<p>One of the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/01/04/magsafe-adpater-12-inch-macbook/">most interesting accessories that came out of the Consumer Electronics Show</a> earlier this year was <strong><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-BreakSafe-Magnetic-Breakaway-MacBooks/dp/B01CQTK6GU?ie=UTF8&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1&keywords=griffin%2520breaksafe&tag=9to5g-20&qid=1461455517">Griffin’s BreakSafe Magnetic USB-C Power Cable</a></strong>. As a 12-inch MacBook owner (<a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/12/08/best-apple-product-2015-op-ed/">and lover</a>), one of the things I’ve missed the most with the machine is the MagSafe connection. Apple introduced the MagSafe technology 10 years ago, but thanks to the switch to a single USB-C connection, it is nowhere to be found on the ultra-slim MacBook.</p>
<p>That’s where Griffin’s BreakSafe comes in the. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-BreakSafe-Magnetic-Breakaway-MacBooks/dp/B01CQTK6GU?ie=UTF8&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1&keywords=griffin%2520breaksafe&tag=9to5g-20&qid=1461455517">Retailing for $39.99</a>, the BreakSafe is a six-foot-long magnetic USB-C cable. The BreakSafe brings the laptop-saving MagSafe technology that Apple users have to love to the 12-inch MacBook. And it does it surprisingly well, but it’s not perfect…</p>

<p>Apple has announced that it is ending support for the original watchOS SDK and original Apple Watch 1.0 apps, which required a phone to even open. From June 1st, Apple will require developers of new Apple Watch apps to use the native SDK, which came with watchOS 2. The requirement was posted on the <a href="https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=04222016a">Apple Developer news page last night</a>.</p>

<p>As it has in the past, Apple held a lottery for WWDC 2016 tickets. The lottery opened on Monday, April 18th, and closed earlier today at 10:00AM PST.</p>
<p>The lottery format puts developers on even ground, lending all a chance to win the right to purchase a $1,599 ticket. Though Apple has stated that it plans on notifying winners of the lottery by Monday, April 25th, some winners have already begun to see their credit cards charged. <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/22/apple-notifying-lottery-winners-of-wwdc-2016-tickets/#more-428492" class="more-link">more…</a></p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/ios-devices/'>iOS Devices</a> Tagged: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/lottery/'>Lottery</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/wwdc/'>WWDC</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/wwdc-2016/'>WWDC 2016</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/wwdc-lottery/'>wwdc lottery</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/428492/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=428492&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=428492&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />Sat, 23 Apr 2016 00:38:42 +00009to5MacOpinion: How Apple could tempt me to upgrade to an iPhone 7

Overall I’ve been happy with the iPhone since its iPhone 5 iteration. It was the device I felt Apple really hit its stride with the hardware. I only upgraded to an iPhone 6 because I wanted a better camera and needed more storage space, but the larger form factor was a serious drawback for me. So what could possibly make me even want to upgrade from my current iPhone 6 to another phone later this year?</p>

<p>Early adopters of <a href="http://www.apple.com/ios/homekit/?cid=wwa-us-kwg-features" target="_blank">Apple’s HomeKit home automation framework </a>tend to notice one thing early on: there’s no real UI beyond Siri. HomeKit helps bridge functionality between various smart home accessories which tend to each have their own connected apps using Siri, but Apple hasn’t released a Home app in the same way it made <a href="http://www.apple.com/ios/health/" target="_blank">Health for HealthKit</a>.</p>
<p>Instead, users rely on a folder full of third-party apps from accessory makers, some of which are better than others, or a highly functional but somewhat pricey third-party app called <a href="https://geo.itunes.apple.com/us/app/home-smart-home-automation/id995994352?mt=8&at=10laZc&ct=925">Home</a> to give HomeKit the UI it needs. Today there’s a new app on the market called <strong><a href="https://geo.itunes.apple.com/us/app/hesperus/id969348892?ign-mpt=uo%253D4&at=10laZc&ct=925&mt=8">Hesperus</a></strong>, which is free to use and has a friendly, customizable interface.</p>

http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/22/review-kef-egg-wireless-digital-music-system/
Fri, 22 Apr 2016 14:35:56 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/kef-egg.jpg?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=563" /></div>
<p>The KEF Egg digital wireless speaker system certainly lives up to its name. The shape of the speakers are a peculiar half-egg shape that make you question whether or not you should take them seriously.</p>
<p>A quick listen, and that question is answered with authority. Despite the peculiar look, these speakers mean business in the sound department.</p>
<p>Not only do these speakers sound good, but they also work well in a variety of different environments and with a variety of sources. KEF Egg is a Bluetooth speaker, a Hi-Fi USB speaker, and features traditional optical input as well. This means that the Egg works well in a bedroom, an office environment, or even in the living room.</p>
<p><a href="http://amzn.to/1WJgxWW">At $499, these speakers are anything but cheap</a>, but if you’re searching for a pair of flexible speakers possessing high-end sound, then the KEF Egg might be worth saving up for. <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/22/review-kef-egg-wireless-digital-music-system/#more-427826" class="more-link">more…</a></p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/reviews/'>Reviews</a> Tagged: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/accessories/'>Accessories</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/bluetooth-speaker/'>Bluetooth Speaker</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/kef/'>KEF</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/mac/'>Mac</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/review/'>review</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/speakers/'>speakers</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/video/'>video</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/427826/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=427826&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=427826&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />Fri, 22 Apr 2016 14:35:56 +00009to5MacGiveaway: SteelSeries Apex M800 Mechanical Keyboard
http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/22/giveaway-steelseries-apex-m800-mechanical-keyboard/
Fri, 22 Apr 2016 14:31:33 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/steelseries-keyboard-giveaway.jpg?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=526" /></div>
<p>Last week, we <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/08/review-steelseries-apex-m800-mechanical-keyboard-led-keys-macros/">reviewed the SteelSeries Apex M800</a> Mechanical Keyboard. The review was largely positive, citing the keyboard’s Mac-centric keycaps, individual LED lights and tactile key switches.</p>

<p>I love the concept of streaming music around the home. There are a lot of great wireless Bluetooth speakers for wireless music on the move, but it’s still unclear what to choose for a static home environment. Apple’s answer is AirPlay, but it has flaws: no multi-room support from iOS devices, limited adoption by speaker manufacturers, and spotty reliability at best.</p>
<p>I’ve been trying an AirPlay alternative, called Play-Fi, which is a competing industry technology for home Wi-Fi music streaming from DTS. Specifically, I tested the <a href="http://amzn.to/1TmSVV6">Definitive W7 wireless speaker</a> which integrates Play-Fi. Read on for my review ….</p>

<p>An <a href="http://go.benjaminmayo.co.uk/447188370">update to the Snapchat app</a> today expands on the popular Face Swap feature in a big way. You can now use the face swap effect with pictures taken or downloaded into your Camera Roll. Until now, two people had to be side-by-side in the same photo to Face Swap.</p>
<p>Now, anyone can face swap with any face detected in their iPhone photo library. This opens up some new ‘creative opportunities’, as pictured above, as the face does not have to be in the real world.</p>

<p>In an interview <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b077cl0q">with the BBC on national British radio</a>, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said that he believes Apple should pay 50% tax, along with all other companies. He said he doesn’t like the distinction of different rules between corporations and individuals.</p>
<p>Today, although Apple has never been found to evade tax or conduct illegal practices, it does not pay at top-rate tax, using a variety of financial engineering schemes to redirect profits elsewhere, such as Ireland, with significantly lower tax requirements.</p>

<p>From iPhone 4 and beyond, I’ve never skipped out on buying a flagship iPhone. The white AT&T iPhone 4 in May 2011 was my first model, then iPhone 4s in November a month after its launch. Starting with iPhone 5, I’ve bought every flagship iPhone on day one (even camping out in line overnight at least twice). I pre-ordered the off-cycle release iPhone SE last month and <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/31/iphone-se-from-iphone-6s-plus-impressions/" target="_blank">switched from the top-of-the-line iPhone 6s Plus</a>. I fully reserve the right to change my mind between now and September, but my experience with the iPhone SE so far and the current crop of iPhone 7 rumors has me thinking I just might hop off the upgrade train for the first time. Here’s why:</p>

<p>Apple has just released the latest public builds of its iOS 9.3.2 and OS X 10.11.5 updates out to beta testers. Both platforms saw <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/20/apple-releases-second-tvos-9-2-1-os-x-10-11-5-betas-to-developers/">developer</a> <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/20/ios-9-3-2-beta-2/">builds</a> released yesterday, with small bug fixes noted in the release notes. Most interesting to note is that Apple once again has allowed a combination of Low Power Mode and Night Shift to be <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/20/ios-9-3-2-beta-2-enable-low-power-mode-night-shift-simultaneously/">enabled simultaneously</a> on iOS devices.</p>

<p>Although Apple usually updates its iOS adoption statistics on a fortnightly basis, the company had strangely stopped updating its iOS chart last month. As <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/02/24/ios-9-adoption/">iOS 9 growth appeared to have stalled</a>, perhaps the numbers simply didn’t change significantly in that time. However, this week Apple has <a href="https://developer.apple.com/support/app-store/">updated the chart</a> with a significant jump, now reporting iOS 9 was seen on 84% of active devices as of April 18th. With iOS 10 set to be announced in June (and internal testing gradually ramping — see below), it appears iOS 9 will end up peaking around the 90% adoption mark in line with previous versions.</p>
