<p>Last week, the creators of Siri <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/04/siri-creators-new-virtual-assistant-viv/">teased their next virtual assistant service named Viv</a>. At the time, the creators said that Viv does more than Siri or any other virtual assistant currently available. As expected, Siri co-founder Dag Kittlaus today took the stage at <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2016/05/09/siri-creator-shows-off-first-public-demo-of-viv-the-intelligent-interface-for-everything/">TechCrunch Disrupt</a> in New York City to officially show off Viv to the public for the first time, touting that it will “the intelligent interface for everything.”</p>

<p>As someone keen on recording voiceovers and podcasts from an iPad, I needed a Lightning-enabled microphone that could handle such a task. While it’s true that <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/03/27/review-lightning-to-usb-3-camera-adapter-a-podcasters-best-friend/">Apple’s Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter</a> allows iOS to interface with a variety of microphones that it wasn’t able to before, I like the idea of keeping my setup as minimal and as dongle-free as possible.</p>
<p>Enter the <a href="http://amzn.to/1ZxbEzh">Shure MV5 Digital Condenser Microphone</a>. This is a MFi-certified Lightning-enabled microphone that works with the iPad or iPhone using a single microUSB to Lightning cable. By switching out the Lightning cable for a traditional USB cable, you can use the same microphone with your Mac or PC.</p>
<p>This microphone is a digital condenser that can be powered via Lightning or USB. It doesn’t require any special adapters or power supplies to work, just plug it in, launch an app, and start recording.</p>

http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/09/opinion-homekit-ios-10-app/
Mon, 09 May 2016 19:19:11 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/screen-shot-2016-04-28-at-9-34-33-am1.jpg?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=562" /></div>
<p>Since HomeKit was <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2014/06/02/apple-announces-homekit-api-for-ios-will-serve-as-a-central-hub-for-home-automation/">introduced with iOS 8</a>, one major missing piece from Apple’s home automation effort has been a built-in app that provides a user interface to the underlying framework. Interacting with Siri is the only Apple-supplied HomeKit UI; users rely on third-party apps instead for all visual HomeKit management.</p>
<p>The downside to this approach is that there isn’t officially one HomeKit app to rule them all, and companies that make great smart home sensors and accessories don’t necessarily make great software. Compare that to Apple’s HealthKit framework which connects various App Store apps to a single dashboard in the built-in Health app. The approach isn’t perfect, but a similar effort for HomeKit would be welcomed.</p>
<p>The good news is Apple’s been developing a <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/05/20/apples-planned-ios-9-home-app-uses-virtual-rooms-to-manage-homekit-accessories/">built-in HomeKit app</a> for a while now, and a rumor surfaced <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/07/apple-homekit-app-ios-10/">over the weekend</a> that such an app could finally be ready for iOS 10. As a close HomeKit follower, I’m very curious to see what iOS 10 may have in store for Apple’s home automation effort, but my first thought is that there are a few gems among the current crop of HomeKit apps that Apple may not compete with well even from its position as the platform owner…</p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">If you haven’t heard, iTunes and Apple Music are <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/04/apple-music-ios-10-revamp/" target="_blank">about to get a refresh from Apple</a> that will hopefully fix a lot of our ongoing issues with the apps while also introducing some fresh visuals. This isn’t that redesign, but a concept from <a href="https://thaadz.carbonmade.com/projects/5874990" target="_blank">graphic designer Thadeu Brandão</a> showing how Apple could revamp iTunes on the desktop while integrating Apple Music and simultaneously getting rid of much of the clutter in the current design.</span></p>

http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/09/apple-music-smart-playlists/
Mon, 09 May 2016 14:39:49 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/music.jpg?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=500" /></div>
<p>I addressed <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/06/apple-music-deletes-music/" target="_blank">one big issue</a> with Apple Music last week – and was very surprised to see from the poll results just how widespread the issue was. But while discussing that issue, we happened across a <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/4hwq51/i_think_it_would_be_dope_if_apple_music_had_a/" target="_blank">Reddit thread</a> that I thought contained a really great idea: give the iOS app Smart Playlist functionality via Siri.</p>
<p>I may complain a lot about the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/07/28/opinion-itunes-nuke-from-orbit/" target="_blank">bloated nature of iTunes</a>, a single app that tries to do way too many different things, but I do really like it as a pure music player. One of the features I love is Smart Playlists, which you can use to do all kinds of funky things.</p>
<p>For example, maybe you have some music you really love but haven’t listened to for a while? Create a Smart Playlist where Rating is 5 and Last Played is not in the last year. Been listening to the same stuff too much lately? Create a playlist where Last Played is not in the past month. Feeling nostalgic? A playlist where Year is a particular year …</p>

<p>A claimed design sketch of the <a href="http://9to5mac.com/tag/iphone-7/" target="_blank">iPhone 7</a> shows identical dimensions to the iPhone 6s. The drawing (shown in full below) shows only the height and width, not the depth, so doesn’t shed any more light on the ‘headphone jack or no headphone jack’ question.</p>
<p>The sketch was posted by French site <a href="http://www.nowhereelse.fr/iphone-7-dimensions-113852/" target="_blank"><em>NWE</em></a> with an @onleaks watermark, so has decent credentials, though of course neither can be sure that it’s genuine. It’s a very basic sketch that would be very easy to create.</p>
<p>The sketch does show one other small detail …</p>

<p>For the last few months I’ve been using my Apple EarPods for nearly every application that requires in-ear audio. I use my EarPods for monitoring while recording voiceovers, for podcasting, and for everyday music listening.</p>
<p>Absurd as it is, the last pair of headphones I’d owned, a pair of <a href="http://amzn.to/1NnbMk3">Sony MDR-7506’s</a>, ended up developing a short in the cable. I simply never got around to replacing them in a timely manner.</p>
<p>Audio-Technica’s ATH-M50, and the updated <a href="http://amzn.to/1s0O7wn">ATH-M50x</a>, have received rave reviews from tech sites, bloggers and YouTubers alike. The love that these headphones receive on a regular basis convinced me that the next pair of headphones that I tried needed to be these. Do they live up to the hype? <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/08/review-audio-technica-ath-m50x-headphones/#more-430214" class="more-link">more…</a></p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/reviews/'>Reviews</a> Tagged: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/audio-technica/'>audio-technica</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/audio-technica-ath-m50x/'>Audio-Technica ATH-M50x</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/earpods/'>EarPods</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/headphones/'>headphones</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/opinion/'>Opinion</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/review/'>review</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/sound/'>Sound</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/video/'>video</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430214/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=430214&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=430214&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />Sun, 08 May 2016 22:58:03 +00009to5MacHow-To: Automatically change your Mac’s display resolution when running specific apps [Video]
http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/08/how-to-automatically-change-mac-os-x-display-resolution-specific-apps-switcherresx-tutorial/
Sun, 08 May 2016 22:21:51 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2016/05/switcherresx-change-resolution-based-on-app-mac-os-x.jpg?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=563" /></div>
<p>I normally run my 15″ MacBook Pro at default resolution, which equates to a useable space of 1440-by-900. While this default resolution is great for reading and writing, I’ve found that it’s not always so good for editing with timeline-based apps, such as <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/final-cut-pro/id424389933?mt=12&uo=4&at=11l9Le">Final Cut Pro X</a>.</p>
<p>Generally speaking, <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/02/opinion-4k-monitor-good-investment-macbook-pro/">it’s better to have more resolution for timeline-based apps</a>, because the timelines can be so long and expansive. A larger field of view gives content creators more flexibility and room to work with on the canvas.</p>
<p>Wouldn’t it be nice if your Mac automatically adjusted to a higher resolution when running a certain app, and automatically switched back to default resolution when closing said app? <p>According to a new report from <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/08/business/media/podcasts-surge-apple.html?ref=technology&_r=0">The New York Times</a>, Apple recently held a closed-door meeting with seven of the top iTunes podcasters to discuss the company’s support for the community. The meeting took place last month at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters and offered a place for the podcasters to express complaints in “frank terms” to Apple employees.</p>

http://9to5mac.com/2016/05/07/apple-homekit-app-ios-10/
Sat, 07 May 2016 14:37:39 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/homekit.png?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=528" /></div><p class="p2">
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">A standalone iOS app for Apple’s HomeKit platform could finally arrive in iOS 10 as a new report claims an Apple employee on the company’s marketing team revealed plans for the launch in an online review. <a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2016/05/06/ios-10-homekit-app/" target="_blank">MacRumors</a> found the mention (pasted below) within a product review related to HomeKit and says it confirmed the person that left the comment was indeed an Apple employee. </span></p>
<blockquote>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">As I work in marketing for Apple, we test many Smart Home devices, especially for iOS HomeKit integration. […] </span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">Some advice, there are many third party applications, most free, that offer more control and customization(s) with many Smart Home devices. “Yonomi” is a free app that I often use, “Home” is another which cost $14.99. Both offer support for many devices with more added daily (including Amazon “Echo”). The next version of iOS due this fall will have a standalone “HomeKit” app as well.</span></p>
</blockquote>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">Apple has had plans for a HomeKit app on your iPhone’s home screen for quite a while as it’s developed the platform that currently only allows control of supported home automation accessories through Siri or third-party apps. We were first to <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2015/05/20/apples-planned-ios-9-home-app-uses-virtual-rooms-to-manage-homekit-accessories/" target="_blank">detail some of the planned features</a> for the platform and app back before the release of iOS 9, some which like the app have yet to be released. </span></p>
<p class="p2"><span class="s1">The idea is that rather than using various apps each accessory maker builds, you could just open one “Home” app on your iPhone to manage everything. These apps already exist in the form of third-party solutions <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/22/hesperus-homekit-iphone-app/" target="_blank">like the Hesperus app we reviewed</a> a couple weeks back, but a solution direct from Apple would hopefully mean one of the best implementations yet and maybe some new features that third-party developers don’t have access to in the current crop of apps.</span></p>
<p class="p2">If the report is true, we could finally get our first look at the Home app at <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/21/wwdc-rumor-roundup-macos-itunes-siri-for-mac-appletv/" target="_blank">Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in June</a> where the company is expected to preview iOS 10 alongside its other upcoming products and developer tools.</p><br />Filed under: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/category/apps/'>Apps</a> Tagged: <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/app/'>app</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/apple/'>Apple</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/home/'>Home</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/homekit/'>homekit</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/ios-10/'>iOS 10</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/iphone-7/'>iPhone 7</a>, <a href='http://9to5mac.com/tag/wwdc/'>WWDC</a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gocomments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/comments/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godelicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/delicious/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gofacebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/facebook/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gotwitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/twitter/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/gostumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/stumble/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/godigg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/digg/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/" /></a> <a rel="nofollow" href="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/goreddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://feeds.wordpress.com/1.0/reddit/9to5mac.wordpress.com/430239/" /></a> <img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=430239&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" /><img alt="" border="0" src="http://pixel.wp.com/b.gif?host=9to5mac.com&blog=22754319&post=430239&subd=9to5mac&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />Sat, 07 May 2016 14:37:39 +00009to5MacTweetbot 4.3 on iOS launches Topics, making tweet storms a breeze

<p>A purported casing leak <a href="http://9to5mac.com/community/possible-iphone-7-photo-smart-connector-dual-camera-antenna-lines/">back in March</a> claimed to show what was referenced as iPhone 7 ‘Pro’ and featured dual iSight cameras and three dots resembling the iPad Pro’s Smart Connector. A <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2016/04/27/iphone-7-pro-design-thickness/">separate leak</a> appeared to show schematics for the same iPhone 7 Pro design from a previously reliable magazine late last month. <a href="http://www.macotakara.jp/blog/rumor/entry-29862.html">Macotakara</a> reports now, however, that Apple’s Smart Connector technology likely won’t be featured on any of the next generation iPhones.</p>
