Babies nurse eagerly for two reasons: First, because they’re hungry, and second, because they love to suck. If you feed them but don”t give them enough chance to suck, their craving for sucking will go unsatisfied and they will try to suck something else — their fists, or thumbs, or their clothes. Some babies feel this urge more than others. Bottle-fed babies sometimes end up overeating because they just keep on sucking, and the formula keeps on flowing. When they overfill their stomachs, they spit up (it can seem like an awful lot!) or pass large watery stools. Less often, breast fed babies have the same problem. Let your baby take in what seems like a reasonable amount, then offer a pacifier to satisfy the need for more sucking.
