<p><em>EduTech is a 9to5Mac weekly series that focuses on technology’s application in education, lower and higher level, both for productivity and enjoyment. <p><em>This week’s EduTech is a <strong>guest post from Apple Distinguished Educator <a href="https://twitter.com/TheTechRabbi?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fthetechrabbi.com%2F">Michael Cohen</a></strong>, founder of <a href="http://thetechrabbi.com">The Tech Rabbi</a>. Apple’s Distinguished Educator <a href="https://www.apple.com/education/apple-distinguished-educator/">program</a> recognizes professionals who are using Apple to “transform teaching and learning.” </em></p>
<hr />
<p>When Apple announced the <a href="https://9to5mac.com/guides/swift/">Swift programming language</a> at WWDC in 2014, they aimed to change the way developers program forever. Promoted as a more resilient and flexible language, it was adopted, refined, and for the most part embraced. Less than 3 years later, Apple is set to revolutionize the way we program again. This time it’s not through veteran programmers, it’s through 9-16 year old students.</p>
<p>Through programming, coding, and as President Obama put it #CS4ALL, Apple has a chance to redefine and crown itself again as a unstoppable technological force in education.</p>

<p>We learned recently that macOS malware <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/06/macos-malware-mcafee-threat-report-april-2017/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">grew by 744%</a> last year, though most of it fell into the less-worrying category of adware. However, a newly-discovered piece of <a href="https://9to5mac.com/guides/malware/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">malware</a> (via <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/comments/681t1i/new_macos_malware_signed_with_legit_apple_id/">Reddit</a>) falls into the ‘seriously nasty’ category – able to spy on all your Internet usage, including use of secure websites.</p>
<p>Security researchers at <a href="http://blog.checkpoint.com/2017/04/27/osx-malware-catching-wants-read-https-traffic/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CheckPoint</a> found something they’ve labelled OSX/Dok, which manages to go undetected by Gatekeeper and stops users doing anything on their Mac until they accept a fake OS X update …</p>

https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/28/iphone-8-touch-id/
Fri, 28 Apr 2017 11:45:33 +0000<div class="feat-image"><img src="https://9to5mac.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/iphone-8-size.png?w=1600&h=1000#038;h=522" /></div>
<p>I’ve been giving more thought to the issue of how Apple might embed <a href="https://9to5mac.com/guides/touch-id/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Touch ID</a> into the display of the <a href="https://9to5mac.com/guides/iphone-8/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">iPhone 8</a>. So far, the various reports and rumors have focused on two possibilities: one hi-tech, one low-tech.</p>
<p>The hi-tech approach would be to embed a fingerprint reader beneath the display. We know from the sheer <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2017/03/28/iphone-8-fingerprint-sensor-ultrasonic-patent/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">volume</a> of <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2017/02/28/iphone-8-fingerprint-reader-embedded-in-display-patent-granted/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Apple</a> patents <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2016/05/18/home-button-in-iphone-display-screen/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">that</a> Apple <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2016/05/18/home-button-in-iphone-display-screen/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">has</a> plenty of <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2016/10/04/touch-id-in-display-iphone-8/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">ideas</a> about <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2016/05/18/home-button-in-iphone-display-screen/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">how</a> this might be achieved – but there’s a massive difference between a concept and a finished product. Indeed, there’s a huge gap between a fully-working prototype and something that works in volume production. If the rumors are to be believed, Apple has struggled to achieve this.</p>
<p>The low-tech approach would be to take the same route as many Android brands and simply move the Touch ID sensor to the rear of the casing. I’ve discussed previously why I think this would be a <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2017/03/29/opinion-iphone-8-touch-id-sensor-rear-of-iphone/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">terrible idea</a>, and the <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/28/bare-iphone-case-no-rear-touch-id-vertical-camera/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">most recent</a> reports <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/26/iphone-8-schematic/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">do suggest</a> Apple is <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/23/iphone-8-dummy-model-surfaces-with-edge-to-edge-display-no-rear-touch-id/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">not taking</a> this approach.</p>
<p>But it strikes me that there’s a third possibility here. What might be termed a ‘mid-tech’ approach …</p>

<p>Apple likes rolling out changes to <a href="https://www.icloud.com">iCloud.com</a> at seemingly random times throughout the year. Today, it’s updated the iCloud.com background from a static blue-yellow seaside gradient to a moving animation that tracks your mouse cursor and mimics the blue Dynamic Wallpaper on iPhone and iPad, which Apple quickly ignored after its introduction in iOS 7.</p>

<p>The latest iPhone 8 leak is an image of a purported case for the device, <a href="https://twitter.com/kksneakleaks/status/857857055138263041">via KKSneakLeaks</a>. This (admittedly) bare bones clear case gives some clues as to the device’s characteristics by the shape and cutouts in the accessory. Most prominently, the case includes a camera cutout that would snugly fit the vertically-stacked dual camera that we have seen so much in recent weeks.</p>
<p>It also has a noticeably longer power button and notably lacks any hole for a rear Touch ID sensor to reside. This again supports the idea that Apple will successfully integrate the fingerprint scanner into the display, rather than an earlier leak which <a href="https://9to5mac.com/2017/04/13/purported-iphone-8-schematics-show-bezel-less-front-rear-touch-id-same-thinness-as-iphone-7/">placed the sensor below</a> the Apple logo on the back. The general proportions of the part also confirms that the physical size of the device is comparable to the <a href="http://amzn.to/2psvMdx">4.7-inch iPhone 7</a>.</p>
