American Pacific Islander community at Google. Across the country, AGN chapters also put on events for their local communities, such as the exhibit organized by AGN Ann Arbor, which uses timelines, Supreme Court cases, poetry, and the stories of local Googlers to tell the history of Angel Island, the entry point for many Asian immigrants coming to the United States.

AGN Ann Arbor members observing the Angel Island Exhibit

To recognize the AAPI community outside of Google, we partnered with Google Expeditions to feature tours of “Hokule'a's Worldwide Voyage” and “Kamehameha: Unification of the Hawaiian Islands.” YouTube created a playlist of AAPI artists. Fri, 25 May 2018 14:47:15 +0000

There’s been some amusement as a certain well-known ‘adult entertainment’ site announced the launch of its own VPN service.

Smutty jokes aside, there’s never been a more important time to use a VPN. Less than $100 will now buy a bad guy the equipment they need to carry out a man-in-the-middle attack – where they spoof a public WiFi hotspot and intercept the traffic. Some of these devices are even small enough to be disguised as a power plug, meaning they could be left in a coffee shop happily collecting data to be later used at leisure.

And the loss of net neutrality raises the prospect of ISPs offering a two-speed Internet, or even blocking sites altogether. Most are adamant that they’d never do so, but then they were equally vocal about wanting to end net neutrality, which makes no sense unless they planned to take advantage of the change …

Thu, 24 May 2018 15:01:45 +0000On MSFTMore tools for homeschoolershttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/hmopeVDcyGc/

Editor’s note: Our goal at Google is to make technology that works for everyone. Last year we made Classroom available to more students and teachers, including homeschoolers, and today we’re also updating the eligibility guidelines for G Suite for Education so homeschool co-ops in the U.S. can collaborate using G Suite for Education. We’ve worked closely with several organizations to make this happen, including National Black Home Educators and Home School Legal Defense Association. Today’s guest author Darren Jones shares more about why this matters.

For decades, homeschooling families have met in groups called “co-ops” to offer new teaching opportunities for their children. Back in the 1980s, when I was being homeschooled, I was in one of these co-ops, learning geography, algebra and drama together with friends who were also learning at home. Homeschooling wasn’t as common then as it is now, and we were spread out geographically. We’d meet for a lesson once a week, but it wasn’t really possible to interact with the teacher once we got home. There was certainly no opportunity for us students to collaborate with our co-op teachers online!

As homeschooling has grown, families still get together to learn. In my work for Home School Legal Defense Association, I advise these groups every day, and I can see how new, advancing technology could benefit students. Through technology, homeschool co-op teachers can set and change assignments on the fly, students can work together even if geographically separated, and everyone has a common format for collaboration. It’s because of this potential that I’ve been working closely with Google this year to make sure that homeschool co-ops have the same access as other schools to G Suite for Education.

G Suite for Education is a free suite of productivity and collaboration tools—including Gmail, Google Classroom, Google Docs and Drive, Google Calendar, and more—that lets students and teachers interact seamlessly and securely across devices. It’s really exciting that homeschools will soon be able to use all of these tools to work better together, encourage creativity and practice critical thinking—whether they’re working one-on-one with an individual student or with a whole homeschool class.

Over the past few months a few homeschool co-ops have been piloting these tools, including the Partnership Homeschool Educational Association of Minnesota. Jen Crom, one of their teachers, started homeschooling in 2005 and each academic year has 110-130 students through grade 12. She’s found that using G Suite has helped her save precious time and helped her students produce a better final product on their assignments—while at the same time, exposing them to lifelong skills that they’ll need for their future.

For teachers, it’s just so easy to use. Apple’s stock Camera app is great for the average person, but intentionally hides away advanced options like manual controls for ISO and shutter speed. Also, on iPhone X, the Camera app doesn’t quite fit in with lots of unused blank space and a hard-to-reach top toolbar.

Obscura 2 is a worthy contender in the pro camera app market, launching today in the App Store ($4.99). The main screen incorporates all controls into a bottom third of the screen, easily accessible when using the iPhone one-handed. There are dedicated buttons for common actions of changing exposure and focus, and a simple ‘control wheel’ dial houses the rest of the controls. Obscura includes a rich set of filters, gestures and a beautifully integrated photo library browser.

Though self-portraits may be how most people first encounter Kahlo, the woman they portray is revered for much more than her art. The complexity of her thinking on feminism and politics, her body and her country, remains fresh. The third year of Google and the NBA’s partnership on the #NBACareerCrossover program, which pairs players with companies for an “externship”—a full day spent educating and immersing players in fields outside of basketball. The program has offered options ranging from real estate to media, and this month it was Google’s turn to present tech as a valid next career choice when players decide to hang up their jerseys. In the lineup this year were Luke Kornet from the New York Knicks, Kevin Hardy from the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Roger Moute A Bidias from the Raptors 905, former NBA player Gani Lawal, and former WNBA player Stacey Lovelace.

The day kicked off with a talk from our People Operations team, where the players got a sense of the various paths to Google and how to prepare for their next career move. We also held a resume workshop, where everyone was able to ask specific questions and discuss how skills developed on the court translate to careers off of it. During this particular session, Stacey shared that in the WNBA, the pairing of self-reflection and colleagues' assessment are crucial: “You have to learn how to be comfortable in your work, [but] it’s OK to ask for feedback.” Kevin agreed, pointing out the importance of knowing yourself and being honest, whether as a player, when writing a resume or in your day-to-day life: “I always felt that I was self-aware—I reflect on the different things I’m doing, and I try not to paint something fictitious.”

But the day wasn’t all workshops and talks. The players met with our YouTube team, played an interactive game using Daydream, toured the campus, ate lunch at a Google cafe, and rode in Waymo’s self-driving cars. When asked what lessons they had learned from the day, Gani threw this at us: “In the real world, failure isn’t ‘failure,’ it’s something that didn’t work. To succeed in real life, you have to step outside your zone and push forward.” Luke spoke to other methods of leadership off the court: “Service is the best way to be a leader.”

We also learned that everyone has a story to tell, and sometimes that story isn’t what you expect. Roger, explaining why he wanted to visit Google, told us: “I studied industrial engineering, and use Google for everything, so I want to know how Google works—how things go on behind the scenes.” We also discussed how there isn’t one clear path to working at Google. Jason, one of the Googler presenters, is a former NFL player. Other Googlers shared their diverse backgrounds, including a former Marine, school teacher, journalist, diplomat, and several first-generation college graduates. The stories from the players and presenters demonstrated that no matter your beginnings, you can define the outcome.

NBA at Google_Googleplex.jpg

NBA at Google_atWaymo.jpg

NBA at Google_Gingerbread.jpg

NBA at Google_Daydream.jpg

<use xlink:href="#mi-keyboard-arrow-right"></use>

<use xlink:href="#mi-keyboard-arrow-right"></use>

We had a blast meeting Gani, Kevin, Luke, Roger and Stacey, and hope there was a future Googler in the mix. Today we’re announcing grants to 31 universities and nonprofit organizations across 16 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa to provide professional development for CS educators. These grants are part of Grow with Google’s commitment to train and equip teachers with the right skills to prepare the future workforce.

As digital technologies continue to evolve at an increasingly faster rate, it’s predicted that 21 million new jobs will be created in the next 10 to 15 years. CS has a crucial role in equipping students with the technical skills to embrace these new opportunities and career choices. CS education includes design, data, algorithms and the study of computer systems, while also promoting crucial skills such as collaboration, problem-solving and creativity. We believe every student should have the opportunity to learn CS; with that comes the responsibility of preparing teachers to deliver a CS curriculum with competence and confidence.

The grants announced today will enable research institutions, universities, and educational nonprofits to develop professional development (PD) programs specifically for CS teachers—those already teaching the subject and those completely new to the field. Through these PD programs, teachers will be able to grow their skills and knowledge to provide an exemplary educational experience for their students. Over the coming year, the 31 awardees in EMEA will provide a combined 500 hours of professional learning opportunities for 10,000 primary, secondary and pre-service teachers.

The funding announced today will support professional development for teachers in countries like Italy, where APS Programma il Futuro will provide professional development courses to approximately 150 primary and secondary school teachers. The grants will also allow awardees to respond to the increasing demand for CS PD in pre-service teacher education. In Ireland, for example, The University of Limerick will develop a new course to empower 50 pre-service teachers with CS skills and hands-on classroom resources.

We’re thrilled to congratulate these 2018 grant awardees across Europe, Middle East and Africa. Prepared teachers are key to helping students embrace the CS opportunities of tomorrow, and we look forward to seeing how these grantees will advance CS education for the new global economy.

Wed, 23 May 2018 16:40:00 -0000Wed, 23 May 2018 16:40:00 -0000The Official Google BlogSee what the world is searching for with the updated Google Trendshttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/-ZZTHw-sbjs/

Google Trends has become a key part of journalistic storytelling, giving reporters everywhere an insight into search trends across the world. You should have the original spreadsheet (Ex: “Sales Revenue”) and the one you want to add information into (Ex: “Product Inventory”).

Step 2: Grab two things from the original sheet.

You need two pieces of information from the original spreadsheet in order to move the data: the spreadsheet URL and the range of cells where you want to pull the data from. In this example, our original spreadsheet’s name is “Sales Revenue.”

First, highlight and copy the full spreadsheet URL from the original spreadsheet (Note: you can also use the spreadsheet “key,” which is a code hidden inside the URL between the “d/” and “/edit.” It looks like a jumbled mix of letters and numbers.).

Next, before you switch to the new spreadsheet, make sure to note the range of cells where you want to pull the data from in the original spreadsheet. For example, A:1 to C:10.

Step 3: Use a Google Sheets function to port your data over.

Now we use the IMPORTRANGE function. First, click into the new spreadsheet where you’d like to add data into. In this example, it’s named “Product Inventory.” Insert columns or rows into the spreadsheet where you want to put data.

Next, type =IMPORTRANGE in the cell (you can choose to use all caps or not, it doesn’t matter.). The function will then ask you for three things:

The URL of the original spreadsheet (or the spreadsheet key, both options work.)

The name of the specific tab in your spreadsheet that you’re pulling information out of

The range of cells for data you need

It will look similar to this:

=IMPORTRANGE(“https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RNez4bhTMt_evAdHrFOBHeBgk1l5HAWVTb43EKpYHR8/edit#gid=0","Sales Revenue by Quarter!A1:C10”)

It’s important to note that you have to use the specific name of the tab in the sheet in the formula. So for this example, the name of the original spreadsheet housing multiple datasets is called “Sales Revenue,” but the name of the specific tab with our data in it is called “Sales Revenue by Quarter.” We want to use the specific tab’s name to avoid our function breaking in the future when new sheets or tabs are created.

Oh and another trick: don’t forget to add the exclamation point (!) before the data range. That’s important, too.

Step 4: Import your data.

After you’ve added your IMPORTRANGE formula, you can click enter.

If it’s the first time you’ve imported data from that particular spreadsheet, a pop-up might appear. Don’t worry! This security check makes sure you’re okay with granting any collaborators on this spreadsheet access to data that lives in another spreadsheet. It will ask you to “Allow access” when you see the #REF in your cell. Go ahead and click yes.

Voilà! Your data will appear in the new spreadsheet.

Focus on work that’s important
Google Sheets has more than 400 functions you can use to help speed up work. Unfortunately, we continue to receive complaints from business owners about calls they receive claiming to be from Google. Often these calls are actually third-party companies who are trying to take advantage of them. Sometimes these scammers claim to be able to improve a business’ Google Search rankings, other times they charge money for services that Google offers for free. Understandably, these scams are frustrating for business owners and for us at Google.

Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission brought action against Point Break Media, LLC (and related entities and individuals) for misleading small businesses with threats to remove their listings from Google Search and Maps and demands that they pay for unwanted search optimization services.

In the past, we’ve taken various actions to try to stop these predatory practices. And today we’re taking additional steps to address the bad actors that are targeting businesses.

Specifically, as of today:

We’re taking legal action against Kydia Inc. d/b/a BeyondMenu, Point Break Media, LLC (and affiliated entities), and Supreme Marketing Group, Inc. d/b/a Small Business Solutions. We hope this sends the message to other scammers out there that we will not hesitate to take legal action against them.

We’ve developed new automated and manual techniques to better identify Google accounts tied to scam efforts. We’ve updated our policies, so that when we identify Google accounts tied to scams we’re better able to take action—whether that’s removing the accounts from our platforms entirely or limiting their capabilities.

We’ve created a new tool that lets business owners report scammy practices and policy violations, and provide the specific information needed for us to take action against these third parties.

We’ve started providing resources and education to local small business organizations and the partners we work with through our Get Your Business Online program, so they can empower their communities to identify, prevent, and report scams. To request a Google speaker to help educate your communities on how to avoid fraud and scams, complete and submit this form.

We’re launching the Google My Business Partners program. The program will give business owners a directory of trusted partners to choose from when they need help managing their listings.

We’ll continue to take action against these scams and the companies behind them by evolving our products and systems to identify bad actors, making policy changes, making law enforcement referrals and taking legal action when possible. But in addition to our efforts, here are a few things you can do immediately to protect yourself:

Verify whether someone is actually reaching out from Google.Often these fraudulent callers will use language like, “Google specialist” or “calling about or on behalf of Google.” To verify whether a caller is actually calling from Google, you can ask that they send you an email from a Google email account to further verify their identity. Anyone who works for Google should be able to send you an email from an @google.com email account. The Google Safety Center outlines additional tips.

Claim your business for free using Google My Business.Once you’ve claimed your business and actively manage your business information, you’re much less likely to be targeted by scammers. Here’s how to claim your business.

Know what’s possible and not possible when it comes to search engine marketing. There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google. Any company that claims to be able to do so may be running a scam.

If you get an unwanted robocall, hang up the phone.Do not press any key, even if the voice recording prompts you to in order to speak with a live person or to be taken off the call list.

Report unwanted callers toGoogle, and also the FTC or theFCC.

Register your personal number with the National Do Not Call Registry (1-888-382-1222).

Small businesses are a crucial part of our economy, and fraud shouldn’t get in the way of helping them grow. Given the rapid digital transformation taking place in the world today, we want to make sure that everyone has the skills to both make the most of the opportunities and navigate the challenges that this presents.

Since we started Grow with Google in 2015, more than 214,000 people have found a new job or started a business thanks to the training offered. Making sure that our efforts are reaching the most disadvantaged requires working in partnership with organizations like OpenClassrooms and Inco, who are at the frontline of supporting those most at risk of missing out. That’s why we announced today at the Tech for Good summit in Paris that we’re committing $100 million over the next five years through Google.org to nonprofit organizations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa that are focused on skills and economic opportunity.

We particularly want to help organizations that focus on using technology and innovation to train people with new skills, connect job seekers with good jobs, and support workers in low-wage employment. According to the European Commission, 44 percent of working-age European adults don’t have basic digital skills. And in the Middle East and North Africa, only 38 percent of youth believe their education gives them the skills they need to enter the workforce. There is clearly a lot of work to do to make the opportunities of the digital economy are available to all, and the nonprofit sector—along with our partners in government, city councils, universities, and private-sector businesses—will play a vital role.

We’re always inspired by what people do when they have access to technology. And with our nonprofit partners, we’re doing everything we can to make sure technology brings opportunity to everyone.

Wed, 23 May 2018 14:00:00 -0000Wed, 23 May 2018 14:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogNew York Times: Using AI to host better conversationshttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/me8a_Eb8Mdw/

The internet is supposed to be a place that fosters community and conversation—but all too often, it's a place where people are subjected to hateful speech and online harassment. More than 40 percent of Americans have personally experienced some degree of online harassment, and in 2017, 27 percent reported that they wouldn’t post a comment after witnessing harassment posted online. Meanwhile, the sheer volume of toxic commentary online has been enough to force prominent news organizations to shut down comments sections on their articles entirely.

The New York Times, however, refuses to let the trolls win. They’ve invested significant resources in community moderation to ensure that their readers have a productive place to discuss all sides of an issue and connect freely over the topics that matter most, without being subjected to abuse.

But those high standards are hard to scale. Careful moderation takes time, and in 2016 The New York Times was only able to enable comments on about 10 percent of articles. Eager to find a solution that would let them support comments across a greater swath of articles, they looked to machine learning to help.

They turned to Perspective, a free tool developed by Jigsaw and Google that uses machine learning to make it easier to host good conversations online. Perspective finds patterns in data to spot abusive language or online harassment, and it scores comments based on the perceived impact they might have on a conversation. Publishers can use that information to give real-time feedback to commenters and help human moderators sort comments more quickly. And that means news organizations and content publishers can grow their comment sections instead of turning them off, and can provide their readers with a better, more engaging community forum.

Using Perspective, The New York Times was able to triple the number of articles on which they offer comments, and now have comments enabled for all top stories on their homepage.

We hope more organizations consider using Perspective to help host better conversations, expand dialogue on important issues, and keep our digital town squares open. Climate uses Chrome Browser to support its workforce as it develops digital tools for sustainable farming.

The Climate Corporation’s mission is to enable all of the world’s farmers to sustainably increase productivity with digital tools. Our Climate FieldView app—which can be downloaded on mobile devices or accessed through an Internet browser—helps more than 100,000 people across the United States, Canada and Brazil to make data-driven decisions about their agricultural practice.

Although our entire team works toward the same goal, our workflows and styles can vary greatly. As a Senior Systems Engineer, part of my job is making sure our employees have the tools they need to collaborate and be productive. We have teams on both coasts of the U.S. and across the Midwest as well as Brazil, where many of the farms we serve are located. Chrome Browser brings us together. It’s our go-to tool for finding the applications we need to do our jobs and get things done, whether we’re in the office or in the field. (Literally.)

From the very beginning we embraced Chrome Browser as one of our essential business tools. It’s the gateway to the 100 or so apps we rely on daily. We combine it with Okta to provide single sign-on access to the apps, and it integrates perfectly with Chrome using the Okta extension. Instead of having to remember dozens of app logins and passwords, employees simply log in once at the Chrome Browser home screen. It’s a seamless way to find the tools we need and start working quickly every day.

For our employees who travel a lot, or switch between devices when at home or at the office, the Chrome Browser operates as their “home base” for resources like bookmarks. No matter where our employees log in, or what device they use, their bookmarks stay synced. Our IT team uses the Chrome management console to push out bookmarks and extensions everyone needs—a big time savings compared to manually setting up bookmarks on each device.

<img alt="The Climate Corporation uses Chrome Browser to support its workforce as it develops digital tools for sustainable farming. So we use G Suite to stay connected. Remote workers on the go can dial into Hangouts quickly to share the latest information, and we have more than 170 meeting rooms powered by Hangouts Meet, which runs on Chrome Browser, giving us a secure and reliable way to work across geographies.

Chrome Browser also saves time for our software teams thanks to its feature-rich development tools. Our customers use our website to access critical information, so it’s important to us all the website features work smoothly. Our software engineers use the developer tools in Chrome Browser to diagnose bugs, analyze code in real time, and fix any problems that arise. They especially like being able to switch back and forth among profiles with a few clicks, since they have several accounts with admin rights for test environments.

Chrome Browser is so easy to work with we can get creative with time-saving tools for employees. For example, we built a custom “go links” system for Chrome Browser, so people don’t have to type in URLs for websites they visit often. For example, to easily get to our internal IT support site, all employees have to do is type go/it in Chrome Browser’s address bar. The less time spent navigating to the resources they need, the more time they’re able to dedicate to getting the right information in front of our customers.

As IT people, we worry most about security, while employees tend to worry about speed—how fast they can access information. With Chrome Browser, we’re covered on both fronts. Auto-updates are a huge benefit for us, because we know the browser always has the latest security protections, without the need for us to manually manage patches. When it comes to speed for our users, Chrome Browser loads fast, so scientists and engineers don’t run into delays when seeking important data. This means they can quickly connect with their colleagues to get projects over the finish line.

Helping farmers get the most out of every acre and gather knowledge so future yields are even more plentiful is a mission that benefits everyone—not just the farming community. Chrome Browser helps us make that possible.

Tue, 22 May 2018 16:00:00 -0000Tue, 22 May 2018 16:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogAndroid P: More power for enterpriseshttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/y0BQdvneebA/

We recently unveiled the beta version of Android P, which adds more intelligence and simplicity to your mobile experience. Google Tasks supports this feature today, with support in other Google apps coming soon.

Switch from your personal Google account to a work profile from within the same application.

Also new in Android P is support for devices shared by multiple users. Now, shift workers who hand off a device at the end of their day can simply sign out, and the new team member can login and use the device right away.

More flexibility in kiosk mode

Businesses use Android devices as payment terminals, digital signs, informational kiosks, and in other creative ways to support their customers. This can be done by locking an app to the screen through kiosk mode.

Before, IT admins were restricted to locking only one app to a device. Now in Android P, admins can lock multiple apps and quickly switch between them with a dedicated launcher. A restaurant could take your order from a menu, and then switch over to a payment terminal app to complete the transaction.

Support multiple apps in kiosk mode.

This mode also lets enterprises limit access to device options, such as mobile connectivity or the settings menu, while still allowing users to get notifications and interact with a defined set of apps.

Any Android app can be used in kiosk mode, and developers don’t have to build their own custom launchers anymore to switch between apps. Administrators have full flexibility in customizing the user interface with the ability to hide status bar icons, the power menu and navigation buttons, as well as disable notifications.

Key security enhancements

Android P also introduces a number of features that address enterprise security needs:

The ability for IT administrators to require different PINs and timeout rules for the personal and work profiles.

Additional policies that can prevent data sharing across work and personal profiles.

New APIs that work with keys and certificates to securely identify devices accessing corporate resources.

While these are some of the key highlights, there are many other security-focused APIs and features that will benefit those using Android as a company-issued device or personal device with the work profile. View more details on the full set of security enhancements at the Android developers site.

Take it for a test drive

Thanks to the work of Project Treble, an effort to make OS upgrades easier for our partners, the Android P Beta is available for testing on several devices.

IT admins who want to experience P can install the beta on Google Pixel, Sony Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, Vivo X21, OnePlus 6, and Essential PH‑1.

Tue, 22 May 2018 13:10:00 -0000Tue, 22 May 2018 13:10:00 -0000The Official Google BlogMicrosoft Remote Assist and Microsoft Layout available today as limited-time free preview
