Tue, 10 Jul 2018 16:11:45 +00009to5MacService NSW empowers customers and reduces costs with Chrome Enterprisehttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/QrpgTVsqS_8/

Editor’s Note:Today’s post is from C-suite duo Colin Jones, CTO, and Ben McMullen, CIO, ofService NSW, an agency that helps residents of New South Wales, Australia, connect online and in person with government services. The agency uses Google Chrome Enterprise, Chromebooks and G Suite to reduce IT administration and costs, and to give employees more work flexibility.

When you replace inefficient technology with easy-to-manage tools, you become inspired to build on your success. That’s what we found after we adopted Chrome OS to run our government customer-service kiosks. Once we saw how easy it was to manage and use our kiosks, we started to look for ways to use Chrome OS more widely. By bringing Chrome Enterprise into our offices as well as our customer storefronts, we found we could reduce IT workload, trim network costs, and most importantly, help our employees work better together.

Our journey started with a goal to improve customer service. At 130 Service NSW locations across New South Wales, people can use self-service kiosks for 1,200 types of transactions, like obtaining driver’s licenses and ordering birth certificates. The kiosks offer a much faster way for people to request these services compared to standing in line. Our customers love using them, and since Service NSW launched in 2013, we’ve completed about 70 million transactions.

Before switching to Chrome OS in 2015, our kiosks ran on a legacy OS that lacked reliable remote service features. When kiosks needed repairs or upgrades, field support agents had to visit offices and spend a couple of hours rebuilding hard drives. This meant that kiosks could be out of service for as long as two days.

Once we purchased 800 Chromebase all-in-one desktop computers, we immediately found Chrome Enterprise reduced our costs, streamlined IT management and increased security. Over a six-month period in 2015, we estimated that Chromebases required only 5 percent of the support hours we were spending on the Microsoft devices previously in use.

Because our kiosks didn’t need as much maintenance and could often be repaired or upgraded remotely, their uptime improved, giving customers more kiosks to use. And with kiosks more readily available for users, Chrome OS is helping us meet our goal of performing 70 percent of all transactions digitally by 2019. As we moved resources to the cloud, we found we no longer needed costly private WAN networks for each service location, only broadband and Wi-Fi. Eliminating private networks is an enormous savings by itself. When you add in the savings on devices and IT management, we’re targeting reducing our operational costs by 46 percent per year.

As a result of our successes with Chrome OS in our service locations, we began replacing legacy desktops and software at our head office locations with Chromebooks and G Suite. We're actively rolling out Chromebooks and G Suite to all of our staff in the next 12 months.

In our offices, we see the same reduction in cost and IT administration that we experienced with the kiosks. We also realized that we can give employees much more flexibility in the ways that they work. Their applications and files are in the cloud, so they can do their jobs from any place that has internet connectivity, instead of being tied to an office. And G Suite helps employees save the time they used to spend traveling to other offices. Collaboration has increased now that our employees can work from any device, anywhere, and be productive.

As a result of all of this, Chrome OS has become our digital platform of choice at Service NSW. We’ve recently purchased 1,200 additional Chrome OS devices to replace the remaining Windows desktops at all of our service locations. We expect that we’ll continue to see the same dramatic savings in costs and admin time that we’ve already experienced with our kiosks—and our employees will get the benefits of working in the cloud.

What started as a journey to make our customer experience faster and easier became a solution that made our employee experience faster and easier as well. As we continue on this journey, we’re expecting to see even more positive effects on costs, IT workload, and worker flexibility in the future.

Tue, 10 Jul 2018 16:00:00 -0000Tue, 10 Jul 2018 16:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogAgileBits dismisses rumor Apple is buying 1Password

We also introduced Display & Video 360 as a key part of Google Marketing Platform. Display & Video 360 is a single, integrated product that helps creative, data and media teams work together to execute end-to-end ad campaigns.

Today, we’re sharing more about Display & Video 360, including how it helps marketers collaborate across teams, gain transparency and control over their investments, and use the latest advances in machine learning and automation to get better results. Read on to learn more, or watch the live stream from our Google Marketing Live event happening later today in San Jose, CA.

About Display & Video 360

Display & Video 360 brings together features from DoubleClick Bid Manager, Campaign Manager, Studio, and Audience Center in a single product.

So what does that mean?

First, Bid Manager will soon become Display & Video 360. This will happen automatically—customers won’t have to take any action and campaigns will continue to run uninterrupted. Second, Display & Video 360 is organized around five integrated modules that work together to simplify the end-to-end campaign process: Campaigns, Audiences, Creatives, Inventory and Insights.

These new modules reflect the fact that Display & Video 360 offers more than just Bid Manager’s programmatic capabilities. It also includes the campaign management, cross-platform measurement, creative and audience capabilities that are currently part of DoubleClick Campaign Manager, Studio and Audience Center. (Don’t worry, these products aren’t going anywhere right away—we’ll gradually transition customers of these products to Display & Video 360 in the future as additional features become available.)

By bringing these solutions together, Display & Video 360 enables marketers to fully manage their reservation, programmatic and programmatic guaranteed campaigns across display, video, TV, audio and other channels, all in one place. And using a single product to manage advertising campaigns and workflows end-to-end offers significant advantages compared to a more piecemeal approach.

Collaboration across teams

We know that getting a successful ad campaign up and running requires media, creative, data and analytics teams to work closely together along the whole journey. In fact, recent data from Google’s Media Lab—the team that manages all of Google's advertising campaigns—shows a 1.5X improvement in campaign performance when creative strategies and design are aligned to media, compared to when creative is built in a silo.1 But today, the typical digital campaign workflow is complex and manual, involving handoffs across multiple people, organizations and products—which makes it really hard to collaborate.

Display & Video 360 changes that. It helps teams share campaign data and insights at each step of the process, so they can work together to plan campaigns, design and manage creative, organize and create audience segments, find and transact inventory, then measure and optimize results.

"Running digital marketing for Major League Baseball is a unique opportunity because we cover all 30 MLB teams and a total of 2500 games each year. Display & Video 360 helps us to achieve the scale we need to meet this demand because it allows our creative, campaign management and analytics teams to collaborate really well. For example, our analytics team can share feedback on creative performance much faster than before, and then this feedback can easily be applied to many campaigns at once."

Barbara McHugh

SVP, Marketing, Major League Baseball

Transparency and control

With Display & Video 360 you can see precisely how your money is being spent and know exactly where your ads are running—across all of your campaigns. Understanding how your marketing is performing in real time gives you more control. You can quickly see what’s working and what’s not, and then make informed decisions to adjust your tactics and improve campaign performance.

Buying media through a single platform like Display & Video 360 also leads to better results—as measured in terms of both reach and efficiency. For example, Nielsen found that marketers who consolidated their traditional reservation deals with their programmatic guaranteed deals in a single buying platform increased their reach of unique consumers by an average of 11 percent—for the same investment in impressions.2 In another recent study, BCG found that programmatic guaranteed deals are 29 percent more efficient for agencies than traditional reservation deals measured in hours spent on deal set-up and management.3

“By consolidating all of our campaigns in Display & Video 360, we can easily control how many consumers we reach and how often we reach them. This means we don’t have to worry about wasted impressions or a bad consumer experience from people seeing our ads too many times. Instead, we can direct that investment to reach more of the people who are likely to fly with us.”

Justyna Valente

Digital Marketing Manager, TAP Portugal

Faster, smarter marketing

According to a recent study of global marketing organizations by Bain & Company, speed in decision making separated the leaders—the top 20 percent of respondents based on revenue and market share growth—from the laggards, who represent the bottom 20 percent. Marketing laggards are 1.7X more likely to be held back by slow decision making4, while marketing leaders are using technology to surface trends and patterns in near-real time so they can deliver more relevant marketing with speed to assist consumers at the right moment.

Display & Video 360 takes advantage of Google’s unique capabilities in machine learning to automate tasks like bidding and optimization, so you can respond to users’ needs faster. Built-in intelligence across the product automatically surfaces insights and recommendations—such as where to shift budget to improve campaign performance—so you can act quickly to achieve your goals.

Tune in to learn more

Display & Video 360 will begin rolling out to all Bid Manager customers in late July. We’re excited to introduce this end-to-end advertising solution as part of Google Marketing Platform, and we’re eager to hear your feedback.

Please join me for the live streamed keynote at Google Marketing Live today at 9:00 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. ET or watch the recording after the event. We’ll explore how this technology works in our products and why it’s key to delivering the helpful and frictionless experiences consumers expect from brands.

Join us live today at 9am PT (12pm ET).

Deliver more relevance with responsive search ads

Consumers today are more curious, more demanding, and they expect to get things done faster because of mobile. As a result, they expect your ads to be helpful and personalized. Doing this isn’t easy, especially at scale. That’s why we’re introducing responsive search ads. Responsive search ads combine your creativity with the power of Google’s machine learning to help you deliver relevant, valuable ads.

Simply provide up to 15 headlines and 4 description lines, and Google will do the rest. By testing different combinations, Google learns which ad creative performs best for any search query. So people searching for the same thing might see different ads based on context.

We know this kind of optimization works: on average, advertisers who use Google’s machine learning to test multiple creative see up to 15 percent more clicks.1

Responsive search ads will start rolling out to advertisers over the next several months.

Maximize relevance and performance on YouTube

People watch over 1 billion hours of video on YouTube every day. And increasingly, they’re tuning in for inspiration and information on purchases large and small. For example, nearly 1 in 2 car buyers say they turn to YouTube for information before their purchase.2 And nearly 1 in 2 millennials go there for food preparation tips before deciding what ingredients to buy.3 That means it’s critical your video ads show at the right moment to the right audience.

Machine learning helps us turn that attention into results on YouTube. In the past, we’ve helped you optimize campaigns for views and impressions. Later this year, we’re rolling out Maximize lift to help you reach people who are most likely to consider your brand after seeing a video ad. This new Smart Bidding strategy is also powered by machine learning. It automatically adjusts bids at auction time to maximize the impact your video ads have on brand perception throughout the consumer journey.

Maximize lift is available now as a beta and will roll out to advertisers globally later this year.

Drive more foot traffic with Local campaigns

Whether they start their research on YouTube or Google, people still make the majority of their purchases in physical stores. In fact, mobile searches for “near me” have grown over 3X in the past two years,4 and almost 80 percent of shoppers will go in store when there’s an item they want immediately.5 For many of you, that means driving foot traffic to your brick-and-mortar locations is critical—especially during key moments in the year, like in-store events or promotions.

Today we’re introducing Local campaigns: a new campaign type designed to drive store visits exclusively. Provide a few simple things—like your business locations and ad creative—and Google automatically optimizes your ads across properties to bring more customers into your store.

Ads_Search.jpg

Ads_Maps.jpg

Ads_PlacePages.jpg

Ads_Display.jpg

Ads_YouTube.jpg

<use xlink:href="#mi-keyboard-arrow-right"></use>

<use xlink:href="#mi-keyboard-arrow-right"></use>

Show your business locations across Google properties and networks

Local campaigns will roll out to advertisers globally over the coming months.

Get the most from your Shopping campaigns

Earlier this year, we rolled out a new Shopping campaign type that optimizes performance based on your goals. These Smart Shopping campaigns help you hit your revenue goals without the need to manually manage and bid to individual products. In the coming months, we’re improving them to optimize across multiple business goals.

Beyond maximize conversion value, you’ll also be able to select store visits or new customers as goals. Machine learning factors in the likelihood that a click will result in any of these outcomes and helps adjust bids accordingly.

Machine learning is also used to optimize where your Shopping ads show—on Google.com, Image Search, YouTube and millions of sites and apps across the web—and which products are featured. It takes into account a wide range of signals, like seasonal demand and pricing. Brands like GittiGidiyor, an eBay company, are using Smart Shopping campaigns to simplify how they manage their ads and deliver better results. Tue, 10 Jul 2018 07:00:54 +00009to5MacAmanotes: a symphony of music and technologyhttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/hibXiWxlAJg/

As part of our series of interviews with people across Asia-Pacific who use the Internet as a tool to connect, create and grow, we spoke with Bình Võ, the co-founder and General Manager of Amanotes, an Asian game developer whose team (pictured) is spreading love for music with their apps. Amanotes’ Magic Tiles app is the top piano game in more than 50 countries. Amanotes participated in the 2017 Indie Game Developer Day in Vietnam, a training program for the best indie game developers in the country

Tell us about yourself and your path to becoming an entrepreneur.

I’ve always loved music. My father taught me how to play the piano when I was six and I picked up the guitar and Vietnamese bamboo flute on my own. I also love technology and that's why I chose it as my major in university. Music and technology are quite different, but they both improve our quality of life. My mission is to combine these two passions and share my love for them with the world with great music game apps.

How did you start Amanotes?

MusicKing, the first music game startup that I founded in 2009, failed. But that experience made me much better prepared for when I and cofounder Cường Nguyễn established Amanotes. We still wanted to focus on our love for music and technology, but we realized that we needed revenue to be viable! So we started out by producing websites for companies in Vietnam. With the income from that work, we funded the creation of Magic Tiles, a game that lets you play different musical instruments like piano, guitar and drums on your mobile phone.

How did you succeed the second time round?

We had some promising early reviews for Magic Tiles, but not many people were downloading it. So we asked Google for help. The Google App Developer Sales team helped us use Firebase and universal app campaigns (UAC) to improve our game and reach. Google Play also advised us how to make the game more appealing and featured us on the Google Play Store.

Thanks to this support, we managed to gain and delight a new global audience of gamers. Magic Tiles became one of the top five most popular music games in the U.S. and even ranked as the single most downloaded game there for a week in 2017. With this international success, we were able to double our team to 50 people in the same year and expand our presence regionally with offices in Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

Magic Tiles 3 has seen great success on the Android Play store.

That’s amazing! What have you done since then?

Our experience with Magic Tiles taught us that a solid marketing strategy is critical. There are a lot of great apps out there, but we never get to know about many of them.

We decided the best use of our experience would be to pass it on to other indie developers, helping them publish and market their music and music game apps. As a publisher, we support indie developers in creating quality music game apps and bringing them to global markets. We were really proud when App Annie recognized our efforts by ranking Amanotes as one of the top five publishers from Southeast Asia for 2017.

Amanotes team members love music and often play together during meetings.

What’s next for your business?

In 2017, we were ranked 20th in terms of the most downloaded apps by App Annie. Our current users are mostly from America and Europe. Our priority is to keep up our momentum in these markets. We’re also planning to do more to engage audiences in China, Japan and South Korea.

We’re working on new apps that will let people enjoy music, teach them how to play it and even help them make a living from it. Our aim is that Amanotes becomes a companion in everyone’s musical journey.

What’s your big dream?

My personal motto, inspired by the late Steve Jobs, is "stay hungry, stay foolish." Our long-term goal is to build a complete music ecosystem, producing excellent apps for music lovers, and enabling other indie developers to do the same.

Tue, 10 Jul 2018 02:00:00 -0000Tue, 10 Jul 2018 02:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogMicrosoft launches cheaper ‘Surface Go’ iPad competitor with a 10-inch display

As an Analytics Advocate for Google, I’ve been on stage around the world to teach best practices and share about our products for the past five years, and during that time, I’ve often been one of only a few, if not the only, woman on stage.

I think there are many reasons that lead to under-representation by women on conference stages. I’ve written about some of my thoughts on the topic here. No one is an expert starting out (if you read my post, you’ll see how much I’ve worked to improve over time!), and it can be intimidating to take that first leap. Mon, 09 Jul 2018 21:03:45 +00009to5MacBuilding a better news experience on YouTube with the GNIhttp://feedproxy.google.com/~r/blogspot/MKuf/~3/AjZKiMJw_EM/

We launched the Google News Initiative (GNI) earlier this year with three goals in mind: to elevate and strengthen quality journalism; evolve business models to drive sustainable growth; and empower news organizations through technological innovation. Since then, we’ve been working through partnerships to support investigative journalism, strengthen fact checking organizations, improve digital news literacy, and continue our collaboration with publishers.

Today, as part of our $300 million commitment towards the GNI goals, we’re announcing a $25 million investment to expand our work supporting the news ecosystem’s long-term success in online video—with a special focus on YouTube.

Supporting journalism with technology that allows online video to thrive

Through several programs, the GNI will help news organizations achieve success in online video. First, the GNI will establish a working group with news organizations from around the world to partner with us develop new online video product features and improve the news experience on YouTube. Second, the GNI/YouTube innovation fund will provide operational and capacity building grants in 20 global markets to support sustainable video operations, enhance production facilities and develop formats optimized for online video. Finally, we’re significantly expanding a team at YouTube focused on supporting news publishers. Based around the world, new team members will be tasked with supporting our partners with training, audience development, day-to-day platform operations, and sophisticated technical integrations.

Making authoritative sources readily accessible

When we announced the Google News Initiative, we also made a commitment to increase the integrity of the information we display during breaking news events. Today we announced several new YouTube features to prominently surface authoritative sources to viewers. To bridge the gap of time it takes to produce high-quality video when news breaks, in the United States, YouTube search will now include links to news article during breaking news cycles. In addition, we're rolling out the "Breaking News" section on YouTube's homepage and the "Top News" shelf in search results, which highlight videos from credible news organizations, to many more countries. And YouTube is expanding viewers’ access to local news—the most trustedsource of news—across different markets in the U.S.

YouTube will also roll out a feature to give viewers more context on issues that have been subject to misinformation. When people search for or watch videos about well-established historical and scientific topics, like the moon landing or the Oklahoma City Bombing, YouTube will link to and show more information and context from trusted sources like Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica.

There is more work to do and we’re looking forward to continuing our cross-industry collaboration in the future. You can go in depth into all of today’s announcements on the YouTube blog. If the phone has not been unlocked within the last hour, iOS will disable the Lightning port so USB accessories cannot communicate with the device. After unlocking, any accessories will stay connected.

USB power chargers are not affected, but some USB accessories that provide power may not charge the device until the device has been unlocked. Apple has detailed in a new support article exactly what this means for users ….

We’ll showcase their passions and also hear about what they do when they step away from their computers. Meet our next app maker—Gregory Veret, a French organic farmer, co-founder and CEO of Xooloo—and check out more #IMakeApps stories on g.co/play/imakeapps.

When he was 29—while leading his tech startup Xooloo—Gregory went back to school to learn agriculture and bought a 65-acre island to start a farm. His passion for helping children grow is consistent throughout his life—both through his app that helps kids become good digital citizens, and his farm that provides food to Paris schools and daycares.

We caught up with Gregory at his farm outside of Paris.

When and why did you get involved with technology?

I got into technology when I was 19. I thought new technologies will dramatically change the way children grow, learn and interact with each other. I created Xooloo to give super powers to children through technology. I chose to be an entrepreneur because I want to make a difference and I genuinely enjoy working with other like-minded people that carry the same sentiment.

How did you get into farming?

I worry about the world that we’ll leave behind for children, and as an extension of what we do at Xooloo to help kids with their digital lives, I also wanted to do something that would have a positive effect on their physical lives. While leading Xooloo, and without telling anyone, I went back to school to study agriculture and bought a farm. In the beginning, I had no clue what I was doing; now every year I grow 100 tons of organic vegetables, mainly potatoes, that feed children in more than 500 schools and daycares in Paris. Xooloo and the farm have both the ambition to bring something positive and different to children, by allowing them to grow, both in their physical and digital lives.

Why did you create the Xooloo apps?

At Xooloo, we believe technology is an opportunity for kids and not a threat. That’s why we've made it our mission to create digital services to help them transform the world. Parents are scared and sometimes clueless when it comes to enabling their kids access to the digital world. Our apps empower children to guide parents in their kids’ digital life, to access new technology freely, and remove their parents’ fears.

What has been your experience with Android and Google Play?

Android’s openness provides great opportunities for our service. We get access to APIs that work across many device models from many OEMs, which enables us to reach many potential customers. On Google Play we can also use whichever business model we like, which is particularly important when working with partners, like mobile operators.

How has your app business grown since you started?

At first it was just my sister and I. Now we’re 13 people and have signed a distribution agreement with Orange, the largest mobile operator in France. We’ve also won several awards, including the “CES Best of Innovation Award” in Las Vegas, which brought a lot of traction for the app; for example, we were invited by the French President Emmanuel Macron to accompany him in his first foreign state visit to show how we’re using technology for good. We’re looking forward to continuing to enable a better future for children.

Mon, 09 Jul 2018 17:36:00 -0000Mon, 09 Jul 2018 17:36:00 -0000The Official Google BlogBest portable Apple Watch chargers for travel

Add in a heavy LTE workload, and that becomes even more apparent.

Adding a wall charger or USB battery pack to your arsenal can help, but you’ll still need to carry an Apple Watch charging puck. People often ask me about the differences between these environments, to which I jokingly reply: “Ask me what’s the same; that’s a shorter answer.”

Prior to working in the insurance industry, I’d been a staff software engineer at Google for seven years. At the time I felt that all the great technology that Google and other tech giants were building could be very valuable for enterprises—even if it required them to rethink their existing assumptions and architectures. And kidding aside, having spent extensive time inside both large enterprise IT and a digital giant, I find that there are more connections and similarities between the two than one might think.

For example, when enterprises migrate their on-premises workloads to the cloud, they start by mapping their existing needs and operational models to those of the cloud providers. During this process, the OCTO team fields lots of questions related to the cloud operating model, and how it differs from their environments—at least at first sight. Some customers may even start to wonder whether the cloud is really a fit for their “traditional” enterprise, and not just for cloud-native startups. Part of our job is to work with IT leaders to connect the dots, and show them why the cloud operating model is exactly what they need for their enterprises.

CIO agenda

Today’s CIOs face an exciting, but also quite challenging time. Digital disruption and rapid technology evolution dramatically change expectations for enterprise IT, causing IT organizations to juggle rapid technology evolution and increasing demands from the business to deliver faster and at a lower cost. Speaking to numerous CIOs, we’ve found that their top agenda items tend to fall into three major buckets:

Security: No CEO wants to be in the news for a data breach or cyber attack. Among all of a CIO’s challenges, these have the potential to not only harm the business, but also to end your career almost immediately, perhaps even with legal implications. Above all, enterprise IT systems must be kept secure.

Uptime: Information technology is only good if it runs. Outages can also get you into news, or at least annoy customers and cause you to miss out on revenue opportunities. No CIO likes to be called in to discuss an outage.

Cost: While security and uptime are the main drivers, IT is still a significant cost factor in most enterprises, sometimes running into the billions of dollars. “Doing more with less” is a common theme with many CIOs as they look to embrace new capabilities while at the same reducing operational expenses.

Cloud’s digital capabilities

Meanwhile, the key capabilities that web-scale companies and cloud providers like Google use to be successful appear different than CIO’s IT priorities, at least on the surface:

Speed: In the digital world it’s all about being fast. You’ve got to be able to launch new products quickly, either to be ahead of the competition or to run another round of experiments to make your product better.

Automation: What makes digital businesses fast at scale is relentless automation. Google deploys billions of container instances every week—you can be assured that none of this is done manually.

Feedback: Digital enterprises are charting new territory. Hence they need to make small steps, obtain feedback, and improve their product based on that feedback. Instead of running large projects with a meticulously defined target state, they start small, and improve from what they learn.

Connecting the dots

On the surface, these two sets of priorities look quite different: security, reliability and cost vs. speed, automation and feedback. However, knowing that cloud providers like Google successfully fend off cyber attacks on a daily basis, that their core services are almost perfectly reliable, and that they’re able to offer their services at a low price point suggests that there’s a connection here.

Security = Cloud speed + automation + feedback

Assuring cyber security is no longer a matter of a well-configured firewall and an intrusion prevention system. Both attack vectors and cyber defense have changed dramatically, making cyber security an integral part of IT operations as opposed to a bolt-on or afterthought. The most easily executed attacks often result from known vulnerabilities in outdated versions of operating systems or software frameworks. A single unpatched machine can leave the door fairly wide open for cyber attackers. Similarly, a piece of software that’s being deployed could expose a security weakness that can be exploited. In these cases, being able to revert back to a prior known state quickly is key to keeping your systems secure.

Automated deployments and upgrades are a critical part of keeping your environment secure because they ensure all system components are at a consistent patch level and software updates can be instantly reverted if need be. Being focused on speed ensures that these actions can be taken without any observable downtime to the user. For example, when the CPU exploits Meltdown and Spectre were identified, Google Cloud patched all its servers without any service disruption.

Lastly, cyber attacks and breaches occur constantly, with attack methods and defenses ending up in a kind of cat-and-mouse game that ups the ante almost every day. Therefore, your cyber defense can’t be merely a matter of planning, but also one of reacting and evolving quickly through feedback.

Uptime = Cloud automation + feedback

Hardware fails. Servers fail; firewalls fail; even failover systems fail—I once observed a significant on-premises outage due to the backup power supply not coming online when the first one failed. That’s why a single server or piece of hardware can rarely deliver the desired uptime. The classic response to failure has been to procure high-quality components and to build in redundancy—but both drive up cost. Instead, constant feedback and automated deployment allow you to deploy additional instances of your software immediately in case of an actual failure. Such systems are resilient—they are designed to deal with failure and absorb it without noticeable end user impact. This approach creates systems that have virtually no user-visible outages. For example, people visit the google.com homepage to see whether their internet connection is working because they’ve never seen that site fail.

Cost = Cloud automation + feedback

IT expenses are largely driven by software license costs, manual labor and hardware. Traditional, inflexible IT environments tend to massively over-provision hardware that remains underutilized and delivers a low return on capital investment. A classic example is redundant hardware, also known as “warm standby.” The downside of that approach is that to increase system availability from somewhere around 98 percent to closer to 99.5 percent, you need to allocate twice the hardware to the application. Essentially, you double your hardware cost for an additional 1.5 percent of uptime—not a great return on investment. By automating deployment, a limited, shared pool of hardware can be used to rapidly deploy the application in case of a failure. Better yet, let your cloud provider manage this spare pool, which brings your standby cost to zero.

Additionally, cloud computing offers a consumption-based model that allows you to only pay for hardware you actually need. Automation allows you to rapidly scale up and down your application infrastructure depending on load, allowing you to optimize your cloud usage and further reduce cost. Feedback and transparency gives an indication of any remaining underutilized hardware that can be decommissioned.

Cloud models meet enterprise goals

Once you dig a little bit deeper, you quickly notice that digital companies and traditional, large enterprises have the same goals for security, availability, and cost. However, digital companies using a cloud model have learned to achieve them using different mechanisms. The good news is that what they’ve learned and built is directly applicable to, and directly benefits, traditional enterprises.

By connecting the dots, enterprise IT leaders realize that as the external world changes, a cloud-oriented operating model is the natural way to achieve the key metrics expected from a CIO and their IT organization these days.

Mon, 09 Jul 2018 16:00:00 -0000Mon, 09 Jul 2018 16:00:00 -0000The Official Google BlogHomePod expected to take 4% of 100 million smart speakers by year’s end

On my 2012 model, it’s bundled with a matte resistive touch screen that requires you to press in on the display to control the unit. As you can probably imagine, the stock unit is extremely clunky and difficult to use. It’s so bad that I wouldn’t purchase a new Toyota without a new capacitive CarPlay unit built in. Thankfully, Toyota recently wised up and decided to adopt CarPlay after holding out for several years.

If you’re like me and stuck with a terrible stock head unit, then a CarPlay-enabled aftermarket radio may be the key to a much better audio, messaging, and navigation experience while on the go. There are caveats associated with having an aftermarket head unit installed, but as my recent experience with the Pioneer MVH-1400NEX shows, the upsides outweigh the potential downsides. more…

We continuously work to vet developers and their apps that integrate with Gmail before we open them for general access, and we give both enterprise admins and individual consumers transparency and control over how their data is used.

You can visit the Security Checkup to review what permissions you have granted to non-Google apps, and revoke them if you would like. However, before a published, non-Google app can access your Gmail messages, it goes through a multi-step review process that includes automated and manual review of the developer, assessment of the app’s privacy policy and homepage to ensure it is a legitimate app, and in-app testing to ensure the app works as it says it does.

In order to pass our review process, non-Google apps must meet two key requirements:

Accurately represent themselves: Apps should not misrepresent their identity and must be clear about how they are using your data. Apps cannot pose as one thing and do another, and must have clear and prominent privacy disclosures.

Only request relevant data: Apps should ask only for the data they need for their specific function—nothing more—and be clear about how they are using it.

We review non-Google applications to make sure they continue to meet our policies, and suspend them when we are aware they do not.

You control your data

Transparency and control have always been core data privacy principles, and we're constantly working to ensure these principles are reflected in our products.

Before a non-Google app is able to access your data, we show a permissions screen that clearly shows the types of data the app can access and how it can use that data.

We strongly encourage you to review the permissions screen before granting access to any non-Google application.

In addition, we’ve long had data controls that you can use at any time to manage your information. In order to deliver these features, we conduct automatic processing of emails. This is standard practice across the industry, and also allows us to give you intelligent features like Smart Reply that help you be more productive.

We do not process email content to serve ads, and we are not compensated by developers for API access. Gmail’s primary business model is to sell our paid email service to organizations as a part of G Suite. We do show ads in consumer Gmail, but those ads are not based on the content of your emails. You can adjust your ads settings at any time.

The practice of automatic processing has caused some to speculate mistakenly that Google “reads” your emails. To be absolutely clear: no one at Google reads your Gmail, except in very specific cases where you ask us to and give consent, or where we need to for security purposes, such as investigating a bug or abuse.

The work of privacy and security is never done, and we’re always looking for ways to better protect our users. For example, we’ve recently introduced more transparency into your Google Account, greater control over your ads settings, and added new OAuth protections to guard against malicious apps. Eight kids with limb differences or who are wheelchair users experimented with voice and vision technology, powered by Google AIY kits, to create body modifications and wheelchair augmentations.

For four years, the nonprofit KIDMob has been doing design workshops with kids who have upper and lower limb differences, but this is the first time they’ve incorporated Google AIY Kits into a workshop. Google AIY Kits let you build intelligent devices that see, speak and understand. They’re for anyone interested in tinkering and exploring creative applications of technology.

The workshop was named “Superhero Boost” to encourage kids to stretch their thinking about what is possible for their prosthetics and wheelchairs. They spent the first half of the week brainstorming around superhero capabilities like morphing, strength, and surprise to generate ideas both assistive and cool that showcased their personalities. Our friends at Autodesk hosted the workshop and had 3D printers firing on all cylinders to support rapid prototyping of ideas.

A team of Google engineers were on hand to help the kids solder and program their ideas for intelligent wearable devices with superpowers. And more businesses, bothlarge andsmall, are bringing Chrome OS to their workplaces to take advantage of its speed, simplicity, and security. If you’re considering a Chromebox or Chromebook deployment for your organization, you might be wondering how to get started.

Your best bet is to start with the Google Chrome Device Deployment guide. Once you’ve given that a look, here are a few insider tips to help you roll out, configure, and manage Chrome OS to save time and money.

1. Pre-configure your device management options ahead of time.

Before deployment, you’ll want to fully understand what your workforce and business areas need so you can pre-configure devices and employee accounts using Chrome Enterprise with the right tools to be productive on Chrome OS.

Chrome Enterprise gives you a lot of flexibility in your configuration options. You can stick with our defaults, or fine tune more than 200 different policies in the Chrome management console. And if you work with an enterprise mobility management (EMM) partner, you can use their configuration tools separately or in conjunction with the Admin Console. Policies are automatically applied when your users first log in to to an enrolled Chromebook or Chromebox, so this pre-deployment effort gets them up and running quickly.

2. Take time to review how your users and organizations are currently managed.

Whether you work for a large enterprise or a small business, chances are you’ll need to grant access to company data or apps to specific teams or job functions. Before deploying Chrome Enterprise, we recommend carefully reviewing organizational units and their access levels with management. Outlining this information upfront can speed up deployment because you can pre-configure settings for organizational units instead of managing settings for each individual user.

Pro-tip: Already using Microsoft Active Directory (AD)? You can integrate it with Chrome Enterprise devices and groups to save time.

3. Run the Chrome OS Beta channel on a few devices.

Chrome OS offers three software channels: Dev, Beta and Stable. While we recommend rolling out Chrome OS devices on the most current Stable channel to employees, you might also consider having a few Chromebooks or Chromeboxes on hand running on the Beta channel. This lets you preview platform changes in flight and test any impact that changes might have on the apps and websites your workforce relies on. Bonus: it can also help your support team anticipate questions employees may have about new features once changes migrate from the Beta to Stable channels. Check out this support page to learn more on how to switch between software channels.

4. Consider using managed Google Play to boost productivity with mobile apps.

Managed Google Play on Chrome OS can be a useful tool for employees. By providing access to Android apps on supported devices, users get access to a wider range of software to help them be productive—like Microsoft office, Evernote and many others.

You don’t need to grant access to the full Google Play Store—you can whitelist specific Android apps in the Chrome management console. You can also configure Chrome OS devices to automatically install certain apps if that’s a requirement. And it may make sense to create an intake process like a Google Form to easily capture app requests so you can quickly review.

5. Evaluate if you are equipping your workforce with the right technology

Employees use their devices in different ways, often with different needs. Some employees want a travel device. Others need access to data while they’re in the field. Still others want a device that allows them to collaborate and be productive without disruptions. We designed Chromebooks to be cloud-native devices with functionality that meets a broad range of needs. All Chrome devices, for example, have front-facing cameras and are now standardized on USB-C, so you don’t have to carry multiple chargers. Storage can happen in the cloud, so you don’t have to worry about device memory.
