Fri, 08 Sep 2017 23:09:30 +0000

When the news broke that Ulysses was moving from a one-time payment strategy to a subscription-only strategy, the reaction was unsurprisingly polarized. Many people empathized with how hard it is for developers to make a living with the modern realities of software development, while others were less forgiving and vowed to vote with their wallets.

Being that it’s my number one favorite writing app on iOS and Mac, I’ve personally decided to stick with Ulysses, taking advantage of its discounted subscription rate for existing customers. That said, I understand that subscriptions are not for everyone, and there will be a point in most of our lives where piling on subscription after subscription proves to be unsustainable from a financial perspective.

In this week’s Friday 5, I discuss five more of my favorite universal writing apps for iOS. To qualify for this list, each app must feature a one-time purchase and no additional subscription fees. These apps also support Family Sharing, and as of this writing, feature no additional in-app purchases. Have a look at our video walkthrough inside for a brief hands-on look. more…
Fri, 08 Sep 2017 23:09:30 +00009to5MacApple donates $5M to Hand in Hand Hurricane Irma/Harvey relief, sets up iTunes donations

Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “We applaud Hand in Hand for bringing together people from all over the country to help one another at a time when so many desperately need it. In addition to Apple’s direct contribution to the relief and recovery efforts, we’re making it easy for anyone in the US to make their own donations to Hand in Hand through the App Store and iTunes.”

You can make a donation now to Hand in Hand via the website or to the Red Cross on iTunes or here.

We’ve analyzed data from the last two iPhone launches and there is a consistent trend of a phone’s value immediately dropping by about 15% following a new iPhone announcement and then by another 15% within a month or two of the release.

This weekend however, we’re giving you a special opportunity to lock in a solid price for your iPhone and keep that price through the end of September – almost certainly enough time to get your new iPhone. Use code monthlock at checkout to keep your locked in price until September 30th.
