This brings me to my key point — that map making, map data collection and keeping maps up-to-date, is an expensive and unending task […]

Apple will have to pour in hundreds of millions of dollars every year to collect, parse and integrate maps, transit and traffic data. Further, having Apple Maps cars equipped with expensive LiDAR, 360 cameras gear and drive hundreds of thousands of miles globally will still take Apple years to perfect the maps at a global scale […]

In summary, it could be a little too late for Apple to build maps content from the ground-up.

For a company which boasts of saying no a thousand times for every time it says yes, Apple Maps always seemed like a strange project to green-light, but I think there were a couple of reasons for it …

Kuo says that the 6.5-inch OLED iPhone model should be priced around $1000 like the current iPhone X, and will feature dual SIM capabilities. The 6.1-inch LCD iPhone X style device should retail for around $700.

Perhaps, most excitingly, Kuo says the new iPhones will come in a plethora of colors. The 6.5-inch phone will be offered in black, white and a (new!) gold. The entry-level 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will apparently debut in “grey, white, blue, red and orange”.

I clamped it to the back of my desk, then adjusted the angle arm so it was just above and in front of my monitor. That way, it lit the desk, didn’t cast any light onto my monitor, and effectively took up no space.

It took some time to find a suitable light, and a fair amount of messing around with clamp positions and angles until I had what I wanted. Now BenQ has created a product that achieves the same result in a really neat fashion: the ScreenBar …

Tue, 03 Jul 2018 23:50:24 +00009to5MacEnsuring your security and privacy within Gmailhttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/Tn41Gslou_o/

We make it possible for applications from other developers to integrate with Gmail—like email clients, trip planners and customer relationship management (CRM) systems—so that you have options around how you access and use your email. We continuously work to vet developers and their apps that integrate with Gmail before we open them for general access, and we give both enterprise admins and individual consumers transparency and control over how their data is used.

You can visit the Security Checkup to review what permissions you have granted to non-Google apps, and revoke them if you would like. For G Suite users, admins can control which non-Google apps can access their users’ data through whitelisting.

Keeping your data secure is our top priority, so we want to provide you with details about our vetting process and user controls for both enterprise and consumer accounts:

Giving consumers choice and protecting them from malicious or deceptive apps

A vibrant ecosystem of non-Google apps gives you choice and helps you get the most out of your email. However, before a published, non-Google app can access your Gmail messages, it goes through a multi-step review process that includes automated and manual review of the developer, assessment of the app’s privacy policy and homepage to ensure it is a legitimate app, and in-app testing to ensure the app works as it says it does.

In order to pass our review process, non-Google apps must meet two key requirements:

Accurately represent themselves: Apps should not misrepresent their identity and must be clear about how they are using your data. Apps cannot pose as one thing and do another, and must have clear and prominent privacy disclosures.

Only request relevant data: Apps should ask only for the data they need for their specific function—nothing more—and be clear about how they are using it.

We review non-Google applications to make sure they continue to meet our policies, and suspend them when we are aware they do not.

You control your data

Transparency and control have always been core data privacy principles, and we're constantly working to ensure these principles are reflected in our products.

Before a non-Google app is able to access your data, we show a permissions screen that clearly shows the types of data the app can access and how it can use that data.

We strongly encourage you to review the permissions screen before granting access to any non-Google application.

In addition, we’ve long had data controls that you can use at any time to manage your information. For example, the Security Checkup shows all non-Google apps that have access to your data and flags potentially risky apps so you can revoke any previously-granted permissions that you are no longer comfortable with. You can also view and control permissions within myaccount.google.com under “Apps with account access.”

Providing tools for G Suite admins

G Suite admins can control the scopes of data users are able to grant non-Google apps access to by whitelisting connected OAuth apps. This ensures that G Suite users can give access only to non-Google OAuth apps that have been vetted and are trusted by their organization.

Providing industry-leading security and intelligence in Gmail

Gmail has world-class safety features, such as protections that allow us to prevent more than 99.9% of spam and phishing emails from reaching your inbox. In order to deliver these features, we conduct automatic processing of emails. This is standard practice across the industry, and also allows us to give you intelligent features like Smart Reply that help you be more productive.

We do not process email content to serve ads, and we are not compensated by developers for API access. Gmail’s primary business model is to sell our paid email service to organizations as a part of G Suite. We do show ads in consumer Gmail, but those ads are not based on the content of your emails. You can adjust your ads settings at any time.

The practice of automatic processing has caused some to speculate mistakenly that Google “reads” your emails. To be absolutely clear: no one at Google reads your Gmail, except in very specific cases where you ask us to and give consent, or where we need to for security purposes, such as investigating a bug or abuse.

The work of privacy and security is never done, and we’re always looking for ways to better protect our users. For example, we’ve recently introduced more transparency into your Google Account, greater control over your ads settings, and added new OAuth protections to guard against malicious apps. We continuously make announcements about how we’re improving our protections—keep up to date with the latest on the Safety & Security section of our blog, and visit privacy.google.com for more information about our privacy and security commitments.

Tue, 03 Jul 2018 22:00:00 -0000Tue, 03 Jul 2018 22:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogiOS 12: How to use the animated Activity app stickers in Messages

And more businesses, bothlarge andsmall, are bringing Chrome OS to their workplaces to take advantage of its speed, simplicity, and security. If you’re considering a Chromebox or Chromebook deployment for your organization, you might be wondering how to get started.

Your best bet is to start with the Google Chrome Device Deployment guide. Once you’ve given that a look, here are a few insider tips to help you roll out, configure, and manage Chrome OS to save time and money.

1. Pre-configure your device management options ahead of time.

Before deployment, you’ll want to fully understand what your workforce and business areas need so you can pre-configure devices and employee accounts using Chrome Enterprise with the right tools to be productive on Chrome OS.

Chrome Enterprise gives you a lot of flexibility in your configuration options. You can stick with our defaults, or fine tune more than 200 different policies in the Chrome management console. And if you work with an enterprise mobility management (EMM) partner, you can use their configuration tools separately or in conjunction with the Admin Console. Policies are automatically applied when your users first log in to to an enrolled Chromebook or Chromebox, so this pre-deployment effort gets them up and running quickly.

2. Take time to review how your users and organizations are currently managed.

Whether you work for a large enterprise or a small business, chances are you’ll need to grant access to company data or apps to specific teams or job functions. Before deploying Chrome Enterprise, we recommend carefully reviewing organizational units and their access levels with management. Outlining this information upfront can speed up deployment because you can pre-configure settings for organizational units instead of managing settings for each individual user.

Pro-tip: Already using Microsoft Active Directory (AD)? You can integrate it with Chrome Enterprise devices and groups to save time.

3. Run the Chrome OS Beta channel on a few devices.

Chrome OS offers three software channels: Dev, Beta and Stable. While we recommend rolling out Chrome OS devices on the most current Stable channel to employees, you might also consider having a few Chromebooks or Chromeboxes on hand running on the Beta channel. This lets you preview platform changes in flight and test any impact that changes might have on the apps and websites your workforce relies on. Bonus: it can also help your support team anticipate questions employees may have about new features once changes migrate from the Beta to Stable channels. Check out this support page to learn more on how to switch between software channels.

4. Consider using managed Google Play to boost productivity with mobile apps.

Managed Google Play on Chrome OS can be a useful tool for employees. By providing access to Android apps on supported devices, users get access to a wider range of software to help them be productive—like Microsoft office, Evernote and many others.

You don’t need to grant access to the full Google Play Store—you can whitelist specific Android apps in the Chrome management console. You can also configure Chrome OS devices to automatically install certain apps if that’s a requirement. And it may make sense to create an intake process like a Google Form to easily capture app requests so you can quickly review.

5. Evaluate if you are equipping your workforce with the right technology

Employees use their devices in different ways, often with different needs. Some employees want a travel device. Others need access to data while they’re in the field. Still others want a device that allows them to collaborate and be productive without disruptions. We designed Chromebooks to be cloud-native devices with functionality that meets a broad range of needs. All Chrome devices, for example, have front-facing cameras and are now standardized on USB-C, so you don’t have to carry multiple chargers. Storage can happen in the cloud, so you don’t have to worry about device memory. Since then, we received lots of great feedback, including many who asked, “How do I start?” They’re looking for step-by-step help in applying these context-based access practices in their particular organizations, so we’ve created a series about some of our best practices at Google.

Know your people. Know your devices.

The first step to moving from a privileged corporate network (usually with a VPN at its core) to a zero-trust network is to know your people and know your devices. When the network no longer provides the trust required to access critical company information, we instead turn to the information we have about individual employees and their devices. Without a reliable, up-to-date set of data about the people and their machines, we can’t make good decisions about access.

On the employee side, at Google, this required restructuring our job role hierarchy. We had to reshape our array of job classifications so we could more accurately capture what people were actually doing day to day, and what sort of access they required by role. We had to answer some tough but very logical questions like:

Who needs to see internal bug information?

Who needs access to source code?

Who needs to track customer relationships?

Sorting all this out required changes to our existing jobs, sometimes to simplify and combine existing roles that looked similar to each other. Elsewhere, we needed to change classification to make sure we captured differences between groups of employees who might be performing different jobs but happen to share a job role in our tracking system.

Alongside that, we had to make sure we had accurate, timely information about all the devices Googlers were using. We do not want to extend trust to a person, only to have them use an infected device and inadvertently share the information they have access to with an attacker. The devices are just as important as the people in this access scheme.

Keep a single inventory of record

When we started, Google had numerous systems to track and understand our device inventory—Asset Management tools, DHCP servers, Wireless Access logs, tech support systems, and more—but none of them were truly comprehensive. We ended up building a meta-inventory service that ingests data from these other systems, brought it all together, and correlated it into a single inventory. Without this step, we would have had both conflicting records and multiple instances of one device across different systems, without the ability to tell when we might accidentally have more than one copy.

Creating this new master inventory service took a large investment of time and effort, but has given us a much more unified look at our multitude of devices, as well as what they are doing. Now that we’ve got this picture more filled in, we can make trust evaluations based on the state of a device, looking at its installed software, patch level, and other characteristics.

Next steps

Here are a few suggested next steps based on our own experience and best practices.

Understand what apps you use internally

Decide on, or refine security policies for accessing these services

Know who your people are and what they do

Decide who is allowed to get to what

Put in place Identity-based access controls (such as Identity-Aware Proxy)

More to come

There’s much more to the process of building your trust model around people and devices as opposed to networks, and I will cover further steps in future posts. If you have looked at Google’s BeyondCorp model—or others advocating zero-trust networks—and think that you’d like to build something similar, take the time to build a solid understanding of what jobs people are doing and the health of their devices. These two pieces form a critical foundation for context-aware access control.
In the coming weeks I’ll be providing more information on how to deploy context-based access in your organization, and have more news to come at Next ‘18. That was my first introduction to GoogleServe, our annual month-long volunteer program, which offers many different ways to give back. My colleagues and I have sorted food at a local homeless shelter, helped NGOs improve their outreach using Google for Nonprofits tech solutions, and helped set up the San Francisco AIDS Foundation’s LifeCycle race. In my seven years at Google, I never missed a GoogleServe—I even attended a gardening project at Full Circle Farms two weeks after giving birth to my son Jack. I didn’t do much gardening, but was glad to be there alongside my teammates.

Now, the journey has come full circle. I work with Google.org as its Global Project Manager for GoogleServe and in this role, I have a bird’s eye view of all the amazing ways my colleagues are having an impact. To help you understand what these new features and enhancements mean for enterprises, we’ll be publishing regular updates to coincide with the latest Chrome Enterprise beta releases.

To kick things off, here are just a few of the new features available in Chrome Enterprise 68.

Alert users when they visit unencrypted sites.

Security on the web is more important than ever, and we want to do our part to keep businesses and users protected. As we announced in February, Chrome Browser will start to alert users that HTTP sites are “not secure” beginning with Chrome 68. You’ll start to see these alerts in your browser this month, so you may want to consider giving your users a heads up. If you have internal or third-party apps that are still in the process of migrating to HTTPS, and you want to avoid displaying a warning to users, you can also choose to disable this notification on a per-domain basis.

Allow users to sign in through a PIN code anytime

For users who frequently need to log in and out of devices without an accessible keyboard—for example, a retail associate using a tablet—numeric passcodes can be a necessity. Although logging in through numeric PIN has been available on Chrome OS for some time, it was previously only allowable after the first sign-in. With Chrome 68, sign-in through a numeric PIN code is now available at any time. Note that we suggest that you require a minimum of six digits for PINs.

Enable automatic re-enrollment

If managing devices is one of your responsibilities, the occasional loss or theft of a device is inevitable. In the past, if a misplaced device was wiped remotely and then later recovered, a user would need to enter their credentials into that device for it to re-enroll into your domain.

With Chrome 68, managed Chrome OS devices will automatically re-enroll once they connect to a network, eliminating the need for users to enter their credentials to complete the re-enrollment step. This feature will be rolled out incrementally, and will become the default for new customers as well as existing customers who have not changed the default forced re-enrollment setting.

If you choose, you can still require users to enter their credentials to re-enroll recovered devices, and use enrollment permissions to prevent specific users from being able to re-enroll through that process. More information on wiping and enrolling devices can be found on our help center.

To stay in the know, bookmark and visit our Help Center, or sign up to receive new release details as they become available.

Fri, 29 Jun 2018 16:00:00 -0000Fri, 29 Jun 2018 16:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogFour tips for taking delectable food photos with Pixel 2http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/xytPE7BUD-4/

For Samira Kazan—best known to her online followers as @AlphaFoodie—food art was an unexpectedly welcome addition to the equation.

Samira, who holds a Ph.D. in engineering from Oxford, began experimenting with creating beautiful dishes in her free time as a way to explore healthier eating. Since then, she’s taken and shared thousands of photos of her food art creations on her blog and Instagram. She’s also a Pixel 2 user, and has learned a few tips along the way about what works best for her food shots. Below are her top four, in her own words:

1. Document every delicious detail with Portrait Mode

From a single currant to the perfect drop of icing, Portrait Mode makes it possible to capture the finest details of your food concoctions. Try getting close to the subject—this amplifies the background blur effect to create a striking photo.

2. Use Slow Motion to capture mouthwatering videos

Slow Motion shoots a high number of frames per second and you can adjust which parts of the videos to slow down, so a lot less editing is required. I love shooting videos of pouring drinks or chopping fruit—between the high sound quality and slow motion, I can capture enticing food envy footage for Instagram!

3. Shoot in all kinds of lighting

If you’re taking photos outdoors on a sunny day, shoot in the shade so that the photo color is more saturated and less overexposed. In overall low-light settings, the wider aperture can allow more light into the camera, making getting a clear photo a breeze. You often don’t even need to use flash at night.

4. Easily rediscover your best shots

It’s easy to capture amazing smartphone photos with one click, meaning you often have a lot of options to choose from. Pixel 2 has unlimited storage via Google Photos, which is a lifesaver for me as a food blogger. It’s easy for me to search Google Photos to find specific past photos—for example, if I’m looking for photos with bananas, I can find all of the photos I’ve taken that have bananas in it through a quick search.

Thu, 28 Jun 2018 23:45:00 -0000Thu, 28 Jun 2018 23:45:00 -0000The Official Google BlogGoogle Home, the summer camp counselor every family needshttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/ChVQSeHHtPE/

School’s out, summer’s here and kids are spending more time at home. Turns out, my son, Jonathan, is a huge fan of watching light bulbs change colors. All I have to do is say, “Hey Google, turn the lights to purple,” and he’s in awe.

Here are a few tips for how you can use Google Home to keep everyone entertained, stay on top of everything, and squeeze in some family this summer:

Game time: When I was a kid, we gathered around board games. Here’s one recipe to get started, just say: “Hey Google, give me a recipe for no-bake cookies.”

Make reading fun: If your kids are into summer reading, you can buy an audiobook on Google Play. The transition to the U.S. was overwhelming. I wasn’t prepared for the culture shock of being both a first-generation college student and one of very few women in my computer science department. I also wasn’t totally confident that a career in computer science was right for me—I didn’t have access to a computer until my late teens and didn’t have much of an interest in computers overall. It was my father who had suggested I pursue a degree in CS.

Luckily, I quickly established a great bench of mentors at CU Boulder who helped me find my footing. Professor Bobby Schnabel, the department chair at the time, helped me secure a spot in the engineering dorm even though I missed the application deadline. Later, Professor Mike Schwartz changed the course of my life when he invited me to be a summer research assistant on a government funded project. After learning of my plans to move back to India for an arranged marriage after graduation, he shared the story of Arati Prabhakar, an Indian woman who was the first woman to head the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). I decided to stay in Denver and get a job as a software programmer—and 24 years later, I’m a director at Google, leading a team of engineers who work on Google Payments in Boulder, CO.

Bhavna with Scott Green, Site Lead for Google Boulder, during the office’s Holi festival

I was fortunate to have a tremendous support system to guide me and advocate for me during college and the years that followed. But that’s not often the case for other women and minorities looking to break into tech. That’s why I’m so excited to share that today Google is making more than $2 million worth of investments aimed at increasing access to CS & STEM education for aspiring women technologists across the country and students around the globe, starting here in Boulder.

First, Google.org is providing a $1.5 million grant to fund the expansion of the Physics Education Technology (PhET) Interactive Simulations project at CU Boulder as part of Google.org’s $50 million global commitment to help close the education gap in developing countries. PhET is a pioneer in digital STEM education—their interactive science and math simulations have been translated into 90 languages and are used more than 80 million times a year by students around the world. This funding will help PhET redesign their top simulations to make them easier to use on the low-cost phones and tablets for aspiring technologists in countries like Mexico, India, Brazil, and South Africa. Students in these regions need training and inspiration to spark their curiosity and a passion for working in tech. By helping to grow PhET’s reach, we hope to provide that.

Second, Google is providing our 26th Street Boulder office space to the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) to establish their new national headquarters. Originally founded on CU Boulder’s campus, NCWIT is a community of more than 1,100 universities, companies, nonprofits, and government organizations working to increase girls’ and women’s meaningful participation in computing. As part of NCWIT’s move, Google is fully funding the lease for the office space, which will amount to a $1.3 million investment after the full-term lease agreement. Our hope is that this will help eliminate some of NCWIT’s financial costs, allowing them to continue to grow and have a positive impact on young girls and women across the country.

Google has long standing relationships with CU Boulder and NCWIT. We actively recruit from CU Boulder and a number of our employees are graduates of the university. More recently, CU Boulder students took part in the very first pilot of Google’s Machine Learning Crash Course and provided valuable feedback that helped shape the content into the version that was just released publicly. Additionally, since 2013, we’ve provided more than $4 million in funding to NCWIT to support efforts like the Extension Services for Undergraduate Programs and EngageCSEDU. He has also hosted integration workshops for deaf and hearing children, bringing them together through circus techniques. His passion for making the world more accessible led him to co-found Visualfy, an app for deaf people that translates sounds into visual and sensory alerts.

We caught up with Manel in the small Spanish town of Benissanó, where he runs his tech startup:

When and why did you get involved with technology?
I got into tech through my long-time friend and co-founder Angel Albiach. We both ran an association that brings together deaf and hearing people through circus arts. Angel cannot live without tech and slowly he made me fall in love with it and its potential too, so we decided to combine his expertise in tech and my business vision to build a team that drives social impact through tech.

Why did you decide to set up your company in Benissanó?
Benissanó is a small village near Valencia (Spain), with a population of under 2,000 people. I grew up here, playing around one of the best kept medieval castles in Spain, as my grandparents were the housekeepers. It’s an unexpected place to be running a tech startup but I just feel inspired here, it’s quiet, the air is clean and nights are starry; and there’s top talent to hire, who want to make an impact whilst keeping this lifestyle.

How did you come up with the idea for the app?
I had been working with deaf people for more than seven years. One day in a meeting my smartphone vibrated and one deaf person told me someone was calling me. Without looking at the screen I told him it was a text message not a phone call, and explained to him that I use different sounds for different notifications. That was the moment when we decided to create our first app.

What has been your experience with Android & Google Play?
Android’s openness allows us to create features that are just not possible on other mobile platforms, so we can deliver a much better experience for our users. The wide variety of devices with affordable prices, not just on smartphones but also on wearables with Wear OS, helps us reach more people and have a bigger impact.

How has your app business grown since you started?
Within five months of launching the app and without spending a single euro, we had more than 5,000 downloads in 122 countries. For the past three years we have been creating a hardware solution that works with our app to improve the quality of life and home safety for people with hearing loss. Our team of professionals is now 22 people strong; we work hard every day to make the world a more accessible place.

Thu, 28 Jun 2018 17:10:00 -0000Thu, 28 Jun 2018 17:10:00 -0000The Official Google BlogAdding “LGBTQ-friendly” and “Transgender Safe Space” attributes on Google My Businesshttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/f8lNbslAxTA/

There’s little that compares to the feeling of walking into a place and being immediately comfortable—your shoulders loosen, your breathing slows, you physically relax, knowing you can be yourself.
